John Colapinto’s latest novel, “Undone,” was recently published in Canada and Japan — but it was rejected by 41 publishers in this country and a similar number in the United Kingdom and Europe. And not because he was a first-time novelist with a book that ever so gently pressed the envelope. His last novel, “About the Author,” was loved. He’s won a National Magazine Award. For a decade he’s been a staff writer at The New Yorker.

After filling out the mountain of paperwork that absolved Dr. Geld of all legal liability, Dez had his chest and loins shaved, then hooked up to a set of electrodes. Geld sat, his delicately tapering fingers on a small switch. Dez was shown photographs and film clips of teenaged females and was administered electric shocks every time his humiliatingly exposed manhood betrayed him. At the end of three weeks of treatment, Geld pronounced himself “stunned” at the tenacity of Dez’s fixations — his erections seemed to be growing more powerful under the combined stimulus of the imagery and the electric jolts.”I cannot say that the prognosis is good,” Geld told him.

Even Im too young to properly appreciate the best of Detroits station wagon era, where utility finally met style, and the result was the beginning of some of the coolest wagons ever.
This particular era began around 1960 and arguably ended about 30 years later with the death of such survivors as the Mercury Grand Marquis Colony Park. This period included such vehicles as the Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser, the Pontiac Grand Safari and the Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser with its side skylights and power tailgate. This was the time where excess was embraced and appreciated, and no one worried about weight, length or emergency handling.
When that era endedblame the minivan if you want, but lets face it, it was timeit put a lot of fake woodgrain installers out of work. But it left a collectible batch of vintage vehicles that are still priced reasonably, and are profoundly usable.

According to BaT, Chrysler built 1,436 New Yorker station wagons in 1961, of which 760 were, like the one for sale here, nine-passenger models.
Under the hood, youll find a 413 cubic-inch Golden Lion V8 with a four-barrel carburetor and a three-speed, push-button Torqueflite transmission. Rated at 350 horsepower, the engine has been rebuilt, as has the transmission.

Tom Brady is very, very good at his job.
But, according to New Yorkers, Boston-haters and one crucial federal agency, he is decidedly not terrific.
Indeed, on Thursday, no less an adversary than the United States Patent and Trademark Office pinned a big L on Mr. Brady, the superstar quarterback of the New England Patriots, when it declined his application to trademark the term Tom Terrific a moniker long associated with Tom Seaver, the beloved New York Mets right-hander who helped pitch the team to a World Series championship in 1969.
The was blunt in its assessment of Mr. Bradys case for the nickname, saying it could falsely suggest a connection with Mr. Seaver, who the office stressed was uniquely and unmistakably the only person associated with the nickname.
Tom Seaver is so well known that consumers would presume a connection, the office wrote.
A situation arose, unfortunately, where we had to consider an immediate defensive and protective action, said Donald H. Yee, Mr. Bradys agent, on Friday. There is no intention ever to impact Tom Seavers legacy.
Ill try to do things a little different in the future, he said.

View Of The World Cover
Saul Steinberg created 85 covers and 642 internal drawings and illustrations for the magazine. His most famous work is probably its March 29, 1976, cover, an illustration most often referred to as “View of the World from 9th Avenue“, sometimes referred to as “A Parochial New Yorker’s View of the World” or “A New Yorker’s View of the World”, which depicts a map of the world as seen by self-absorbed New Yorkers.
The illustration is split in two, with the bottom half of the image showing Manhattan‘s 9th Avenue, 10th Avenue, and the Hudson River , and the top half depicting the rest of the world. The rest of the United States is the size of the three New York City blocks and is drawn as a square, with a thin brown strip along the Hudson representing “Jersey”, the names of five cities and three states scattered among a few rocks for the United States beyond New Jersey. David Milch Headlines Most Uncomfortable Panel Discussion Ever At New Yorker Fest
Three things you would have learned at Saturday mornings Outside the Box TV panel at the New Yorker Festival:
1. Premium cable is better than a network, at least if youre a TV creator.Three out of the five panelists all agreed, not surprisingly, that being on cable gives them greater freedom, while David Shore and David Milch dissented. Shore argued that although House cant show as much nudity , the shows never been asked to avoid controversial subjects. As for Milch, well well get to that.
2. This truly is a Golden Age of television.At least, thats how you felt after watching the clips from these five excellent shows. Sure, Weeds has gone off the rails this year, and Milchs John From Cincinnati was a wipeout, but there was an exceptionally well-curated panel. And unlike at many New Yorker Fest events, the moderator here, Tad Friend, both knew his stuff and knew when to stay out of the way. Such as when David Milch started well, well get to that.
All of which was made more interesting by the fact that most everything he said was willfully ignorant and more or less true. Still, you come to see the guy who made Battlestar Galactica, you dont expect a lecture on the seeming doubleness of Jews. So perhaps we should add a corollary:

Theres way more to the town of New Paltz than its namesake SUNY campus, but its partially thanks to many of the schools alumni that the scene there has become as vibrant as it has, with many of them opening restaurants or adding to the buzzy art and music scene. It was time, Biden insisted, to vote. Democrats gave him a standing ovation. What was not clear was whether and when they would give him the vote. No matter Bidens urgency, it seems that Congress still operates under the never-do-today-what-you-can-put-off-until-tomorrow rule.
In 2020, Biden campaigned as a dealmakernot a Trump, I-could-sell-you-the-Brooklyn-Bridge-type dealmaker, but an actual Washington-insider-who-can-make-this-town-work-again-type dealmaker. This is why the stakes for him now are so high. Its become a basic test of his ability to deliver.

New Yorker Satire That Denmark Wants To Buy The Us Has Twitter Wits Swooning

The New Yorker published a satirical story on Friday that Denmark wants to buy the U.S. and readers were loving it.
The piece spoofed President Donald Trumps reported interest in buying the Danish territory of Greenland. Greenland and Denmarks officials slammed the idea as ridiculous and final proof that Trump has gone mad.
In any case, some wondered, why would anyone choose to be ruled by the U.S. government? For one thing, the people of Greenland would lose their national health benefits.
I am sure a majority in Greenland believes it is better to have a relation to Denmark than the United States, a Danish member of Parliament from Greenlands second-largest party told Reuters.
The New Yorker spoof took that rejection of U.S. governance a step further.
As we have stated, Greenland is not for sale, New Yorker columnist Andy Borowitz of the magazines Borowitz Report wrote, imagining the response of an anonymous Danish official. We have noted, however, that during the Trump regime, pretty much everything in the United States, including its government, has most definitely been for sale.
Denmark would be interested in purchasing the United States in its entirety, with the exception of its government, the column continues. Trump would have to be relocated, with Russia and North Korea as possible destinations.
Twitter users loved it and made a lot of hygge references.
