How To Get Around New York City With A Baby

New York City and its traffic isnt a place where you want to hire a car, so the best option is to walk, take advantage of the public transport system or take taxis when you need to. Heres a run-down of the options for New York baby-friendly travel.

1. Taxis/Ubers

Taking a taxi, Uber or Lyft is one of the most convenient ways to get around the city. However, this does mean you have to think about car seats. Its legal to travel in a taxi in New York without one, but if youd prefer to use a car seat then youll have to either bring your own, or hire a taxi that has one.

Uber and Lyft both offer affordable cars with car seats, but theyre forward-facing and only suitable for babies over 12 months. And Black Lane and Kidmoto offer taxis with car seats, but they come with a large price tag. If you bring your own car seat, you can put it in most taxis/Ubers.

We brought our own car seat and used it in an Uber to and from the airport. You might also like to use a car seat on the aeroplane . If so, heres a handy guide to airline-approved car seats.

Some people say to avoid the subway with a baby, but we found it really useful. If youre using a baby carrier then going on the subway is as easy as it is without a baby just try to avoid rush hour, so you dont get crammed in with the crowds.

Should You Rent A Car In New York City

The idea of renting a car in New York might seem a little crazy. But with some foresight, and by arming yourself with knowledge about the city streets, driving a rental car in New York is possible. And the best part is that you can see parts of the city and the surrounding area that most visitors never will.

It is, however, important to note that a car rental might not be the best way for everyone to get around New York. If you are only in the city for one or two days and not planning on leaving Manhattan, it is perhaps better to walk or use public transit. But families or business travellers wanting to go to other boroughs or somewhere outside of New York Citys confines should consider renting a car from Sixt in Downtown New York. It also makes sense to rent a car if you are planning to visit other popular attractions such as the Niagara Falls.

Hudson Yards is one of Manhattans newest attractions and neighborhoods. Its a collection of high end stores and restaurants in a sparkling, brand new skyscraper.

The Vessel is the centerpiece of Hudson Yards and one of New York Citys newest and most dramatic landmarks. You can climb to the top for great views of the city and Hudson River.

In Hudson Yards, youll find The Edge Observation Deck, currently the highest outdoor sky deck in the Western Hemisphere. The elevator ride to the outside deck alone is worth the price of admission. The High Line is actually a city park built on an abandoned elevated train track. It starts at about 34th Street at Hudson Yards, although it is being further extended north, and ends at Grosvenor Street in the Meatpacking District. The railroad tracks were going to be demolished but someone had the bright idea of turning it into a floating park, a crazy idea in a city of crazy ideas that worked. Today, this 2 mile stretch of city park winds through tenements, luxury buildings, gardens, art exhibits and coffee shops the only structure of its kind in the world.

Lower Manhattan might not be the first place you think of when considering where to stay in New York City. However, it is filled with tourist attractions and access to unmissable landmarks.

Also, the financial district area is booming with tourists after new shops and hotels have been developed in recent years around the 9/11, One World Trade Center and Oculus area.

No, that doesnt mean you should stay in Lower Manhattan because yes, you could just visit and then take a subway back to another area.

But anyone hunting the best NYC photography locations should consider this area because it is right next to Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty and One World Observatory.

And another huge bonus in this area?

Many hotels here offer discounted rates at weekends when business trippers vacate hotel rooms otherwise occupied at inflated rates during the week.
