What About Travelling By Boat
The BEIS has also put a figure on ferry transport – 18g of CO2 per passenger kilometre for a foot passenger, which is less than a coach, or 128g for a driver and car, which is more like a long-haul flight.
But ferries’ ages and efficiency will vary around the world – and a ferry won’t get you to America, although a cruise ship or ocean liner would.
The cruise industry has long been under pressure to reduce environmental impacts ranging from waste disposal to air pollution, as well as high emissions – not only from travel but also from powering all the on-board facilities.
And, while the figures are not directly comparable, they suggest cruising falls in similar territory to flying in terms of emissions.
Concordes Record Transatlantic Crossing
The record for the fastest transatlantic crossing is, of course, awarded to the Concorde. Back in 1996, the aircraft made the fastest ever crossing from London to New York with British Airways. Just how fast? On February 7th, 1996, BA flew the Concorde from New York to London in an impressive two hours, 52 minutes and 59 seconds. The aircraft reached a top speed on its flight of 1,350mph.
On that day, some 24 years ago, the Concorde tested the boundaries of what was then modern flight. Subsonic, or regular, aircraft had never come close to such a speedy flight. This year, British Airways was able to set the record for the fastest non-supersonic Atlantic crossing thanks to Storm Ciara. With strong tailwinds, a BA Boeing 747 left New York and landed in London after just four hours and 56 minutes.
Before that, the record for the fastest subsonic Atlantic crossing was held by Norwegian. It set its record in January 2018 with a Boeing 787 Dreamliner on flight DY7014 at a crossing time of five hours and 13 minutes.

The Latest Push For Supersonic Commercial Flight
Now, Boom wants to pick up the mantle of supersonic passenger flights. Drawing on the successes and mistakes made by Tu-144 and the Concorde, the company wants to create a commercial airliner that can go fast affordably. To do this, theyâre creating a prototype jet that will test important concepts before adding them to the final design of a supersonic passenger plane.
âWhere Concorde proved that airliners could carry passengers at supersonic speed, XB-1 will demonstrate the key technologies that enable affordable and accessible supersonic travel for the next generation,â the company wrote on its blog.
Boom also wants to address environmental concerns by using sustainable airline fuel made from animal fats to reduce the amount of CO2 pumped into the air. If the XB-1 is successful, the production of the companyâs final commercial airliner, called the Overture, will be done using a manufacturing center that can at least partially rely on clean energy.
Airline noise pollution is also a worry, especially with supersonic planes, so the company plans to design Overture with noise-reducing technology and routes that will ensure it hits sonic boom speed over the ocean instead of over people.

British Airways From Lhr To Jfk: The Classic Route
BA operated Concorde on flights BA 001 and BA 002 to and from New Yorks JFK, departing in the morning. The flights were timed to leave LHR at 10:30 am, arriving at 9:30am in New York, just in time for a meeting on Wall Street or in Midtown. BA 003/004, the Phil Collins flight, left in the evening.
But JFK wasnt the first destination for BAs Concordes. That honor rests with Washingtons Dulles airport, which granted permission for the Concorde to land there. JFK delayed the arrival of Concorde service due to concerns about noise. BA also operated during the winter to Barbados , and there is a Concorde parked at Grantley Adams Airport.
BA also operated scheduled services to Washington and Bahrain three times per week, Miami with a stopover in Washington, and to Toronto during the summer. Bahrain might not seem like a natural destination, but it was selected as a jumping-off point for BA flights further afield a mini-hub and eventually became a refueling point for BA and Singapore Airlines Concorde services, one of the first examples of code-sharing. More on that below.

The Concorde is the stuff of aviation legend, yes but also of rock and roll and show business legend. The story of how Phil Collins played a mega-concert on two continents on the same day is a classic example of how stars used the supersonic jet.
In 1985, a star-studded lineup of musicians played Live Aid in London and Philadelphia. The likes of U2, Freddie Mercury, Phil Collins and more played Wembley stadium Madonna, Bob Dylan and Tom Petty headlined in Philadelphia, an ocean away. Collins wanted to play at both concerts, and the Concorde was the tool of choice. Collins played Wembley at 4pm, then left via helicopter to London Heathrow to meet the evening Concorde flight to New York. He landed at JFK, again boarded a helicopter, and played at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia.
The three-hour flight minus the five-hour time zone difference between the UK and the East Coast meant Collins landed in New York two hours before leaving London. Only the Concorde part regularly scheduled airliner and part exclusive shuttle to stars, business leaders and politicians could have made this possible.

A Plane That Could Get You From New York To Paris In 35 Hours Could Soon Be A Reality
Our options for getting around havenât changed all that much since the first commercial flights took off a little over a century ago. But while we still havenât gotten the flying cars or teleportation devices we were promised, we have continued to improve on the types of transportation we do have, particularly airplanes. Now, a new company working on creating a commercial supersonic flight believes it can succeed where others have failed â and itâs building an actual plane to prove it.
The company, called Boom, is manufacturing a single-seat aircraft dubbed the XB-1 that is scheduled to roll out on October 7. The plane will then be used for testing supersonic flight technology next year. If the XB-1 is successful in proving that Boom can create airplanes that are fast, safe, and sustainable, the data will be used to build a commercial passenger airliner called the Overture.
