But what is it?
An Apostille is a certificate that attaches to your legal document, verifying and authenticating that the document is authentic.
You may have been told to get an Apostille for your documents by an official in another country . Thatâs because Apostilles are used when public documents need to be produced abroad. If you have been told that you need an Apostille, it is because your documents require another level of verification to become valid for use in another country.
Apostilles authenticate the seals and signatures of officials on public documents such as birth certificates, notarial certificates, court orders, or any other document issued by a public authority. With an Apostille, those documents can be recognized by foreign authorities.
The Apostille itself is a full page certificate. It is permanently attached to a notarized or certified document .

Can I Use An Apostille For A Non Hague Conference Country
In some cases, even though a country is not a signatory to The Hague Conference, the Apostille is still known, recognized and accepted as authentic on a case by case basis. This has come about because of the official governmental source of an Apostille and its inherent simplicity.
We cannot however, offer any guarantees that this will be the case. Should you wish to use an Apostille in a non-member country, it is essential that you confirm beforehand whether the entity you wish to present the Apostille stamped document to, will recognize the authenticity of an Apostille. It may also be the case that further Legalisation or Attestation is required before the Apostille document is recognized as legal. In any case, the first step is the Apostille. The Apostille is a pre-requisite to further Legalization or Attestation.

Apostille is a specific and simplified form of authentication of a document compared to a regular multi-step hierarchical certification procedure for authentication and legalization, including certification by the Authentication Office of the Department of State and legalization by the embassy or consulate of the foreign country where the document is to be used. Apostille is introduced as an instrument for foreign certification among countries that have joined the 1961 Hague Convention abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents. Every year more and more countries join the Hague Convention. Check the current list of countries on the official page Documents destined for use in participating countries and their territories should be certified by one of the officials in the jurisdiction in which the document has been executed. How To Apostille A Translation Sample Translation Affidavit
Some foreign countries require that your document is translated, and that the translation is apostilled. Translation agencies usually provide an Affidavit of Translation Accuracy which is signed by a translator who confirms that he/she is competent to translate from English into the language of the target country, and that the translation is a true, complete and accurate translation of the original document. Then, the translator’s signature is notarized, and the document is ready for an apostille.
Increasingly, translation agencies use the services of translators who work remotely, sometimes in foreign countries. In this case it is not possible to have the signature of the translator notarized. As a solution, the translation agencies provide a different kind of affidavit where a manager or another agency’s official confirms that the translation was performed by a professional translator, and that the translation is accurate. The signature of the manager is then notarized.

Additional Information About An Apostille
The United States is part of the 1961 Hague Convention abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents. The Convention provides for the simplified certification of public documents to be used in countries that have joined the convention. Under the Hague Convention, signatory countries have agreed to recognize public documents issued by other signatory countries if those public documents are authenticated by the attachment of an internationally recognized form of authentication known as an “apostille.” The apostille ensures that public documents issued in one signatory country will be recognized as valid in another signatory country.

Remember when I said to disregard the handout from the Municipal Archives? Thats because the handout says the DOSs office is at 123 William Street, 19th floor. That is incorrect. The DOS hasnt been on the 19th floor for years.
Instead, head to 123 William Street, but go into the entrance on the left with the DOS seal over the doorway. Head up the escalator to the 2nd floor.
Google Street view image of the entrances to 123 William Street. Head to the entrance on the left with the tiny blue Department of State seal over the entrance.
When you reach the second floor, take a number from the dispenser on the right side of the main desk. The following countries accept the Apostille as a standard form of international document legalization.
