Best Hotels In Thousand Islands
You’ll find the most lodging options in Alexandria Bay, which is also where you’ll find the most people. If you stay in charming little Sackets Harbor , there are some good restaurants and bars all within walking distance. And, don’t forget the Canadian side: The Frontenac Club Inn, 225 King St. East, Kingston, Ontario , is an excellent choice.
Unfortunately, all the old grand hotels patronized by the Vanderbilts and their like at the turn of the 20th century — such as the 300-room grande dame, the Frontenac Hotel — were claimed by fire, so you won’t find any classics like the Adirondacks’ Sagamore. The historic properties were replaced by motels and two-story resorts, which have the benefit of being on the water, but generally promise little else. Fortunately, there are a couple of exceptions. Few spots are open year-round, and many hotels require a 2-night minimum stay on summer weekends.
For chain options, stay near Watertown, where you’ll find a Microtel, 8000 Virginia Smith Dr. , and a Holiday Inn Express, 1290 Arsenal St. . Farther north in Ogdensburg, there’s a Quality Inn, 6765 State Hwy. 37 .

What To Do In The Thousand Islands
There are no shortage of opportunities to get outdoors and get moving in New York states Thousand Islands. Want to canoe, kayak, paddle board, or mountain bike? Yep, thats here. Some of the Thousand Islands are just barely big enough for a shed to fit on them others are large enough for several houses. Some of the houses on the islands are summer homes, but many are year-round residences. The only way to get to many of the islands is via boat.
A great way to see many of the islands is via boat tour. Cruising among the Thousand Islands on a boat is one of the most popular activities visitors enjoy. The tours cruise past dozens of islands, fairytale castles, lighthouses, and wildlife, along with a bit of history. You can find tours from both the American and Canadian sides of the Saint Lawrence. There are also tours that combine seeing the various islands with a visit to Boldt Castle.

Thousand Islands National Park is one of the oldest national parks in Canada and is made up of 21 different islands in the Saint Lawrence River and three mainland properties on the 1000 Islands Parkway.

Other Boating Fishing And Vacationing Locations
- Boldt Castle, a testament of one man’s love of his wife, has been under renovation by its owner, the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority since 1977, and can be visited by boat or tour cruise. This 120-room mansion is on Heart Island just across the shipping channel from Alexandria Bay. The grounds consist of the main castle, the power house, the play house, and a boat house tucked in across the bay on the inside of the island.
- Though not as famous as George Boldt’s Castle, Singer Castle on Dark Island is privately renovated and is open to tourists. Frederick Bourne had his castle constructed with secret passageways and hidden wine cellars so he could spy on his guests while keeping his liquor out of sight during the prohibition era.
- The Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, New York houses antique wooden boats used or built in the region. The museum also features exhibits on the region’s maritime culture and is home to La Duchesse, George Boldt’s luxury houseboat.
- Thousand Islands Boat Museum in Gananoque, Ontario is a young, hands-on waterfront museum celebrating the heritage of the St. Lawrence River. Workshops, events and a collection of 36 boats are on offer.
- The Thousand Islands also facilitates freshwater shipwreck diving. Numerous wrecks lay at the bottom of the seaway including America, Islander, and Keystorm. There are wrecks that are appropriate for all diving skill levels.
