Experience Brooklyn Like A Local At These 10 Old School Neighborhood Italian Bakeries

When it comes to old school Italian bakeries in New York, Brooklyn takes the cake. For this list, we’ve narrowed it down from the two dozen-plus choices across the Big Apple’s most populous borough to a pastry-centric group of bakeries with that cozy neighborhood institution feel.

Each one is slightly different in terms of what’s popular, café or takeout only, and their surroundings. But they all have one thing in common: more often than not, the staff will know the customer by name along with what they tend to order.

Despite what some say, New Yorkers can be very friendly. But bakeries are like any other fast-paced service industry in the city that never sleeps. If there’s a long line, ask the person in front or behind you what to order instead of holding up the line with questions once it’s your turn. Follow that simple rule and you’ll be able to experience Brooklyn like a local at any or all of these old-school Italian bakeries.

Bakeries in Brooklyn are no joke. From old-school generational Italian bakeries, French bakeries, fusion bakeries to little shops just selling sweet treats and delicious fresh baked bread, our borough is LOADED!

In fact, Brooklyn is a powerhouse for baked goods and bread. From sugar-filled treats to savory loaves of lard bread, the bakeries in Brooklyn are some of the most famous in the world. After all, this is where the famous Brooklyn Blackout Cake originated! This popular dessert combines layers of chocolate pudding, frosting, and cake crumbles to create a delicious dessert.

Brooklyn is also home to the famous Ebingers Bakery, which closed down in 1972. Although this is originally where the blackout cake came from, many bakeries in Brooklyn have followed in their footsteps and created their own recipes.

A fun fact about this bakery in Brooklyn, Ebingers created the Brooklyn Blackout Cake in recognition of the mandatory blackout drills to protect Navy Yard from enemy planes during World War II which employed over 40,000 workers.

Needless to say, the cake was popularized and stuck around even after the war.

Below are the 25 best bakeries in Brooklyn mixing in the old-school family-run mom and pop shops to the new kids in town shaking things up with their legendary treats and bread.

Don Paco Lopez Panaderia

Don Paco Lopez Panaderia is a goldmine of Mexican sweet bread. The family business goes back 3 generations to the state of Puebla in Mexico, and has been one of the best bakeries in Brooklyn since 1991. They provide both the Mexican community and their multicultural neighbors alike with the homestyle flavor of Mexico.

Theres a multitude of options to choose from as far the pan dulce is concerned. If its your first time visiting I suggest the traditional and easily recognizable concha. At Don Pacos they bake it as good as anywhere youll find in NYC, making it airy and fluffy. It has a sweet, sugary topping that crumbles with every bite.

After you try the concha its all fair game. I suggest letting your inner child loose and grabbing anything that looks good. When I was growing up my parents would buy enough pan dulce to have with coffee over the next few days, and I encourage you do the same at this delicious Brooklyn Bakery.

Best Vegan Bakeries In Brooklyn

In Brooklyn, Eat & Drink, Guides by Guest AuthorJuly 19, 2021

Our guide to the best vegan bakeries in Brooklyn features a guest contributor, Sonia who is based in New York and has been on a plant-based diet for years and a completely vegan diet for over a decade.

For years, I worked slinging coffees, cakes, and sandwiches at a little café in Norman, Oklahoma. While we were considered a vegan friendly restaurant, all our cakes, pies and cookies were vegan always. I would get such a giggle out of customers who had a certain idea of what vegan was, and would stand there gob smacked- by the massive triple layer lavender cakes, stacks of cowgirl cookies, and massive trays of brownies.

They would sometimes ask, these are vegan? What are they made out of?. To which I would smile, and reply, Sugar, flour, and fat just like any other cake!

Vegan baking has come so far, even just in the decade I have been vegan. Many bakeries now carry at least one vegan cupcake option, and some more vegan-friendly or strictly vegan bakeries push the limits on what is available when youre struck by a sweet tooth attack.

Here are some of my top picks for the best vegan-friendly bakeries in Brooklyn. For more vegan meals around the city, check out the best vegan restaurants in NYC for more options!
