The village was once the Bohemian capital of New York and the center for the LGBT, 60s Counterculture, and Beat movements. While that era is long gone, the feel of the neighborhood is not.
Get lost on a side street after side street of gorgeous townhouses and tree-lined blocks. The neighborhood is simultaneously quiet and happening with a great music scene. If you arelooking for where to stay in New York City that has a great history this is it!

Why Avoid Long Island City
There are fewer bars, restaurants, and general things to do in the area as its still up and coming so if you like a lot of things to do within walking distance then constantly getting the train may not suit you. This also wont suit people looking for a high-end experience being a largely residential area.

The popular High Line, an elevated linear park built on abandoned railroad tracks, is nearby too. A great mid-range hotel in Chelsea is the Stewart Hotel, which offers comfortable rooms at great rates.

9. Brooklyn, a place to stay near Manhattan, NYC
We stayed here once, but we regretted it, since we chose an area that had no subway nearby and it was very difficult to get to Manhattan. We had to take a bus that only came every half hour and was expensive. However, there are areas in Brooklyn that are very well connected to public transport and from which youll have no problem getting to Manhattan.

Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO are two areas that I recommend for looking for accommodation in New York.
Brooklyn Heights is a very quiet area, full of residential streets and low buildings. DUMBO, meanwhile, is a neighborhood where artists and bohemians settled, who then turned the area into a place full of modern cultural and local movements.

The transport links here arent great so if this is your first time in the city and youre hoping to see lots of the main tourist sights then this may be a bit of an awkward location. Its quite busy and crowded here and theres not a huge range of accommodation. It also generally looks run down and is quite residential in parts so it may not have the New York bright lights vibe many are looking for.

Although Astoria, in Queens, was traditionally NYCs Greek neighborhood, theres now a huge number of Italian, Brazilian, Baltic, Irish, and Egyptian residents in the area. Astoria is far from the action of Manhattan but its a cheap place to stay and has lots of amazing cultural things to do. Its a whole different NYC than what you imagine. Check it out even if you dont stay in the area.

Any of the more residential areas would also be a consideration, such as Chelsea or Greenwich Village.
Places to avoid would be the loud party places like Meatpacking District and Lower East Side.

Williamsburg in Brooklyn is hipster central. Its home to offbeat restaurants, bars, clothing stores, and coffee shops, and an Im cool because Im different attitude. Youll find lots of flannel and beards here! Its not as hipster as it used to be thanks to all the Manhattanites who came for cheaper rents but I really enjoy this area because its close to Manhattan, cheap, and filled with fun bars , top-rated restaurants, incredible bars, art, wonderful markets , and music shows.
