A nanny share is a childcare arrangement where one nanny cares for the child or children of two or more families at the same time. A nanny share is an alternative childcare option to daycare or hiring a nanny for one family. You can have a full nanny share, which means that one nanny takes care of two families kids at the same time without any individualized care . Another option is a partial share, when a nanny takes care of two families children sometimes individually and sometimes together.

In a nanny share, the childcare costs are cut because the nanny is sharing time between the children. For example, if you pay a nanny $15 an hour to watch one child, you may pay $11 an hour during share hours. Nanny shares may be full-time or part-time.

Housing Costs In New York

New York is widely known to be one of the most expensive cities in the U.S., and housing is one of the main reasons why. Many young professionals opt to live with roommates in order to defray housing costs or expand their options for apartments.

Housing prices vary dramatically by borough and by neighborhood. Generally, outer boroughs such as Staten Island and The Bronx have lower housing costs compared to Manhattan or Brooklyn.

Impact Of State Funding

New York City’s schools chief Richard Carranza on partially opening in fall

In Monroe County, cutbacks also curtailed payments for absences and partial day attendance.

As well, Perez said, a focus on state funding for services like Universal Pre-Kindergarten meant that providers quickly found their own finances became more stable if they focused on preschool-age children too. That led to a decline in the number of slots available for infant and toddler care.

About five years ago, Ibero stopped providing before-school and after-school care because payments became so irregular. “It was costing me more to pay an administrator to deal with for the five families using it that it just didn’t make dollar sense and some other centers just did the same thing,” said Perez.

Ibero now provides only fully-funded free programming like Early Head Start for infants and toddlers, Universal Pre-Kindergarten for 4-year-olds and Early Pre-Kindergarten for 3-year-olds. Perez said she’s seen other day care providers follow suit.

“Infants and toddlers are very costly to care for,” she said, noting that such programs require one adult caregiver per four infants, and one caregiver per five toddlers. “It’s not that want to stop caring for infants, or are doing this deliberately, but they want to keep the doors open when DSS and subsidy payments are so wishy-washy, most centers now have few toddler and infant spots and focus on preschoolers.”

Ibero offers five infant and toddler classes, with a maximum enrollment of 8 children in each class. There is a lengthy waiting list.

Average Cost Of Daycare In Nyc Tops $16g Leaving Many Families Struggling To Provide Care For Kids

Prepare to shell out big bucks to get your kid into daycare.

The average annual cost of infant care in the city is a whopping $16,250, according to a new report by Public Advocate Letitia James and the cost of childcare overall is increasing by $1,612 each year.

For a family of three living at the poverty line, that would mean spending 58% of their total income on daycare alone.

Many families can get subsidies to help pay for care, but 75% of those eligible don’t actually receive them in part because of a shortage of available seats, according to James.

“There are too many families that cannot afford child care for their children, and as a result they have to give up their jobs or they have to take a pay cut to take care of their children,” she said Monday outside City Hall.

“There are far too few seats for all the children in the city who need care.”

Even with a subsidy, a single parent making $25,000 a year would have to pay $3,172 in fees 13% of their income, according to the report.

“These fees, though subsidized, are still too high for low-income families who must stretch slim budgets to cover the costs of rent, transportation, food and other numerous expenses,” the report said.
