Cash Aid In New York As Well As Job Programs
Temporary Assistance in New York can help people pay for their basic needs and bills. There are two main components of this public resource, including Safety Net Assistance as well as Family Assistance. If you cant find a job, are unable to work due to a medical condition or emergency, or your job does not pay enough, public funds from TA may be able to help you pay for your bills and basic needs.
Families with a minor child may benefit from Family Assistance. Cash and grants can be disbursed from this component. It is a part of the federal government funded Temporary Assistance for Needy Families guidelines.

Because funeral assistance is a component of the Temporary Assistance program, an in-person interview will be required. Please come prepared to discuss the decedents financial situation, including income and assets. Common income and assets include, but are not limited to, any earned or unearned income due to the decedents estate, life insurance proceeds, social security or veterans death benefits, and bank accounts.
For applicants determined to be eligible for Temporary Assistance, Monroe County will provide a funeral assistance buial grant up to a maximum of $2,500 for decedents aged six years or older, or up to $1250 for deceased children aged five years or younger.
Please note that to be considered a funeral eligible for assistance, the total funeral cost cannot amount to more than $7,000. If the funeral you are arranging will cost more than $7,000, Monroe County will be unable to consider this an indigent burial and we will be unable to provide any assistance.
Public Assistance And Work Requirements
Do I have to participate in Public Assistance work activities or a Work Experience Program ?
When you apply for or receive Public Assistance, unless the Department of Social Services says that you are exempt , you must participate in work activities as assigned. Work activities will sometimes include educational activities.
Who is exempt from participating in Public Assistance work activities? The following is a list of ways that people can be exempt from Public Assistance work activities:
- If you are under age 16
- If you are under age 19 and attending high school, vocational school or technical school full time
- If you are 60 years of age or older
- If you are ill or injured and unable to participate in work activities for up to 3 months
- If you are determined to be disabled or incapacitated by DSS
- If you are needed in the home to care for another family member who has a physical or mental impairment. You must be the only one able to care for that person
- If you are in the last 30 days of pregnancy, with medical proof of the due date
- If you are the parent or caretaker relative of a child under 3 months old and you are actually caring for the child. This exemption can be extended by DSS up to 12 months. However, there is a 12-month lifetime maximum.

When you are applying for help for yourself or for someone else, you will be asked to provide proof of certain things. Your worker will tell you which of these things you must provide. If you bring proof with you when you first come in to apply for TANF, you may be able to get help sooner.
If you drop documentation off at your local department of social services, you should ask for a receipt to prove what documentation you left. The receipt should have your name, the specific documentation that you dropped off, the time, date, county name and the name of the social services worker who provided the receipt.

To start the application process for New York TANF benefits, including help with an emergency, you need to file an application with your county Department of Social Services or, if you live in one of the five boroughs of New York City, with your local Job Center. Food Assistance Programs Including Food Stamps/snap And Assistance For Children
The main government resource is known as Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, or food stamps. It provides nutrition and food assistance to over 1 million families in New York City, including children, the disabled, and seniors. The main goal of the assistance program is to help lower income and unemployed families pay for nutritious groceries and foods.
Beneficiaries will be issued a debit card that is used to buy food. New York City strongly encourages families to use their food stamp benefits and vouchers to eat healthy, and to buy vegetables, fruits and other nutritious items. SNAP Food Stamps and the debit card can be used at many locations across NYC, including supermarkets, grocery stores, some Green Carts, and most local farmers markets in the city.
This can help the low and maybe even more moderate income families. For example, many residents don’t even know that they are eligible for public assistance from the food stamp program. The only way to know for sure is to apply, and the city and most social workers encourage this. Many people who receive food assistance have money saved, may own their own home or car, and even immigrants can be qualified. Emergency cash benefits and vouchers may be issued as well.
Children and students from low income families can receive additional help from the School Lunch Program. It offers free and reduced priced meals to children in public schools throughout the boroughs and New York City.
