The new review joins other hospital rating systems, which can often score the same hospital differently.

For example, some of the top-ranked hospitals in the U.S. News and World Report received average or subpar ratings in other rankings released by the federal government and Leapfrog, a nonprofit hospital safety group.

While the differences are connected to the scoring measures used, experts say patients should try to be aware of the results in each respective system because they focus on a variety of important issues.

Nearly 50 hospitals across New York, for instance, had the lowest one-star rating in the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, or CMS, review, according to a USA TODAY Network analysis.

The U.S. News and World Report contended its ranking changes sought to focus its review on hard data that makes comparisons fair for hospitals and useful to the public.

This year we revised the methodology to incorporate new measures of patient-centered care and to enhance how we account for differences in hospitals patient populations, Harder said.

As a result, the review has changed what determines a top hospital, as only 165 hospitals out of more than 4,500 nationally were ranked in one specialty.

And 569 hospitals were ranked among the Best Regional Hospitals in a state or metro area based on their performance in delivering complex and common care, including the 34 in New York.

Some of the rankings resulted in tied scores for hospitals.

Thirty-four hospitals in New York ranked among the top performers in the country based on a new review of quality, safety and patient outcomes.

The rankings involved everything from risk-adjusted survival rates, staffing and other health care metrics, according to the U.S. News and World Report review.

The states top 10 hospitals were in New York City and Long Island, including New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan, which ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 5 nationally.

Other top hospitals based on the state-level rankings spanned a diverse mix of community hospitals and medical centers across the Finger Lakes, Hudson Valley and Southern Tier.

NEW YORK, NY Going to certain hospitals in New York City may do more harm than good, according to new batch of hospital safety rankings released Wednesday. Of the citys 41 hospitals graded by the Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit founded by employers and healthcare providers, 34 hospitals received a grade of C or below.

Yikes.

To paint an even uglier picture, zero of the citys hospitals received an A grade thats down from 2 hospitals that received an A in the Leapfrog Groups 2016 fall safety rankings. If you live by the Cs get degrees theory, the majority of the citys hospitals would still get passing grades but not by much. In total, seven hospitals got a grade of B, 23 got a grade of C, nine got a grade of D and two got a grade of F.

The hospitals that failed were SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn and Flushing Hospital Medical Center in Queens, according to the Leapfrog rankings.

Leapfrog looks at medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections when calculating its grades, according to the ranking methodology. The goal of the rankings is to determine a patients risk of further injury or infection is if they visit a certain hospital.

According to the organization, more than 1,000 Americans die each day from preventable hospital errors. Hospitals given a B rating by Leapfrog had a 9 percent higher risk of avoidable death than A hospitals. That number jumps to 35 percent in C hospitals.

• Nurses began returning to work at both hospitals Thursday morning, with Gov. Kathy Hochul greeting returning nurses at Mount Sinai just before dawn.

Thousands of nurses at two New York City hospitals ended a three-day strike Thursday after reaching a tentative contract agreement that union officials said offers better working conditions, in addition to pay raises.

The tentative deals at Mount Sinai Hospital, in Manhattan, and Montefiore Medical Center, in the Bronx, include raises totaling 19% over three years. Nurses began returning to work at both hospitals Thursday morning, with Gov. Kathy Hochul greeting returning nurses at Mount Sinai just before dawn.

The nurses, represented by the New York State Nurses Association, walked out early Monday after negotiations with management ran aground. Each hospital has over 1,000 beds and 3,500 or more union nurses.

The union stressed staffing levels as a key concern, saying that nurses who labored through the grueling peak of the coronavirus pandemic are stretched far too thin because too many jobs are open. Nurses say they have had to work overtime, handle twice as many patients as they should, and skip meals and even bathroom breaks.

The nurses strike that left four NYC hospitals scrambling for coverage after 7,000 nurses walked off the job has ended, the nurses union announced early Thursday morning.

The New York State Nurses Association confirmed that the strike ended in historic victory with tentative deals reached at both Mount Sinai Hospitals main campus in Manhattan and and three locations of Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx.

At about 2:30 a.m., we got a text message and it said we won, that we could get back to our patients on our shift and its over, nurse of 12 years Rada Kirchenko told The Post Thursday morning outside Mount Sinai where cops began to remove the barricades surrounding the area where she and her colleagues had picketed since Monday.

Kirchenko said the nearly three-day strike which caused a major staffing blow could have been avoided if hospital higher-ups previously heeded the nurses calls for better working conditions but unfortunately it had to get to this point.

We didnt want to leave our patients, she said. So now its happy time. Its a happy morning.

At Mt. Sinai, the tentative agreement includes an 8.5 percent raise for nurses in 2023, compared to their earnings in 2022, according to a copy obtained by The Post.

From there, they will receive another 7.7 percent increase in 2024 and a 7.8 percent increase in 2025, according to the document.

At Montefiore, the nurses won new safe staffing ratios in the Emergency Department, the union said.
