New Yorks Shadow Transit

Text and map by Aaron Reiss Videos by Nate Lavey and Aaron Reiss

New Yorks unofficial shuttles, called dollar vans in some neighborhoods, make up a thriving transportation system that operates where the subway and buses dont. This interactive project, with videos, maps out that system.

In 1980, when a transit strike halted buses and subway trains throughout New Yorks five boroughs, residents in some of the most marooned parts of the city started using their own cars and vans to pick people up, charging a dollar to shuttle them to their destinations. Eleven days later, the strike ended, but the cars and vans drove on, finding huge demand in neighborhoods that werent well served by public transit even when buses and trains were running. The drivers eventually expanded their businesses, using thirteen-seat vans to create routes in places like Flatbush, Jamaica, Far Rockaway, and downtown Brooklyn.

For the past year, I have been researching, riding, and mapping the citys dollar vans. Dollar-van lines, by their nature, change slightly from day to day owing to the needs of passengers, road maintenance, or the caprice of drivers, but this map represents the major lines and connections that define New York Citys shadow transportation system.

City Bus As A Tour Ride

I know I saw a post last week, but can’t remember the topic title. It was a trip report from someone who took a city bus and went from downtown Manhattan up into Harlem and beyond. It gave a lot of details about what sights and neighborhoods you would pass. I’m thinking of doing something similar next time I’m in the city. Can anyone point me to the report?

I love riding the buses. I think the best place to sit is right past the rear doors, most buses go up a couple of steps – sit right there in the first row and you have a great view both towards the front and out the sides .

I think there are more interesting views on Fifth Avenue than on Madison but Fifth Avenue is one way downtown.

Thanks, jane235, that’s exactly what I was looking for. Can’t wait to try it…and the return trip down Fifth Ave.
