One thing that can be a pervasive problem while pursuing your dreams is keeping your mind on your ultimate goals while youre struggling to make a living. The need for comfort and security can derail even a great artistand wanting a nice car and clothing can really keep people from exploring their potential. So, if this is something that truly matters to your career, youll need to really prioritize, saving your extra money for classes and headshots instead of restaurants and vacations.

But youll also need to take care of yourself. Keep upbeat, positive music in your car or on your mobile device. When you feel a hard day coming on, combat this with a mandatory dance break or a happy sing-a-long. Surround yourself with supportive people who are on the same path or who understand your struggle. Take a walk and feel the sun on your face to get your head in the right place. Take a bath or read a book or do whatever you need to feel important and happy in this moment.

And above all, remember how lucky you are to be pursuing this dream. So many people out there dont have the chance or dont believe in themselves enough to even try. Just to be attempting your dream is a blessing.

Pick An Acting School With Great Industry Connections

A great acting school will have connections within the entertainment industry. You should look at who is enrolled in their programs because this can be a good indicator of quality. Many working actors will choose the school where they learn because, lets face it: we all want to work with the best.

Acting is about building relationships and connecting with people you need to know who has strong connections in this industry so that you have access to those opportunities once your training at acting school is over.

Start Putting Yourself Out There

There are plenty of websites dedicated to getting jobs as an actor, including Actors Access, LA Casting, and Now Casting, which all list big projects as well as student films and plays. Sign up for an account, then keep your profile updated with current pictures and any new credits as you book them.

Once youve done that, get yourself out there as much as possibleand dont be afraid to submit to every project you are right for, no matter how big or small. Small student films can help build your reel and widen your network. Big projects just might be looking for someone like youand you never know when you might be submitting to a casting director who just saw you in a workshop and wants to give you a shot. This truly happens all the time. It might not end up in a booking, but it could end up in a great audition. And making your mark in a big casting office is a milestone.

And go to every legitimate audition you get, no matter what. Many actors skip auditions because theyre afraid, deep down, that theyre not good enough at their art, but I encourage you to prove yourself wrong. Every auditioning experienceeven one gone terribly wrongis something you will learn from and can use to become a better actor. Show up scared and prepared, if you have to, but just show up. You will be miles ahead of a lot of actors who chicken out.

Take A Professional Headshot

Directors typically start auditions by asking for a headshot with your resume. Physical appearance is important for a visual industry like acting, where television and film are the primary mediums. If you have a friend who works as an amateur photographer, you can ask them to help you with this project to save money, but most professional headshot photographers should be able to work with you for a modest fee.

Interim Jobs For Actors

In all likelihood, you will not be able to support yourself as an actor right off the bat. You’ll want to find a job that pays decently and provides you with enough hours, while providing you scheduling flexibility to be able to audition. The go-to, of course, is waiting tables. Earning tips at a restaurant can be a great way to make a living and pay your bills while you focus on auditioning. Other options include tutoring – many SAT/ACT tutoring companies pay very well and allow you to create your own schedule. I also recommend fitness, for those of you who are inclined that way. Many dancers especially go this route because its a way to make money while staying physically fit and in shape – something that’s very important, especially in musical theatre.

In all of these cases, if you haven’t moved yet/are still in school, I recommend getting some experience prior to moving. Whether you’re in high school, college, or just living in a city outside New York, try to get a job waiting tables, teaching fitness classes, whatever sounds most appealing. Jobs in New York City are incredibly competitive, and you’ll be much better suited to get a great gig right off the bat if you have a decent resume, experience, and references. It’s not a necessity, but if you have the time before moving, it’s definitely worth exploring.

Pick A School With Actors As Teachers

Inside The Players Club, Actors Posh Hangout Since 1888 ...

The best acting schools will have actors as teachers. This means that they are employed by the school, and not just working part-time on their own projects. They must be passionate about teaching others how to act because this is what their main job consists of its not a side project or an extra cash flow for them.

Acting is all about expressing the right emotions in the moment. You cant trust someone who hasnt done it know how to teach you acting. Pick a school whose teachers know what it takes to work on set because they have experienced everything themselves.

Editors note: The school gets bonus points if your teachers are not only actors, but have other relevant experience such as directing, writing or production.

Acting For Fun Vs Acting Professionally

You might be loving your weekly improv class but that doesnt necessarily mean you should pursue it as a career. Acting is one of the toughest careers out there. Heres some fun stats:

6% of Equity members earn over £30,000 a year52% of Equity members earn less than £6,000 a year

These are figures from the UK, but its much the same in most western countries. More acting facts.

The reality is that an acting career for most trained, skilled actors is a game of intermittent work, mediocre successful and low income. Were not going to beat around the bush and we like to be straight up with what its like out there. Acting is a whole lot of fun and can be a rewarding, but its not always worth making the shift to a professional career.

Great. If this is your goal then you have to go after it. Heres a video where Jim Carrey talks about how you can fail at careers that seem safe, like accounting, so you may as well go after your passion. I think this is true. Its tough out there whatever path you take so you may as well follow your dream.

You can fail at the safe path so why not try and follow your dream
