In recent years, New York Times has reported growth quarter by quarter, year after year. As such, it is one of the greatest success stories of the newspaper industry in regard to digital transformation. So, lets take a look behind the companys great success and dig deeper into some of the reasons why it has succeeded.
New York Times digital transformation was initiated back in 2011 when the newspaper launched its first paywall on nytimes.com and, thus, began selling digital subscriptions.
Right from the beginning, New York Times chose to have an intelligent paywall meaning that visitors could read up to 20 articles a month free of charge before they were met with a paywall. The company still uses with this method. However, free news got scarcer as the paywall has been tightened up through the years. Today, readers can read five articles a month and free access through social media has been removed altogether. All this happened in order to ensure that multiple users are met by the paywall each month.

The New York Times Company Launches Digital Subscriptions For Wirecutter
Wirecutter is Included With an All Digital Access Subscription.
The New York Times Company announced today that Wirecutter, its product recommendation service, will institute a metered paywall, asking its frequent users to subscribe for unlimited access to its research and recommendations. New York Times All Access digital and home delivery subscribers will continue to receive unlimited access to Wirecutters 1,200+ product reviews, deals coverage and other guides to help them shop confidently online with their existing subscription. A standalone subscription to Wirecutter is available for $5 every four weeks or $40 annually.
While Wirecutter will continue to be an affiliate business, diversifying its revenue sources will help ensure its long-term success and independence, as well as unlock additional business value that can be invested back into the business to serve subscribers, said David Perpich, head of standalone products, The New York Times Company. This change is also a continuation of The Timess push to invest in product experiences that enrich subscriberss lives beyond reading the news, following on the heels of NYT Games and NYT Cooking.

Not As Intuitive As It Once Was
The NYT is full of great and varied content, so this review is not about the content, just the app. Theyve made a few updates to the UI in the past few months, each making the app less intuitive. I used to view my history or saved articles a lot when I didnt have time to finish reading a good story. This used to be easily accessible in a side menu. Now its way more hidden, and I have to click a bunch of times to get to it. I can never remember where it is. Also, the back button is now on the bottom of the screen for most articles, except when you view certain articles like through wire cutter. Everytime I want to click back at the top of the screen , its not there. Sometimes there is a back button at the top of the screen when you click on a link through the article. I clicked on this to bring me back to the article, but instead it took me to the front page. And then I couldnt find the article that I was just reading. Frustrating!These are just examples and sound like small, nit-picky things, but when you are constantly trying to figure out where to click, it adds time and makes the app annoying to use. I wish the UI developers prioritized common sense changes rather than just making the app prettier.

That means if you are reading the NYT articles in Google Chrome and then switch to Firefox or IE, the limit is reset to zero because cookies arent shared across browsers.

You can sample the Times core product 10 articles a month and you can come to us through search and social. So now youll be able to sample Opinion content, but if you want to drink deeply, if youre loyal and cant get enough of it, youre going to be asked to pay.
Loyalty has little to do with all this. Those buying subscriptions are doing so, as best I can tell, for two reasons: stupidity and convenience.
