Brooklyn Squandered Two Golden Opportunities In Boston And Now Time Is Running Out
This time, the Brooklyn Nets didn’t need to erase a deficit in the fourth quarter. They didn’t need Kyrie Irving to hit a series of preposterous, contested shots against the best defense in the NBA. Coming out of a timeout with 9:47 left in Game 2 of their first-round series against the Boston Celtics on Wednesday, the Nets had a five-point lead and an opportunity to go home with a split.
Brooklyn, despite its small backcourt, was winning the possession game: It had attempted one more field goal and one more free throw than Boston and had similarly slight edges in second-chance points, fast break points and rebounds. The Nets’ offense hadn’t been particularly pretty, but they were efficient enough and their defensive game plan was more or less working. Grant Williams and Al Horford were the Celtics’ two top scorers stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown had combined for 24 points on 8-for-26 shooting and seven turnovers.
Kevin Durant checked in for the stretch run, and then everything went wrong. Brooklyn’s lead, once as large as 17, vanished almost immediately. In less than eight minutes, Boston went on a 21-4 run, during which the Nets missed 10 of the 12 shots they attempted. They did not make a 3 or attempt a free throw. They did not force a turnover or score in transition.
“We just gotta finish it,” Durant said.
“We just gotta be — the supporting cast has gotta be better for ’em,” Bruce Brown said. “Cut, get off the wing and just be ready to shoot the ball.”

Will The Nets Make Immediate Adjustments
Usually in a playoff series, at least in the past few years, the big adjustment to make is pretty simple: go small. The first team that can go to a small-ball lineup and can play small-ball better wins. It happens time and time again.
On the surface, Game 1 looked very much like this for the Nets. They were -13 with Andre Drummond on the floor and +10 with Nic Claxton on the floor. That seems to paint a pretty clear picture.
But lets actually break this down, from the Drummond perspective. In his first stint starting, Drummond was -2, basically a coin flip. In his second stint, Drummond was +2. Then in the third, he was -11, and he didnt play in the fourth.
In that third quarter, you cant really find any examples of him specifically getting beat.
Bruce Brown got beat for an offensive rebound on this play that Drummond cant be expected to track, and it leads to an open 3-pointer for Marcus Smart.
Smart was 4-of-5 from the field and 3-of-4 from behind the arc in that stretch. He can have these stretches Smarts a 33% 3-point shooter this season and 32% for his career but the point here is that these buckets are not at all about Drummond.
When the Celtics did put Drummond in pick-and-roll on this play, he did fine
On this play, Bruce Brown just gets worked by Jaylen Brown. Drummond comes to help but Brown gives up position to them. The point here is that Drummond wasnt the problem, on either end.

Boston Won Game 1 With A Jayson Tatum Layup At The Buzzer
Game 1 of the first-round series between the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets was one of the most exciting playoff games in recent memory. It was a back-and-forth battle that culminated with Celtics All-Star forward Jayson Tatum converting a layup off of a pass from as time expired to propel Boston to a 115-114 victory and a 1-0 lead in the series. Tatum finished the game with 31 points, while Nets guard and former Celtic Kyrie Irving led all scorers with 39 points.
It will be tough for Game 2 to match Game 1 in terms of excitement, but we can certainly hope that it does. The Nets will obviously come out with the added motivation of wanting to avoid falling into a 2-0 hole, while the Celtics will again look to protect their home court before the series shifts to Brooklyn for Games 3 and 4.

Denver Started 2023 With A Victory But It Took Longer Than Usual
The Denver Nuggets started off the New Year with a 123-111 win over the Boston Celtics on Sunday night, in which Nikola Jokic finished with a 30-point triple-double. However, the win took longer than usual, and it wasn’t due to overtime. With just over six minutes left in the fourth quarter, Celtics players began noticing that the rim they were shooting on was crooked, which happened as a result of Robert Williams III hanging on the basket after a dunk just a few minutes earlier.
Officials had arena workers come and look at the rim, but instead of getting a quick fix the whole ordeal lasted about 35 minutes. After numerous attempts to try and level the rim that was leaning a bit to the left, the workers inside Ball Arena ended up replacing the rim altogether, but by then any momentum either team built up was lost due to the long delay. After the game, Celtics guard Jaylen Brown took issue with how the delay was handled.
“There was no communication,” Brown told reporters. “They spent all that time trying to fix it, but when we came back, it still looked like it wasn’t even level, in my opinion. So we just wasted all that time, that has an effect on the game. That’s how injuries and stuff happen. Luckily, they didn’t. But that wasn’t good. That whole process was handled poorly, in my opinion, and that had an effect on the game as well. Luckily, nobody got hurt.”
