Tips For A Successful New

When dealing with common names, it can be difficult to find the right person amidst 330 years of U.S. history. Thankfully, there are multiple ways in which you can avoid adding people to your family tree who have no relation to you.

The problem lies within the way records were taken before modern recordkeeping standards were introduced. A newspaper editor likely recorded information from oral sources therefore, they may have misspelled a name or made a blatant factual error.

Here are some more advanced tips for making sure you find the right ancestors via New-Yorker Staats-Zeitung historical data:

  • Search for a relative by their initials. It was common practice for people to be recorded officially by the initials of their first and middle names.
  • Female relatives were often recorded via their husbands name. Rather than searching for a female ancestors name, try searching for their husbands name instead.
  • Use common misspellings. One wrong initial could mean you miss that forgotten family member.

It can be time-consuming but incredibly exciting to come across family members youd never heard of before.

The New-Yorker Staats-Zeitung archive can add some color to the names. Discover your story. Be amazed at what you find.

The 1974 Reawakening Of The Black Weekly

Newspaper New York Times (USA). Newspapers in USA ...

The New York Age, a firebrand fighter of racial injustice that died in the nineteen fifties, its zeal spent, was born again with its demeanor changed but its aim primarily the same. Adam C. Powell, the executive editor of the weekly newspaper, said that the paper would attempt to regain the eminence of the old Age, which was known during its heyday as the distinguished black newspaper of opinion. The initial press run of the paper in 1974 was 100,000 copies and it was sold at newsstands for 25 cents.

New York Sees Rise In Child Hospitalizations As Omicron Hammers Us

Print

With omicron cases on the rise, New York health officials have reported an increase in hospitalized children, as the White House promised Sunday to quickly resolve the United States’ COVID-19 test shortage.

The New York State Department of Health warned “of an upward trend in pediatric hospitalizations associated with COVID-19,” in a statement Friday.

In New York City, it “identified four-fold increases in COVID-19 hospital admissions for children 18 and under beginning the week of December 5 through the current week,” it said.

Approximately half of the admissions are younger than five, an age group that is vaccine ineligible, the department added.

The number of COVID-19 cases in the United States is on the rise, with an average of nearly 190,000 new infections daily over the past seven days, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University.

The arrival of the new omicron variant, compounded by holiday celebrations that typically include travel and family reunions, have caused a rush on tests in the United States, where it is difficult to get one in many locations.

Top U.S. pandemic advisor Anthony Fauci on Sunday acknowledged a COVID-19 “testing problem” and vowed to make more tests available to Americans next month.

“One of the problems is that that’s not going to be totally available to everyone until we get to January and there are still some issues now of people having trouble getting tested,” Fauci told ABC News.

Roughly 19% Of The Citys 4000 Ems Workers Were Out Sick On Saturday Up From The Typical Rate Of About 5% Officials Say

NEW YORKAll they wanted for Christmas was more help.

The FDNY faced a shortage of EMS crews over the holiday, stretching the department thin as it struggled to respond to a surge of emergency calls made worse by the Omicron wave.

Roughly 19% of the citys more than 4,000 EMS workers were out sick Saturday, Christmas Day, up from the typical rate of about 5%, an FDNY spokesman said.

The shortage caused in part by crews isolating with COVID-19 cases comes as the citys daily number of cases continued a record breaking streak.

New York state figures show there were more than 27,000 confirmed cases of the virus in the city in the 24-hour period ending Friday morning, and a positivity rate of more than 10%. City hospitalization rates, however, remain lower than previous pandemic peaks.

But Anthony Alomojera, vice president of Local 3621 the FDNYs EMS officers union pointed out theres still been a rush of unvaccinated New Yorkers with COVID-19 who need ambulances.

Christmas Day is usually not that busy, said Alomojera. This isnt people falling down and breaking their legs. Its COVID related.

The FDNY over the holiday got about 4,500 ambulance calls per day. With too few crews to get the job done, FDNY brass on Friday eliminated the departments cap on overtime work for EMS workers and will allow crews to work shifts of up to 18 hours at their discretion, according to a department memo.

Find A Real Shortstop

We Proved Russian Pilots Bombed a Hospital. Then They Did It Again. | NYT Visual Investigations

There are a few paths the Yankees can take when it comes to shortstop. Whichever they opt for, they must, at the bear minimum, get someone who can actually play the position.

Gleyber Torres did not clear that low bar each of the last two seasons, and Brian Cashman admitted as much. Now the Yankees can sign a high-priced star when the lockout ends, as Carlos Correa and Trevor Story are still available. Or they can add a veteran stopgapJosé Iglesias and Andrelton Simmons remain on the marketto hold the fort down until top prospects Oswald Peraza and Anthony Volpe are ready. Either way, the Yankees need to make a move.

Add Certainty To The Rotation

New Yorks rotation was stellar in 2021, ranking sixth in fWAR. However, the Yankees went into the season reliant on a handful of starters that had not thrown many innings in previous years. Essentially, their gamble paid off.

As presently constructed, the Yankees will make that same bet in 2022. Outside of Gerrit Cole and Jordan Montgomery, there are no sure commodities among rotation candidates. Luis Severino has not pitched a full season since 2018, and the often-injured Jameson Taillon is coming off ankle surgery. Nestor Cortes Jr. came out of nowhere last year, but can he replicate that performance? Youngsters Domingo Germán, Michael King and Luis Gil, meanwhile, have had mixed success in the rotation.

A little more certainty could go a long way for the Yankees. At the very least, it never hurts to have reliable depth. Of course, thats easier to say than find after the pre-lockout frenzy left few quality free agent starters available.

The New Yorker Newspaper: The Hunger Strike

Posted by Jenna Krajeski

Just before the midday clouds broke with snow on the first day of March, a large crowd, including nearly eighty mayors with the pro-Kurdish B.D.P. , gathered in the backyard of the B.D.P. offices in the Kayapinar neighborhood of Diyarbakir, the second-largest city in southeastern Turkey. The office, a two-story house painted red, yellow, and green, the colors of the Kurdish flag, is set back from Diyabakirs new wide highways by white metal fences whose barbed wire and spindly tree branches seemed to be the days only security. Along the path to the yard, someone had built a wood fire inside of a metal drum, and men huddled around it, smoking cigarettes and rubbing their hands together for warmth.

They were there to protest the ongoing arrests of B.D.P. officials detained because of their link to the Union of Kurdish Communities . The Turkish government considers the K.C.K to be urban arm of the outlawed P.K.K., which is classified as a terrorist organization by the U.S. and the E.U., and for over thirty years has been in an armed conflict with the Turkish state. But protesters all over the country have felt that the K.C.K. arrests go too far, imprisoning dissenting voices, not terrorists, and exposing a broken, clogged, and biased justice system. Since April, 2009, over six thousand people have been arrested, including politicians, lawyers, activists, journalists, students, and professors.

Stop Fretting Over Money

The easiest way to abide by these other resolutions is to stop worrying about money.

The Yankees have made it a point to stay under the luxury tax in some recent years, and its undoubtedly hindered their championship goals while simultaneously bringing the sincerity of those ambitions into question. Whatever the luxury tax looks like under the new CBA, the Yankees will likely be over it in 2022, but that was always going to be the case due to arbitration raises. The Yankees need to spend beyond that if they want to make the additions necessary to win, and they most certainly can afford to.
