New York City Unveils Hybrid School Reopening Plan

Summer Camps Long Island

By Peter Szekely

4 Min Read

NEW YORK – New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on Wednesday unveiled a plan for reopening the countrys largest school system in September with a blended learning schedule that would have students alternating between classrooms and their homes.

Under the plan, which requires state approval, 1.1 million public school students would spend two days at school and three learning at home, and then reversing the sequence in the following week. The scheme is designed to limit the number of students and teachers in school buildings to prevent spreading the coronavirus.

This blended model, this kind of split schedule model, is what we can do under current conditions, the Democratic mayor said. And then lets hope and pray science helps us out with a vaccine, with a cure or treatment.

De Blasio outlined the plan after President Donald Trump earlier this week criticized recommendations by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on reopening schools as too expensive and impractical.

The Republican president, who is seeking re-election in November, accused Democrats of wanting to keep schools shut for political reasons and threatened to cut off federal funding to schools that do not reopen, despite a surge in coronavirus cases.

Trump underscored his position on Monday in Twitter message written in all capital letters: SCHOOLS MUST OPEN IN THE FALL!!

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said a decision on the reopening plan would be made in August.

Summer Learning Loss: What Is It And What Can We Do About It

As students return to school this fall, many of them perhaps especially those from historically disadvantaged student groups will be starting the academic year with achievement levels lower than where they were at the beginning of summer break. This phenomenon sometimes referred to as summer learning loss, summer setback, or summer slide has been of interest to education researchers going back as far as 1906.1 We review what is known about summer loss and offer suggestions for districts and states looking to combat the problem.

An early comprehensive review of the literature summarized several findings regarding summer loss.2 The authors concluded that: on average, students achievement scores declined over summer vacation by one months worth of school-year learning, declines were sharper for math than for reading, and the extent of loss was larger at higher grade levels. Importantly, they also concluded that income-based reading gaps grew over the summer, given that middle class students tended to show improvement in reading skills while lower-income students tended to experience loss. However, they did not find differential summer learning in math, or by gender or race in either subject.

Tip : Create A Study Schedule

Taking summer classes can be hard. There are probably a lot of things you’d rather be doing like seeing your friends, being outside, playing sports, etc., and it can be easy to get distracted.

Either before or right after you start summer school, create a study schedule that lets you plan when you will put aside time to study and do homework. If you can set aside the same time every day, like 4:00-5:30pm every afternoon, that can make it easier to stick to your study schedule and plan other activities. Set goals for what you want to accomplish each day or week, whether it’s a project you need to complete, papers to read, or just general studying and homework.

On the other hand, make sure you are giving yourself enough time to take a break and relax. Summer school can be demanding, and if you overtax yourself, you may end up burned out by the time the school year starts, which you don’t want to do because it could cause your other grades to suffer. If you need help creating your study schedule, ask a parent or teacher for some guidance.
