In New York, youll be disqualified from getting a CDL if you drive a commercial motor vehicle without a commercial learners permit or commercial drivers license. Current CDL holders in New York are disqualified if they commit the following offenses:

• Committing a felony while using a CMV
• Causing a fatality through negligent operation of a CMV
• Refusing to take a BAC test

• Operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol content of 0.08% or higher

Some violations may suspend your CDL for a few months or even a few years. Second-time offenses can lead to lifetime CDL suspensions.

Drivers have been required to have a commercial driver’s license in order to drive certain commercial motor vehicles since April 1, 1992. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has developed and issued standards for State testing and licensing of CDL holders. These standards require States to issue CDLs to certain CMV drivers only after the driver passes knowledge and skills tests administered by the State and related to the type of vehicle the driver expects to operate.

Drivers are required to obtain and hold a CDL if they operate in interstate, intrastate, or foreign commerce and drive a vehicle that meets one or more of the classifications of a CMV described below. Restrictions are placed on a CDL when a driver takes the Skills Test in a vehicle which lacks critical equipment present in particular types of CMVs. Therefore, to avoid restrictions, drivers should take the Skills Test in the same type of vehicle for which they are seeking a CDL to operate.

Louisiana Cdl Medical Exams

Other than passing the exams, you must be considered physically fit to receive your CDL. When you go to your local Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles location to apply for your commercial learner’s permit, you will have to bring with you:

• A signed and completed Medical Examination Form .

You will also have to declare the type of driving you intend on doing with your CDL, in a process called self-certification. To do so, you’ll also need to bring in a completed Supplemental Form for CDL Application .

How To Apply For A Junior Driver License

DJ- Junior Operator driver license will give you more driving privileges that vary considerably in Upstate New York, New York City and Long Island due to the Graduated License Law.

You cannot drive within the five boroughs of New York City under any circumstances until you receive your adult license. You may drive in Nassau and Suffolk counties without a supervising driver only between your home and the place of study or employment. In upstate New York you may drive without a supervising driver only between 5 AM and 9 PM and only directly between your home and your place of study or employment between9 PM and 5 AM. Whether or not you need to comply with federal medical requirements depends on your exempted or non-exempted state. Those who drive a commercial vehicle or heavy equipment for the following reasons, either interstate or intrastate are often qualified as exempted and do not need to comply with federal medical requirements, however additional training may be required by the organization in question.

Red Hook on the Road helps unemployed New Yorkers who already have their Class D license start new careers in commercial driving. Following four weeks of classroom and behind-the-wheel training, students take the NYS Commercial Drivers License road test. Once grads are licensed, theyre ready to be placed in a job with our network of employers throughout the city.

OUR PROGRAM

Red Hook on the Roads CDL training program is four weeks long, with one week of in-class instruction and three weeks of behind-the-wheel instruction. Trainees learn map reading, how to maneuver large vehicles, defensive driving, and other skills needed on the job. Following the training course, graduates receive two years of job placement assistance, career counseling, and support as they continue working and advance into new roles.

All BWI training programs are offered free of charge. However, trainees must be able to cover their personal expenses during the training and job search. We are unable to provide stipends.

Finding A Truck Driving School

The Professional Truck Driver Institute is a great resource for meeting the supervised driving requirements. The PTDI is also supported by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration , which means that you’ll be taught with federal standards in mind.

In order for a course to be considered PTDI-certified, it must include a minimum of 148 hours of instruction that includes:

• Identifying and fixing mechanical problems.
• Taking the correct action at road signs and railroad tracks.

La Cdls For Military Members

The FMCSA has established a program that may allow you to bypass the skills test in Louisiana if:

• You’re currently in the military and operate of a military vehicle equivalent to a Commercial Motor Vehicle.OR
• You left the service less than 1 year ago where you operated a military vehicle equivalent to a Commercial Motor Vehicle.

While qualifying applicants will have their skills tests waived, they will still be required to pass all written exams and pay all appropriate fees.

What To Expect From A Private School With Cdl Training

Schools vary on how training courses are conducted, from the amount of time , cost, and whether day or night classes are offered. Private schools will also offer college credits, or a certificate, upon completing their program. Below is a list of what you can look for and expect from a school.

• Minimum of 4 weeks of training with some training programs going up to 12 weeks.
• Between 100 and 400 hours of training which is split between classroom and behind the wheel time.
• Classroom instruction covering safety precautions, regulations, maintaining records, and other valuable tools to pass the knowledge exam.
• Behind the wheel time on a driving range, highway, interstate , village and city driving as well as day and night driving to prepare you for your road skills exam.
