Or Just Live With Stink Bugs

Or, if you can bear the thought of living communally with stink bugs inside your home, you could just leave them alone.

Their mouthparts tiny shields about a half-inch long and wide, which they curiously tuck between their legs when they’re not piercing and sucking the juice from plants are not good for biting people. Stink bugs can’t sting you.

They don’t nest or lay eggs or reproduce indoors. They don’t feed on anything or anyone in your house. They just move in to take a load off for a few months scientifically, they enter a dormant phase known as diapause.

You’re unlikely to even know they’re there unless you do something to disturb them.

But if you just leave them alone, they’ll crawl right back outside in the spring.

Street Gang: How We Got To Sesame Street

Family Travel

As with many Americans, my early childhood was scored to the tune of the Childrens Television Workshops groundbreaking show Sesame Street, which premiered towards the end of 1969, the year of my birth. Little did I fathom, growing up in the sleepy San Francisco burb of Palo Alto , that the series I enjoyed was both revolutionary and designed to reach a far different demographic than mine. As I matured and we moved east, I mostly forgot about the once-beloved characters and songs that had helped form me. Now, however, thanks to the new documentary Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street, from director Marilyn Agrelo , I have learned all sorts of important facts about the program, and realize how lucky I and other kids of my and subsequent generations were and have been, thanks to the tireless efforts of committed educators and entertainers. If it was easy enough for us to get to Sesame Street by turning on the TV, it was by no means easy for Sesame Street to get to us.

A Brief History Of Sesame Street

Sesame Street may be populated bymonsters, but no single evil developer character can be blamed for thegentrification of the Street. Rather,it can be understood as a series of rational decisions based on audienceresponse and funding, paired with a loss of the vision and institutional memorythat came as the original generation of SesameStreets creators gradually passed away or retired.

The initial germ of Sesame Street began to take root and sprout at a dinner party heldat the Gramercy Park apartment of National Educational Television producer JoanGanz Cooney and her husband Tim. Among the guests was psychologist and CarnegieCorporation exec Lloyd Morrisett, who had recently marveled at how his daughter watched testpatterns as she waited for Saturday-morning childrens programs to air andmemorized a whole host of jingles and slogans from ads.

Morrisett, whose work centered on childrenand education, asked Cooney whether she thought that television could be usedto educate Americas youth. Cooney replied that she didnt know but thought itwarranted further investigation. She led a feasibility study, which led to aseries of pilots effectively iterative prototyping followed by outcometesting, which in turn shaped the shows format and style.

Sesame Street: The Next Generation

It is a commonplace that a personcannot serve two masters, but for its first 30 years or so, Sesame Street really seemed to doexactly that. The show had always been steered by both a strenuous commitmentto evidence-based testing and a crew with a shared vision for what the showshould be. But over the course of the 1990s, Sesame Street began to lose its institutional memory. The keepersof that oh-so-important vision started to disappear, replaced with a newgeneration. This new generation had grown up on the program in many cases, andmany of them were quite talented. But the show began to lose the hands that hadsteered it, right as the show came up against the first program that seemed tobe enough of a monolith to actually challenge Sesame Streets dominance.

The newmillennium has not been especially kind to television, generally. Consumershave expanding media options with the ubiquity of smartphones and tablets. Withthis proliferation of options, broadcasters have had to redefine success.Whereas a prime-time show would need at least a 30% market share during thenetwork era to be considered successful, the threshold has dropped below 10%, accordingto the textbook Media and Culture. Ananalysis by TRAC Media Services showed that viewership had declined from 2010to early 2014 for all childrens networks except Sprout, which was essentiallystable in last place.

    Stink Bug Control Tips

On the home front, your best defense against stink bugs is to arm yourself with weather stripping, caulking and tape, and make your home a fortress. Seal up gaps and crevices around where doors, windows, chimneys and utility pipes are cut into the exterior. Any opening large enough for a stink bug to crawl through should be sealed.

The best thing to do if you find them inside is gently sweep them into a bucket, then fill it with a couple of inches of soapy water. You could vacuum them up, but perhaps do that as a last resort because it will trigger stink bugs’ notorious odor and make your vacuum cleaner smell nasty.

Some companies recommend a special stink bug vacuum a cheap, handheld model used only for that chore. The bag should be tossed in a thick, disposable trash bag and taken far from the house.

Poison can quickly kill the stink bugs, but that will also trigger their stench. Professional extermination is another option.

After 50 Years On Tv Has Sesame Street Been Gentrified

ByTad Suiter, Adjunct Assistant Professor |August 27, 2019

A cast photo from the first season of “Sesame Street.” Oscar the Grouch, seen under Bob’s arm, was originally orange before being remade as a green puppet for the second season. Bert, Ernie and Big Bird were already major characters. Grover and Cookie Monster were far less developed and less differentiated from other blue monster Muppets.

Im a stay-at-home dad. Its the best job Ive ever had, if possibly the hardest. I love spending time with my daughter, and I love watching her grow up and learn.

Before my daughter was born, I earned a doctorate in history, for which I focused on the history of communications. Since my daughters birth, I have continued to teach part-time as an adjunct professor of communications at various schools.

As one might expect of someone who has actually taught Intro to Television at a college level, I dont get too snobby about screen time. I try to limit the number of hours my daughter watches TV, and I understand why the television is not a great babysitter. But I do plop my daughter in front of the TV sometimes. Ill be honest it is necessary for my sanity. And part of the reason I feel able to do so without much guilt is Sesame Street.

So when my daughter reached the age where Sesame Street was capturing her interest, I had no problem setting her down in front of the TV to watch the Street. That said, I had an issue: I really, really hate Elmo.

Of course, she does love Elmo.

Does anyone know the distance between 30th Street Amtrak Station in Philadelphia and Sesame Place in Langhorne, PA, We will be going to Sesame Place by Amtrak from NYC and I believe the Trenton, NJ Amtrak station might be closer.

If you go to Trenton, think about taking New Jersey Transit. It’s a lot cheaper.

Google Maps shows the distance between 30th Street & Sesame Place as 27.6 miles, vs. only 7.8 miles from Trenton Station to Sesame Place.

From Trenton Station, you can take SEPTA Bus 127 to reach Sesame Place…however, this bus only runs every 90 minutes on Saturday. It leaves Trenton Station at 7:30a, then at 8:35, 10:05, 11:35, 1:05p, 2:35, 4:05, 5:30. Returning from Sesame Place, it leaves at 10:35, 12:05, 1:35, 3:05, 4:35, & 5:50p.

The ride is about 45-50 min each way.

    Edited: 6 years ago

Trenton is only about 25 miles closer to Sesame Place than 30th Street, Phila. You could get a taxi from Trenton and be there in 15 minutes.

It’s like asking: Which is closer to Citi Field, Flushing or Newark?
