Enjoying The Amtrak Food In The Dining Car

Speaking of the dining car thats one of the most important questions, right?! How was the food on the Amtrak train from New York to New Orleans?

It was actually pretty good. I had low expectations, because I figured preparing decent food in a tiny, rocking train kitchen must be a nearly impossible task. But all my meals were tasty and well presented. And compared with plane food, the Amtrak wins every time. Wine that doesnt taste weird, real plates and cutlery, and food that wasnt microwaved in a tin foil box its basically heaven! And you cant beat the views as you dine.

Philadelphia Is Inundated By Floodwaters As Ida Leaves A Trail Of Destruction In The Mid

PHILADELPHIA As Thursday morning began, Ron Harper, 87, was in his apartment 14 floors above a steadily flooding Philadelphia and wondered when he would ever leave.

I feel so bad for the people who lost property, he said.

Those people were all over the region on Thursday, as residents of Mid-Atlantic States awoke to a trail of destruction left behind by remnants of Ida, which struck Louisiana as a Category 4 hurricane days before. Tornadoes had touched down in Maryland and in the Philadelphia suburbs, while rain-swollen rivers had flooded small towns and were still rising.

Officials in Pennsylvania said emergency responders had conducted thousands of water rescues, pulling people out of apartment buildings and cars.

Tens of thousands of people were without power in the Philadelphia area, where a portion of the Vine Street Expressway that runs through the center of the city was submerged.

Al Gore gave us a wake-up call 20 years ago and no one paid attention, said Frank Feingold, 76, a retired probation officer and one of about a dozen people taking photos of the flooded interstate where muddy water was lapping the road signs.

The Schuylkill had reached the major flood stage designation overnight, leaving cars across the city nearly completely underwater.

It was coming so hard that the basement filled up, and it was coming through the heating and air-conditioning vents, he said. It came halfway up the windows.

CJ Gardner-Johnson on Week 4 “Get Ready” | New Orleans Saints

The last time Peggy Gamberella, 63, heard from her younger sister, she said she had no drinking water or electricity and had lost everything in Hurricane Ida.

The sister, Patricia Killingsworth of Chauvin, La., has a chronic lung disease and has trouble breathing when its hot. She relies on a machine to help her breathe, but that device needs to be plugged in. After Ida knocked out her power, Ms. Killingsworth was able to use someones generator, her family said.

I dont see no help in sight for days, Mr. Killingsworth, 61, wrote in a text message before pleading, Send help if you can.

That was on Monday evening the family hasnt heard from her since.

Ms. Gamberella said the family had been scrambling for two days to find help, but she lives more than 200 miles away, in Laurel, Miss.

I just pray she is OK, Ms. Gamberella said.

Roads are still blocked in some southern Louisiana communities throughout Terrebonne Parish because of downed trees and power lines, making access and rescue efforts difficult, according to Lauren Smith, volunteer coordinator and spokeswoman for the Cajun Navy Ground Force, a community-led disaster-response organization.

She said that while response teams work to clear the roads, finding fuel to power generators, chain saws, equipment and vehicles is one of the biggest challenges.

We had to basically take all the fuel that was running generators for our camp and take it over and fill up her generator, she said.

How I Rolled On The Crescent: New York To New Orleans By Rail

New Orleans streetcar itinerary to help you get around ...
  • Read in app

Everyone I told said the same thing: Oh, my God! Ive always wanted to do that!

The thing they had always wanted to do, apparently, was travel from New York to New Orleans by train. Or cross any considerable distance by rail distances typically flown over in the name of expedience. Old, young, man, woman, didnt matter. They had all long nursed, but never acted on, a wish to take the slow route.

I write about liquor. Every July, in New Orleans, there is a booze convention. Id gone every year, always by plane. Last summer, bored with the routine, I vowed to shake it up. I brought up the Amtrak website and discovered there was a line called the Crescent that followed the eastern corridor down to Washington, D.C., and then snaked through the South to New Orleans. It took 30 hours.

I had a day to spare. All that remained was to O.K. the plan with my travel companion. Oh, my God! she said. Ive always wanted to do that!

Despite our shared enthusiasm, part of me wondered if the trip was a good idea. Amtrak was regularly in the news, and not in a good way. A derailment here, a delay there. Penn Stations summer from hell was tabloid fodder. Had I booked myself a fantasy that bore no correlation to reality ?

A porter directed us to our car. We boarded and were immediately funneled into those narrow hallways that remind you of old movies.

New Orleans Vs Chicago Vs New York

New to New Orleans? How do you say….

My three top cities in the U.S. I usually rank Chicago as my favorite and it still is, while New Orleans is next and New York 3rd of the three, but all 3 are fairly close based on food/drinking and things to do. I like Chicago’s Food the best and it’s downtown as well as it’s Sports team and drinking areas. I like the activities in New York but also like the food and how much you can do. I like the drinking and food in New Orleans. Pretty much went to all three this year. I have lived in Chicago 20+ years, NYC 5+ years and never in New Orleans, but it is fairly close to where I live now in Houston.

Simply question for you, what would make you choose one over the other?

Let’s say you aren’t going for museums.

I’d recommend a visit to any of the three. They’re different places, so it’s not like one is best or better. I’ve enjoyed multiple trips to each.

Of course asking this question on the New Orleans forum is stacking the deck just a bit.

Chicago isn’t enjoyable in January.

Chicago is a great place to live – with the only real negative for me being our winter weather. I’ve lived here all my life.

I’ve visited New York a number of times both for business and for leisure. I’ve always felt it’s a “great place to visit, but not to live”. When my husband worked for United years ago, we’d take frequent day trips there. Chicago is a much cleaner city – and the people are friendlier. New York, however, has Broadway – which can’t be beat.
