Wole Soyinka is a giant of world literature. A Nobel laureate, hes written more than two dozen plays, a vast amount of poetry, several memoirs, and countless essays and short storiesbut, up until recently, only two novels. His third novel was published this past September, forty-eight years after the previous one. It’s called Chronicles from the Land of the Happiest People on Earth. The book is both a political satire and a murder mystery involving four friends, with subplots that include a secret society dealing in human body parts and more corruption than any one country can bear.

Like his cousin the Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, Soyinka has made social commentary integral to his work. Soyinkas journey into political activism began at a young age, and, in 1965, when he was twenty-one, he was arrested for armed robbery. But Soyinka tells Vinson Cunningham that political opposition didnt come naturally to him. I love my peace of mind and my tranquility, he says, I cannot attain that if I have not attended to an issue or problem which I know is . . . manifesting itself in a dehumanizing way in others. Chronicles explores not only how the governments are corrupt but the effect of corruption on societies and peoples. Soyinka also talks about why he waited so long to write another novel, and what the medium offers that theatre does not.

Satirical Cartoons

Borowitz: Im actually trying to activate people, raise them out of their depression or despair and say look, we still do have power in this country and we can do something. Now having said that, I do not think that the things I write or say change anybodys mind. Im not trying to convince a Trump voter that this is an evil or an incompetent person. Im only trying to motivate the people who already agree with me. Im preaching to the choir, 100 percent.

New Yorker Columnist Andy Borowitz Takes His Satire Very Seriously

Andy Borowitz takes his satire very seriously. The man behind The Borowitz Report regularly skewers President Donald Trump in The New Yorker, but says the comedy behind the column isnt as easy pickings as one might think.

Morning Shift host Tony Sarabia talked to him about comedy and President Trump ahead of a live event Friday at the Chicago Theater.

On writing satire in the age of Trump

Andy Borowitz: My job historically has been to take the real news and make it slightly more absurd and Trump defies that paradigm. You cannot improve upon what he already does. So it required me to completely change what I do.

Tony Sarabia: In what ways?

Borowitz: Well now Im really just transcribing. I must say, Im not making anything up. Somebody probably is putting a crazy town sign on his oval office door. Its really not a huge leap of the imagination. Im just connecting the dots, coloring in this ridiculous, surreal, fourth-grade coloring book well fourth grade might be pitching a little high its just a ridiculous situation. You cant really make a joke about a joke thats kind of a law of comedy physics.
