ALBANY A day after gray wolves officially came off the federal Endangered Species list, lawmakers in New York are urging the state to keep the canines on the list here, even though theyve been extinct in the Empire State for decades.

Retaining them on the states endangered list could help protect potential habitat for the animals should they make a comeback or be imported into the state at some point.

We certainly wanted to put our concerns on the record, Long Island Sen. Todd Kaminsky said of the letter he wrote with his fellow Long Islander Steve Englebrightto state Environmental Commissioner Basil Seggos on Tuesday.

In addition to keeping wolves on the list, they also want to keep the eastern cougar, hawksbill sea turtle, and humpback whale on the New York state Endangered Species list as well.

And they want to retain the osprey, Coopers hawk, and sharp-shinned hawk on the species of special concern list.

A study published recently in Northeastern Naturalist, by Roland Kays and Robert Feranec of the New York State Museum in Albany, confirms that a wolf shot in Saratoga County in 2001 was in fact a wild wolf that migrated naturally into the area, not an escapee from a zoo or breeding facility.

The new discovery could shift the debate on how to conserve the gray wolf, a federally endangered species whose conservation plan is currently under review, and which could lose protection in the eastern part of its U.S. range soon.

The Albany Times-Union reports:

The DEC issued a statement saying the study shows federal U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials need to reverse efforts to remove endangered species protections for wolves in the Northeast.

Said Christopher Amato, assistant commissioner for natural resources, “We continue to believe that natural recovery of wolves in the Northeast is possible and urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to reconsider its recent proposals and to update its wolf recovery plan to reflect this new scientific information and support the natural recolonization by wolves.”

The method used to tell wild from captive wolf was rather ingenious: The researchers analyzed the bones for clues as to what kind of diet the wolves had eaten during their lifetimes.

Protection on New Yorks state endangered species list is even more important now that gray wolves have lost federal Endangered Species Act protection, said Collette Adkins, carnivore conservation director and senior attorney at the Center for Biodiversity.

What is happening with the idea of restoring gray wolves to the northeastern U.S.? The Northern Forest Ecosystem, a 26 million acre forested area from the Adirondack Mountains of New York east through most of Maine, contains suitable gray wolf habitat and lies within the historical range of the gray wolf. Although two animals believed to be wolves were found in Maine during the 1990s and an additional wolf was found in upstate New York, a breeding population is not known to occur there today.

Significant educational efforts by private conservation groups have helped to develop interest in wolf recovery in those areas. The Service is considering options for a recovery strategy. In the meantime, protection remains in place for any naturally occurring wolves that migrate to the United States from Canada.

Along with towering oaks, glittering rivers and tribes of Native Americans, the Europeans who first colonized North America met wolves.

Wolves were an “apex” predator in colonial days, top of the ecological eat-or-be-eaten heap. They were also a little different from the wolves in Europe, noted naturalists, among them evolution’s founder, Charles Darwin.

Writing in his 1859 book On the Origin of Species, which laid down the foundations of evolution as a science, Darwin reported, “There are two varieties of the wolf inhabiting the Catskill Mountains, in the United States, one with a light greyhound-like form, which pursues deer, and the other more bulky, with shorter legs, which more frequently attacks the shepherd’s flocks.”

Later that looked like one of Darwin’s mistakes. History Hybridization And Conservation

Mitochondrial DNA indicates that before the arrival of Europeans, eastern wolves may have numbered at 64,500 to 90,200 individuals. In 1942 it was believed that, before European settlement, the wolf had ranged throughout the wooded and open areas of eastern North America from what is now southern Quebec westward to the Great Plains and towards the Southeastern Woodlands . The region’s indigenous human populations did not fear eastern wolves, though they did occasionally catch them in traps, and their bones occur in native shell heaps.

In 2013, an experiment which produced hybrids of coyotes and northwestern gray wolves in captivity using artificial insemination contributed more information to the controversy surrounding the eastern wolf’s taxonomy. The purpose of this project was to determine whether the female western coyotes are capable of bearing hybrid western gray wolf-coyote pups, as well as to test the hybrid theory surrounding the origin of the eastern wolves. The resulting six hybrids produced in this captive artificial breeding were later transferred to the Wildlife Science Center of Forest Lake in Minnesota, where their behaviors were studied.
