Does Brooklyn Italian Heroes Live Up To Its Hype

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. A sandwich shop came over to Staten Island from the other side of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge the new outpost of Brooklyn Italian Heroes from 15th Avenue.

About a month ago, its order-by-number menu was hung on the wall of former Dicks Deli at 857 Castleton Avenue. And I confess to being a bit dubious of such a shop thriving in my West Brighton neighborhood after its predecessors 80-year run.

Mea culpa and color me impressed. After sampling several combinations arranged tidily on fantastical bread, I conclude both hot and cold sandwiches do live up to the hype.

Owners Paul DiSpirito and Rob Zirpoli have officially entered the competitive realm of lunchtime meals offered in the borough. Indeed, Staten Island has a lot of impressive sandwich operations, including one we visited last week on The Dish live broadcast, Johns Famous Deli of Elm Park. And the Brooklyn-born operation makes an excellent addition to Castleton Avenues yummy options Sushi Wen, Presto Pizza, Vodega vegan grocer and deli plus Nurnberger Bierhaus.

Tune in to see the newest place to eat along Castleton Avenue, about a block from Richmond University Medical Center and stones throw from the Civil Court House.
