One important item to note: the above information applies to any marriages taking place in New York City. If you will be officiating at a wedding in Suffolk, Nassau, Westchester, Putnam, or Dutchess counties in New York State, than an online ministerial license is not recognized, and the wedding will not be a legal union. For these five counties you need to get a minister from a recognized church to oversee the ceremony and sign the documents.
Finally, once you have declared the couple married, dont forget that it is the officiants job to fill out the marriage license paperwork and return it to the place where it was issued. If a couple applies for their marriage license in any of the five boroughs, they have the option to be married anywhere in New York State. That said, the marriage license must be signed and returned to the place from which it was originally issued. So if you applied for a marriage license in Manhattan, and were married in Albany, your officiant would need to return your paperwork to Manhattan NOT Albany.

Please be mindful that they only allow this on a case-by-case basis.
What Are The Legal Requirements To Get Married In New York State
In order to legally get married in New York State, youll need to show proof of age through some sort of official documentation or photo ID. You must be 18 years or older to get married if either of the applicants is under 17 years of age, written consent from both the parents and a judge of the family court in that county. Blood tests are not required.
Both parties must be present with all documents and both need to sign in person no representative is permitted to sign for someone else. If you have been previously married, you must provide proof of marriage records, annulment, divorce decree or death certificate to certify that your previous marriage has ended.
Ceremonies must be performed by a certified officiant.

How To Officiate A Wedding
Now that your friend is actually ordained to officiate your wedding, what do they actually have to do? You’ll want to take a look at your local laws again to brush up on the requirements. In most cases, your officiant simply needs to include the declaration of intent, or the “Do you take…” and “I do” vows portion of the ceremony.

How Much Do You Pay A Minister Rabbi Or Other Religious Officiant To Marry You
Many religious officiants who are affiliated with a house of worship dont have a set fee, so it can be a bit confusing to figure out how much to pay them. If you are getting married in a house of worship, the cost of a wedding officiant may be included in the venue fee. If thats not the case, you will likely be expected to give a donation, anywhere from $100 to $300 or more . If youre unsure, dont be afraid to ask the house of worship with which your officiant is affiliated if they have a suggested amount.

Documentation Required By The Nyc City Clerks Officeto Become An Officiant
Now heres the kicker: while the ordination certificate from your chosen church is free, the City Clerks office also requires you to produce two letters:
- You must attach a letter from your local congregation that verifies that you are the pastor or associate pastor of the congregation and that your congregation consents to your registration with the Office of the City Clerk and
- You must attach one of the following documents:
- A copy of the churchs Articles of Incorporation or
- A statement that lists the location of the church, the reason for the churchs founding, the number of trustees of the church, the approximate size of the congregation, and how often the congregation meets.
And this is how these organizations make their money. In the case of the American Fellowship Church, a copy of the membership directory was on sale for $25, and a letter of good standing on church letterhead was $10. For each of these online organizations, you can receive all of the documentation in a packet at a cost of around $35. If you would like to splurge on your new title as Reverend, there are a myriad of trinkets that await you including the all important bumper sticker and hanging parking tag just so you get noticed.

An ordained rabbi and an ordained interfaith minister, this married couple is happy to preside over traditional as well as interfaith and same-sex ceremonies, and theyre also happy to travel: Rabbi Ross once married a couple in Spain. He also co-officiated a Jewish-Christian-Hindu ceremony with a Christian minister and a Hindu pundit in New Jersey. They like to meet with couples at least two times. The cost is $850 plus travel expenses.
How Do We Find A Credible Organization
There are a few large organizations that will ordain online. Some of the most common online ministries are American Fellowship Church, Universal Life Church, Universal Ministries and Rose Ministries. Once you find one that suits you, check with your Secretary of State’s office for legitimacy. The American Fellowship Church, for example, is legally registered with the California Secretary of State’s office as a nonprofit religious organization in good standing.

Who Pays For The Minister At A Wedding
Most resources indicate it is the responsibility of the groom to pay the ministers or rabbis fee or donation and any transportation or lodging expenses of the officiant. However, many couples do not follow this tradition. My experience has shown most of my honorarium comes from the brides side of the aisle.
Officiate Your First Nyc Wedding And Send Back The Paperwork
The ceremony is only the first part. As the officiant, youre also responsible for getting the legal paperwork done. Heres a visual guide on how to complete a NYC marriage license. The couple will be responsible for providing you their marriage license, obtained at least 24 hours before the wedding, but not later than 60 days. After the ceremony, you, the newlyweds, and a witness will need to complete/sign the marriage license, and then you need to send back the paperwork in the envelope provided to the couple. If they obtained their marriage license online via Project Cupid, they will need to upload the signed paperwork in the Project Cupid portal.
