Benefits Become Sticking Point In Bargaining For 1199seiu Nursing Home Workers
Nursing home workers unionized with 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East are laying the groundwork for a possible strike after funding for their health care benefits became a major sticking point in contract negotiations.
More than 33,000 union members employed at 250 nursing homes in the New York metropolitan area are negotiating new, three-year contracts with industry groups that represent the owners of the facilities, all for-profit.
Union leaders staged informational pickets across the city, Long Island and Westchester on Monday and are voting on whether to give their employees 10 days’ notice of a strike if negotiations do not progress.
Neil Heyman, CEO of the Southern New York Association, which represents more than 60 skilled-nursing facilities in the metropolitan area, protested the union’s characterization that negotiations had stalled. He said management had reached tentative agreements with the union on annual wage increases of 2% in the contract’s first year and 3% in the following two years. Benefits, however, are still a point of disagreement.
“There is an elephant in the room, so to speak, because the cost of health insurance for the workers went up so much during the pandemic,” Heyman said.
“We need what we are asking for,” Spencer said.
