What Is There To Do In Washington Dc

The U.S. capital is home to some of the country’s most iconic landmarks, museums, and monuments, and the vast majority of them are completely free to enjoy. Start at the National Mall, an expansive lawn that stretches from the Lincoln Memorial to the Capitol Building and is known as “America’s Backyard.” Apart from landmarks like the Washington Monument, White House, and Vietnam Veterans Memorial, many of the Smithsonian Museum buildings are located on the Mall and all of them are free to enter. But there’s a lot more to Washington, D.C., than just history. The Georgetown neighborhood is known for its rich foodie and bar scene, with top restaurants and lively spots for going out.

Get A Real Feel For Nyc On Foot

If youre not in a hurry, traversing the city on foot is one of the best ways to see the sights. Pick a Brooklyn neighborhood and get lost in its side streets, or choose an avenue and follow it from one end of Manhattan to the next.

Just be aware of your surroundings the sidewalks are so densely crowded that if youre staring up at the skyline or down at your phone, or if you stop suddenly or change directions unexpectedly, youre bound to collide with someone sooner or later. And New Yorkers are not shy about expressing their dissatisfaction with foolish tourists!

Sidewalk etiquette dictates that you walk no more than two people across when others are around any more than that, and youll be blocking the flow of foot traffic in either direction. Note that winter brings chilly conditions for exploring at street level, made worse by icy winds and periodic dumps of heavy snow. Luckily, there are plenty of warm cafes and coffee shops to duck into when the cold bites.

Best Things To Do In New York With A Baby

When travelling, Steve and I are big fans of doing the same things we would normally have done before Otis arrived. Of course, some things are out of the question, such as late-night bars, clubs and theatre performances, but there are a surprising amount of things you can do with a baby in tow.

Infants under one are often easily entertained by just gazing at the world around them, so enjoy that while you can before they start having opinions. Also, if your baby will sleep in their stroller, they can have their naps while youre out and about.

However, all babies are different and you know your baby best, so make sure to do what suits you as a family perhaps that means committing to one nap in the hotel or not having whole days out and about. Do what suits you best.

There are endless things to do in New York, but these are my top 10 favourites. Ive also included a few baby-friendly things that we heard about, but didnt have the time to do on this trip.

New York: Visa Categories And Application

Visa Categories: Theres More Than Just the Green Card

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services distinguish between immigrant visas and nonimmigrant visas. For immigrant visas, there are five preference categories for employment-based immigration, EB-1 through EB-5, along with the infamous Green Card, officially called the Diversity Visa Program. On the website of the Bureau of Consular Affairs, you can find more information on the Green Card Lottery.

Preference categories EB-2, EB-3 and EB-4 are for people with high qualifications and/or special skills required for a particular job in the US. The onus of proof, so to speak, lies with your prospective employer, in the sense that they must obtain an approved Labor Certification from the US Department of Labor.

This certification must provide evidence that, firstly, no equally suitable US candidate could be found to fill the vacant position. Secondly, it should prove that working conditions and wages of US citizens in similar jobs will not be adversely affected by hiring an overseas worker.

Employers will not need to acquire a Labor Certification for expats in academics, executives of multinational companies, outstanding artists, internationally renowned athletes, and foreign investors . You can read more about immigrant visas and permanent workers on the USCIS website.

Figuring Out Uptown Versus Downtown

Well, youve made the rookie mistake of swiping the card before checking if youre entering on the correct side of the platform. When entering larger stations, you can swipe first then pick a direction . But with smaller stations , if you swipe on the downtown side of the platform but want to go uptown, you will not be able to switch sides. In such a scenario, you would either have to take the subway in the wrong direction until the next big station where you can cross over, or you would have to exit, cross the street to the other side and swipe again.

So lets take a step back and talk a bit more about this whole Downtown vs. Uptown concept:

Manhattan is a skinny island thats only about 2 miles wide and 13 miles long. The shape of this crowded island naturally led to a mostly linear subway system . That means that most of the subway lines in Manhattan generally run in a north-south fashion. In NY parlance, north is uptown, south is downtown. Piece of cake. Even a pigeon can remember that.

In many other cities Downtown implies a commercial core or hub, which could be up, down, left, or right. In New York City, however, Downtown literally implies down town. So if you look at a map of Manhattan, Downtown would be towards the bottom.

Given this fact, most subway stations in Manhattan will have a Downtown side and an Uptown side . The side you need depends on two factors: Where you are and where you want to go.

Several museums line the east and west sides of Central Park. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is along 5th Avenue at 82nd Street. The American Museum of Natural History is on the opposite side of the park on 81st Street and Central Park West. Both of these museums are musts on your first visit to New York City.

From the Temple of Dendur to Impressionist paintings by Monet and Renoir at the Met and the Prehistoric Halls and ocean and mammal exhibits on display at the Museum of Natural History, these stops offer the quintessential NYC museum experience.

Choose 1 of these museums to begin your day. After a few hours, and likely the effect of museum fatigue, head outside for some fresh air and a stroll through Central Park.

Central Park spans from 59th Street to 110th Street between 5th Avenue and Central Park West. Walk the pathways and discover Sheeps Meadow, the Lake, and all the fountains, monuments, gardens, and bridges along the way. Be willing to get lost which is nearly impossible if you use the buildings and the traffic noise on the parks east or west sides as bearings. Download the Central Park app to show where you are in relation to the parks popular sights.

Meander to the opposite side of the park from where you entered and walk toward whichever of the above museums you have left to visit. Spend your afternoon enjoying another of New York Citys incredible museums.

What Is The Fastest Way To Get From Washington Dc To New York City

Although the plane is the quickest journey, once you factor in all of the additional time it takes to get to and from the airport, check in for your flight, go through security, and wait at your gate, it actually takes much longer than the train. Amtrak service brings passengers from Union Station in Washington directly to Penn Station in Manhattan, saving you nearly two hours of travel time just from commuting to airports. The time of the journey from city center to city center depends on which train you choose, with the fastest ones arriving in two and a half hours and others taking up to four hours.

Tickets start at $54 for a coach seat, but those quickly sell out and you may be stuck paying for business class, which costs anywhere from $130 to over $300. If you don’t see a coach ticket available at the time you want to leave, try looking at other trains throughout the day. Amtrak offers up to 40 daily trips on this popular route, so chances are you can find a more affordable ticket at another time.
