Academic MedicineThere is a core curriculum in internal medicine and its sub-specialties, which is given by all members of the Department throughout the year.
Regularly scheduled conferences include Medical Grand Rounds, Sub-specialty Rounds, Journal Club, Bedside Teaching Rounds, and Monthly Scientific Seminars with leading scientists, Clinico-Pathologic Conferences, Autopsy conferences with the Departments of Pathology and Radiology. The BronxCare Hospital Center
( formerly know as the
Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center) is a major teaching hospital and a part of The BronxCare Health System.
The Department of Medicine covers about 250 inpatient beds and 37 beds in the ICU and CCU units. Currently, we have 85 full-time faculty members, 108 residents and 20 fellows. In addition, the department runs 6 Ambulatory Care clinics under the Chief of Primary Care & Preventive Medicine. House staff manages all patients admitted under medicine.

The Department Of Dentistry Relocates Its Main Dentistry Practice To New And Expanded Facility
Under the leadership of Dr. Paul E. Gates, Chairman, Dentistry, BronxCare Health System’s Department of Dentistry is continually expanding services in response to the growing dental needs of the Bronx community. In April 2014, the departments main dentistry practice was relocated to 1775 Grand Concourse. The new location, one block north of the hospitals Concourse Division, provides 39 dental chairs . It includes new adult, pediatric, orthodontic, and oral surgery services as well as expanded registration and waiting areas for adults, children, and families.
For adult patients, a wide range of services are available. Endodontic, periodontic, orthodontic, and restorative procedures, including crowns and bridges, root canals, treatment of gum disease, and dentures are provided. 14 individual treatment rooms that feature state-of-the-art equipment are now available. Our increased capacity now gives us the opportunity to treat more patients in a comfortable setting and that is a major benefit to the community as well as our staff, stated Dr. Jewan Singh, Attending, Dentistry.
For patients looking to improve their smile, eight designated orthodontic treatment areas are available. Orthodontists offer retainers and aesthetically pleasing/invisible braces to ensure the best tooth alignment. Cosmetic dentistry, including tooth whitening, bonding, and veneers are also provided.

Dr. Paul Gates received an Associate of Arts degree from Potomac State College and both a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Doctorate of Dental Surgery at West Virginia University. He earned an MBA at Fairleigh Dickinson University. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a former Fellow of the American Council on Education.
Dr. Gates served as the Chairman of the Department of Dentistry and the Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center for twenty-nine years. He also serves as the Chairman of Dentistry for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Health Center. He was been involved in dental education since 1973, previously holding a series of faculty and administrative positions at Fairleigh Dickinson University including Interim Dean of the College of Dental Medicine, Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs and Assistant to the President for Minority Affairs and Health Planning Services at the University.

Treatment By Faculty And Treatment By A Resident
You can choose to have care by a faculty member or by a graduate dental resident. Fees for implants placed or restored by dental residents are reduced. All care provided by the dental residents is directly supervised by a faculty member. Fees for both faculty and resident care are provided below. All residents have graduated from American Dental Association accredited dental schools. They are at Montefiore to gain certification in one of five graduate programs including general dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery or prosthodontics.

The New Jersey Department of Health today announced a new Dental Director for the State of New Jersey.
The appointment of Dr. Darwin K. Hayes, DDS, MHA, FAGD, who began work today, marks the first time in more than 30 years that the state has had a Dental Director.
We are pleased to welcome Dr. Hayes as part of our leadership team, Deputy Commissioner Deborah Hartel said. With his knowledge and expertise, the Department will be able to expand oral health initiatives to address our most vulnerable populations.
In his new role, Dr. Hayes will oversee dental services and programs for New Jersey residents. He will also be responsible for developing and overseeing an Oral Health Plan for the state.
Prior to joining the Department, Dr. Hayes served nearly seven years as the Lead Co-Director of the General Practice Residency Program at BronxCare Health System, the second largest GPR program in the U.S. The program has trained more than 800 new dentists in the areas of general and hospital dentistry, pediatric dentistry and orthodontics in the past 29 years.

The Department of Dentistry continues its focused effort to address the integral interrelationship between systemic health and oral health. Dr. Ingrid A. Dowrich, Chairman of Dentistry, has continued to promote the vision of the previous leadership and is striving to expand services in response to the growing dental needs of the Bronx community, with an emphasis on access to care and workforce diversity. The Departments efforts to facilitate an interprofessional approach to the overall health of its patient population are ongoing. Almost 100,000 visits are provided annually at six convenient locations across the Bronx.
Dental faculty and residents continue to participate in a five-year Health Resources and Services Administration grant focusing on the key role of good oral health in maintaining their patients overall health and wellness. Currently in Year Four, the project is being directed to interprofessional training. A unique component of this effort is the incorporation of Nutrition Education into the dental visit. Nutritional education and counselling are provided as part of an important initiative in conjunction with the James Beard award-winning chef, Amy Chaplin. This initiative includes an interface with the Garden of Eden community organization, the BronxCare Outpatient Network, and the dental department to reinforce concepts of oral health and nutrition.
