What To Do In New York In One Day

An Entertaining Afternoon In Chinatown

10 Days in NYC | A Photographer’s Guide to New York City

Getting lost in Chinatown is one of the things I like most about New York. The endless market stalls and bazaars will make you feel as if you were far away from the city, but without a doubt, it is quite an experience. If you feel like eating or buying something to eat, these are the best places to eat in Chinatown, although I recommend that you save room in your stomach for the night.

In general, in Chinatown you can find all kinds of objects and accessories at very cheap prices. You can not miss the famous imitations of Canal Street, noise and bustle combined with the art of bargaining.

Final Thoughts On 7 Days In New York Itinerary

New York City is a fantastic place to visit any time of the year. You can stay for 1 day in New York City or 2 weeks but I personally think 1 week in NYC is the perfect amount of time to explore both Manhattan and Brooklyn and Queens. Food is amazing in New York City and I have not had better food somewhere else since there are just so much diversity of restaurants and bars that you cant find in another city.

There Are Two Main Ways To Get Top Of The Rock Tickets

Option 1:

Buy them online and reserve a specific date and time. This is the way to go if you know exactly when you will be going up there. The main risk with this option is that the weather may not cooperate and Rockefeller Center does not issue refunds due to weather conditions, though they may issue you a ticket for another date in case of inclement weather. Buying a VIP Access ticket gives you more flexibility and saves you time, since you skip the line.

Option 2:

Buy your tickets at 30 Rockefeller Center in person. This is the better option if you are not sure about the date or want to check the weather forecast once you arrive in NYC. The ticket office is in the Dining Concourse of 30 Rockefeller Center . There are vending machines as well as several ticket agents inside. The line usually moves pretty quickly. The biggest risk with this option, especially during the peak tourism months in New York , is that they may be sold out for certain time periods on a given day. For example, if you were to show up on a warm and sunny Friday in June hoping to go up with the first elevator at, you may discover that they are sold out. So its a trade-off between weather risk and ticket availability risk.

And dont worry about buying tickets far ahead of your trip, since you can get a refund if you request it at least 7 days prior to the date you have chosen.

Next: Walk 2 minutes

Take the escalator from the Dining Concourse up to the main lobby of 30 Rock

Start the morning, take a coffee to go and attend one of the most vibrant sensory spectacles. In this mythical square, the nerve center and place of passage of thousands of people, you can enjoy from one of the steps of its famous red staircase, the real New York atmosphere.

Here Are A Couple Of Tips Before Visiting The 9/11 Museum

  • Give yourself at least 2 hours
  • The 9/11 Museum is not something to be rushed through, nor should it be a quick Check! on your NYC to-do list. While the Memorial can be seen and experienced in as little as ten or fifteen minutes, you really need at least a couple of hours to do the Museum justice. If you dont have the time, save it for another trip.

  • Expect a very emotional experience

This may sound very obvious to anyone old enough to remember what happened that day, but with many visitors coming to NYC with children and young adults, it is an important reminder nonetheless. After all, the Museum is designed to tell the story of 9/11, the worst terrorist attack in American history, particularly to those who werent even born yet. In addition to graphic and gut-wrenching audio and video recordings, it also holds the unidentified remains of many of the nearly 3,000 victims who perished on that terrible day.

  • Expect crowds

The Museum entrance lines outside become quite long, especially on weekends between March and December. So plan ahead .

  • To avoid ending on such a heavy note, we also want to mention one of the most striking additions to the redesigned World Trade Center:

Memorial & One World Trade Center

After you finish checking out Wall Street, head north west to 911 Memorial, the most sobering place in Manhattan. The Memorial was built on where the Twin Towers used to be before they collapsed during the 911 Terrorist Attack. Every Sep 11 two tribute lights go up symbolizing the fallen towers.

Now there is a new building called One World Trade Center, the tallest building in North America. There is an observation deck in One World that you can check out and has an amazing view of Manhattan and New Jersey across the Hudson River.

    Brooklyn Bridge And Brooklyn Heights

If you have one day in New York going to Brooklyn may be a bit ambitious but I promise you its worth it.

Many will suggest you go straight to DUMBO but there are places I prefer, so Id rather include those.

Completed in 1883, back when it was the first ever suspension bridge, Brooklyn Bridge connects Manhattan to Brooklyn across the East River and is one of the most iconic places to visit in New York. The views of the bridge as well as from the bridge of Manhattans skyline are stunning.

After walking the Brooklyn Bridge, take it right and you will be going through Brooklyn Bridge Park to reach Brooklyn Heights, the first suburb of New York City. This is a pleasant area to walk around, with beautiful Victorian style buildings and churches.

Head to Brooklyn Heights Promenade for some of the best views in New York, which include Lower Manhattan, Midtown Manhattan, New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty.

Internet Access In New York City

I Traveled 20 Miles to the Top of New York City for THIS.

As a major metropolitan city, New York is obviously well connected, and its easy to find free WiFi as you wander the city. Coffee shops, hotels, restaurants and attractions are all good places where WiFi should be fast and free to access.

If you want to get online with your phone using data, you have a few options, which I outline in my guide to getting online when travelling. The USA is not overall a cheap destination for data in my experience, but it is possible to pick up a SIM card for an unlocked phone if you wish.

One thing to be aware of, depending on your carrier and device, is that all the huge skyscrapers in New York do impact the passage of mobile signals, creating a sort of canyon effect. Combine this with the sheer number of people in the city, and you can expect network access to be a little sporadic and slow at times.

Make Your Way To An Epic New York Museum Of Your Choice

Yesterday you visited one of New Yorks most iconic museumsbut since New York is home to an endless number of museums, we recommend finishing up your second day in the city with another one!

For most first-time New York visitors, this will probably be either the Met, MOMA, or the American Natural History Museum, depending on what you did on your first daybut if youd rather get a bit more off the beaten track for this visit , the More Time in NYC? section below has some great ideas for you!

Where To Eat During Your Day In Nyc

New York City is filled with well-known dining establishments, but if youre short on time, youll likely want to leave them off of your itinerary. However, itll still be hard to find a sit-down restaurant that wont have you waiting for a table. To save time, consider making a reservation at a restaurant youre interested in eating at.

  • Hop Kee
  • As mentioned earlier, you can grab a table at this popular Chinese restaurant if you visit later at night . The authentic Cantonese cuisine is in the restaurant downstairs, so if youre not walking down a flight of stairs, youre not eating at the right place! Address: 21 Mott Street

    • Left Bank

If you happen to be in town on a Sunday, stop by Left Bank for a $20 prix fixe dinner! For a sit-down restaurant, the prices are very reasonable for New York City. Address: 117 Perry Street

    • Johns of BleekerStreet

This brick-oven pizzeria is popular, so try to arrive for lunch instead of dinner. They dont serve individual slices only pies so be sure to bring enough people to share your order with you ! Address: 278 Bleeker Street

    • Any Deli

Its hard to go wrong with a New York City deli sandwich! To save money on your meals, skip the restaurants entirely and go for small establishments on street corners. This will also save you time, too, which is always valuable when you only hav 24 hours to spend in NYC.

No one should spend a day in New York City without enjoying a great piece of pizza, so our next journey will bring us to the oldest pizzeria in AmericaLombardi’s Coal Oven Pizza. Like bagels, there are many great places in NYC for pizza, but Lombardi’s is an excellent choice for a first time visitor. Getting There: From Houston, you’ll walk two blocks south on Broadway, passing Prince Street, and take a left onto Spring Street. Walk four blocks, passing Crosby first, and you will find the red awning of Lombardi’s alternatively, if you want to make the journey more quickly, you can catch the subway from 86th & Lexington and catch the 6 train to Spring Street.

What to Do in One Day in Chelsea NYC

Visit time: 11 am 12 pm

End the morning of your one day in New York City itinerary by making your way to the Top of the Rock, which is right next door to Rockefeller Center.

Its one of the best observatories in New York City and from the top, you can truly get one of the most rewarding views of the entire city, including Central Park and the Empire State Building.

The building itself has 70 floors and three different observation decks. It opened back in the 1930s but wasnt known as the Top of the Rock until 2005. Remember to download the Top of the Rock app during your visit here, which gives you an in-depth look into your surroundings.

In normal times Top of the Rock opens at 8 am, however, currently it can only be visited from 10 am. Since this is one of the most popular attractions in NYC, make sure to purchase your tickets well in advance!

If you would like to be there for opening time, you can flip around this itinerary a little bit and visit the attractions in Midtown Manhattan after seeing the Top of the Rock.

    Alternative: Empire State Building

Now, since you have only one day in NYC, unfortunately, you wont have the time to check out the view from the Top of the Rock and the Empire State Building as well .

Personally, I think the Top of the Rock offers a way better view than the Empire State Building so thats why I recommend including this one in your one day in NYC itinerary.

Day 3 In New York – The Best Birthday Ever! Empire State, Helicopter Tour & Basketball Game!

Okay, because you have a lot to see and not a lot of time for this one day in New York City itinerary, some tough choices need to be made.

So, depending on how much you NEED to see the Statue of Liberty and the World Trade Center, you could always skip this part of my one day in NYC post and go right to the afternoon section.

Because it really all just depends on what you NEED to see and where your interests lie. But, if you do want to see Lower Manhattan, then Id prioritize the Statue of Liberty and the World Trade Center Museum and Memorial/Occulus since theyre both kind of right there.

Statue of Liberty To get the best free views of the statue of liberty, Id hop on the Staten Island Ferry. Not only is it totally free, but this ferry runs twenty-four hours a day and has departures from Battery Park every 15 to 30 minutes. The ride itself also only takes about 25 minutes , making this a great addition to any one day in New York City itinerary.

The World Trade Center Museum and Memorial If youre really short on time but still want to see the World Trade Center, then you could always skip the museum and just see the Memorial itself. Its a really somber but beautiful tribute to all those who lost their lives during the 9/11 attacks. Its also free to visit and well worth your time if you only have one day in New York City.
