7:30 pm Our train began its descent under the Hudson River which takes about 3-4 minutes in the one-way tunnel The ascent begins, your ears pop and you emerge under the bright lights of bustling Penn Station. Time to assemble my luggage. A train person had walked past my room just before arriving in New York asking if anyone would need luggage assistance. Unfortunately, I didnt hear her.
As the train slowly came to a halt, the transom opened, the stairs unfolded and an extended arm from the attendant helped all of us alight from the train. I was the last to leave and to my dismay, the Red Cap had already left with his luggage cart filled to the max. I was alone on the platform, hoping for another Red Cap to come by. Not one in sight.
Just as I was about to haul my gear myself, the conductor steps off the train and asks why I didnt already have the Red Cap to assist me. I said I didnt hear the announcement and I was waiting to see if anyone would return with a luggage cart.
He said no, they had left, but he would help me. I tried to convince him otherwiseit wasnt in his job description for sure. But he wouldnt take no for an answer. He wheeled my two heaviest bags across the platform, up the escalator, and across the expansive station. Not only did he take my bags to the curb, he also flagged down a taxi!

Amtrak Silver Star In Winter Park Florida
6:30 pm I arrived at the small but busy Amtrak station in the heart of downtown Winter Park, Florida. Ive tried the Orlando and Kissimmee train stations and prefer the one in Winter Park. My overnight train was scheduled to arrive on time at 7:41pm.
After checking in with the station agent, he graciously stowed my bags in his office so that I could walk across the street for a coffee. I dont think the gate agent for Delta could do that.

7:20 pm-ish A five minute walk from the coffee shop on Park Avenue and I was back at the station. I could have relinquished my larger suitcase to the baggage car, but Ive done this run before and know how to safely secure my suitcase in my tiny roomette so it doesnt take up too much space.
7:30 pm The Amtrak station agent announces the arrival of our train. All the passengers in the building scatter to their designated waiting points along the platform, carefully observing not to get to close to the yellow line.
Coach passengers going to various destinations had different places to stand for their train car. Sleeping car passengers, like me, had our own area to congregate, although there were only four of us compared to at least twenty-five coach passengers.

When I Boarded The Amtrak Train At Moynihan Train Hall In New York City’s Penn Station I Settled Into A Roomette A Tiny Private Suite That Sleeps Two People
A step up from sitting in coach, where you get a regular train seat, a Roomette is a private space with a door and blinds to cover up the windows.
Inside, there are two seats across from each other, a table that folds out in-between, and a bed above the seats that pulls down. The seats also pull out into a bed.
And in some Roomettes , there’s a side table that swings open to reveal a toilet. Above, there’s a folding sink and mirror.

When I was little, I used to take The City of Miami train which ran from Chicago to, you guessed it, Miami. But now its gone, Instead, you have to take a train from Chicago to New York. Then transfer at New York Penn Station, to board one of two Amtrak Silver Service trains that runs between the Big Apple and Miami. Their names are Silver Star and Silver Meteor.

Auto Train Cost Tickets And Reservations
I have to admit I had a bit of trouble nailing down the price of my ticket. I first identified what I thought was a pretty good price of $89 for coach. A coach seat is one which reclines a bit but not totally flat. You can doze on it but it will be like sleeping on a plane, not very restful. I thought the price seemed reasonable but when I plugged in the date on the Amtrak site, the price shot up. After trying several different dates, I did find a $89.00 coach fare but that was waaaaay in the future. The lesson here is, a good way to save money is to book as far in the future as possible. The $89.00 does not include the price of transporting the car which is an additional $200.00.
The prices for other accommodations also depends on how far in advance you book. The closer the date, the more expensive the fare, similar to what some airlines do.

From a cost perspective, it is not necessarily cheaper to take the train, although it could be. There are many factors to consider. Will you go coach or sleeper accommodation? If you drive, will you linger and take a leisurely, several-day road trip from the northeast to Florida or try to make it in one non-stop drive?
But I Didn’t Anticipate How Poorly The Constant Motion And Length Of The Trip Would Make Me Feel
As someone who deals with travel anxiety, I found the length of the trip to be overwhelming. It’s tough for me to relax when I am in-between destinations, and, for some reason, I struggled to view the train as a destination in itself.
The constant motion of the train didn’t help, either. In fact, I ended up feeling a little queasy.

Auto Train Menu Dining Car And Lounge
When you check in you are given a choice of different times to have dinner in the dining car. We chose 7PM. I wanted to check out the lounge so I went there and had a pre-dinner cocktail. The price was a reasonable $8.00. The lounge was inviting with good music Motown -piped in.
At dinner the menu was certainly adequate with options of steak, fish, chicken, and pasta. All meals come with wine, non-alcoholic beverages and dessert. There is also a childrens menu. All meals are included in the price of a ticket if you choose a sleeper accommodation. If you chose coach, the meal must be paid for separately and you eat in your seat although we were told that in future, holders of coach tickets could eat in the dining car.
Breakfast was a grab and go affair of coffee, cereal, milk and juice with a little pound cake eaten in the lounge or at your seat. Again perfunctory and fit for purpose.
First Off I Wore The Comfiest Clothes I Own
Does it look like I’m wearing pajamas? That’s because I pretty much am. These are the most pajama-like trousers I own that I’d wear in public, although my own mother would argue that they should only be for sleeping.
But who cares? Once you get on the train, you’ll be happy you’re comfortable, no matter what you look like.

Segments: Sadly, since 2008 Amtrak’s USA railpass no longer gives unlimited travel, it only covers a maximum of 10 ‘segments’. This is the maximum number of individual train rides you can take during your 30 day pass duration.
A segment is one train ride on one train: So a 2-day 2,200-mile trip from Chicago to Los Angeles on the Southwest Chiefcounts as one segment, and a 30-minute ride on a Northeast Regional train is also one segment. Go figure! A journey involving a change of train counts as two segments.
