Best Hotels In Thousand Islands
You’ll find the most lodging options in Alexandria Bay, which is also where you’ll find the most people. If you stay in charming little Sackets Harbor , there are some good restaurants and bars all within walking distance. And, don’t forget the Canadian side: The Frontenac Club Inn, 225 King St. East, Kingston, Ontario , is an excellent choice.
Unfortunately, all the old grand hotels patronized by the Vanderbilts and their like at the turn of the 20th century — such as the 300-room grande dame, the Frontenac Hotel — were claimed by fire, so you won’t find any classics like the Adirondacks’ Sagamore. The historic properties were replaced by motels and two-story resorts, which have the benefit of being on the water, but generally promise little else. Fortunately, there are a couple of exceptions. Few spots are open year-round, and many hotels require a 2-night minimum stay on summer weekends.
For chain options, stay near Watertown, where you’ll find a Microtel, 8000 Virginia Smith Dr. , and a Holiday Inn Express, 1290 Arsenal St. . Farther north in Ogdensburg, there’s a Quality Inn, 6765 State Hwy. 37 .

See All The Tiny Islands Via Boat
Some of the Thousand Islands are just barely big enough for a shed to fit on them others are large enough for several houses. Some of the houses on the islands are summer homes, but many are year-round residences. The only way to get to many of the islands is via boat.
A great way to see many of the islands is via boat tour. Cruising among the Thousand Islands on a boat is one of the most popular activities visitors enjoy. The tours cruise past dozens of islands, fairytale castles, lighthouses, and wildlife, along with a bit of history. You can find tours from both the American and Canadian sides of the Saint Lawrence. There are also tours that combine seeing the various islands with a visit to Boldt Castle.
The cost of the tours depends on length and what is included. Some tours include lunch or dinner.

Eat The Famous Salad Dressing
As you might have guessed, the eponymous salad dressing was reportedly born in the Thousand Islands. Legend has it that the original recipe a kitchen sink combo of ketchup, mayonnaise, and chopped onion came from fishermen, who blended ingredients haphazardly from their lunch boxes. Later, George Boldt , brought it to the attention of diners at his Manhattan hotel, the Waldorf-Astoria, and a much-loved condiment was born.
