The Plaza’s website claims Trump paid $390 million for the location, but regardless of what Trump paid for the hotel, he didn’t keep ownership.
Trump’s time as owner of the Plaza Hotel wasn’t very long, but apparently, he made some major changes to the historical location during his leadership. Most of those changes had to do with interior design decisions, while Trump aimed to let the Plaza’s charm and history shine through.
“To modernize the hotel, new, inviting chandeliers were installed, an empty and old restaurant was replaced by a Japanese restaurant and bar, magnificent onyx was installed in every bathroom, and a large fitness center was created,” Trump’s website explains his time as owner.
“Yet to further highlight the grace and glamour of the past, the newer wall-to-wall carpeting of the lobby was removed, exposing the beautiful mosaics from the original design, and the ballrooms were restored to their previous grandeur.”
And Trump felt the special nature of the location. “This isn’t just a building, it’s the ultimate work of art. I was in love with it,” he exclaimed in the portfolio.

The Plaza Hotel is a beautiful 19-story luxury hotel located on the most exclusive street in New York City, Central Park South. The hotel was designed by Henry Janeway Hardenberg and opened to the public on October 1, 1907, originally costing $12.5 million to build. When it opened, a room at the Plaza Hotel was only $2.50. Today, the same room costs $3,750. The Plaza was accorded landmark status by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1988 and is, with the Waldorf-Astoria, the only New York City hotel to be designated as a National Historic Landmark.

The most filmed building in New York City, the hotel is often used as a setting in books, TV shows and movies. Although it had appeared briefly in earlier films, The Plaza made its major movie debut in the 1959 film North by Northwest. The Plaza in Plaza Hotel stands for the Grand Army Plaza, right on the southeasternmost corner of Central Park. For the small square that it is, it is the site of a few interesting memorials. Most recognizable is the golden statue of William Tecumseh Sherman, the harsh, unforgiving Civil War general whose methodical destruction of the land his army passed over helped win the North a decisive victory. His horse is led by the personification of Victory. The statue is gilded in real 23 karat gold.Also at the Plaza is the Pulitzer Fountain, contributed by publisher Joseph Pulitzer for the designs laid out by sculptor Karl Bitter, who proposed a Beaux-Arts style square in 1898. Atop the fountain is Pomona, a Roman Goddess of fruitful abundance. The site was named the Grand Army Plaza after the Grand Army of the Potomac in the Civil War.
Hurricane Sandy And Recent History
In October 2012, the building was heavily damaged by Hurricane Sandy when an estimated 28 million US gallons of water flooded the lower levels of the building. The retail concourse was submerged and needed to be completely gut-renovated. Office tenants were allowed to return starting November 17, 2012, and the retail concourse reopened in the winter of 2014.
In March 2014, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners moved their headquarters to a 19,218 square feet space on the building’s 42nd floor. Around the same time, Revlon moved into 91,164 square feet on the top two floors of the building that had previously served as Goldman Sachs’ trading floors. The same year, architectural design firm Davis Brody Bond also moved into 26,354 square feet on the 42nd floor, the National Futures Association took 36,000 square feet on the 43rd floor, and WellCare signed a lease for 68,323 square feet .Macmillan Publishers signed the largest deal of the year at the building, taking 176,121 square feet across the 45th through 48th floors for their Science and Education division. After the flurry of deals, the building ended the year 99% occupied.
The building’s retail concourse reopened in the winter of 2015 after a three year, $14 million redesign. New tenants in the space included Starbucks, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Chopt, and Gateway Newstands.

Redeveloped Hotel In The Early 20th Century
The first Plaza Hotel had been relatively remote when it was completed, but by the first decade of the 20th century was part of a rapidly growing commercial district on Fifth Avenue. Furthermore, several upscale hotels in Manhattan were also being rebuilt during that time. In May 1902, a syndicate purchased the Plaza and three adjacent lots on Central Park South for $3 million. The sale was the largest-ever cash-only purchase for a Manhattan property at the time. The purchasers were headed by Harry S. Blackwho headed the George A. Fuller Company, one of the syndicate’s membersas well as German financier Bernhard Beinecke. Shortly after the purchase, Black and Beinecke formed the Plaza Realty Company to redevelop the hotel. In mid-1905, Black also formed the United States Realty and Construction Company, a trust whose subsidiaries included the Fuller Company and the Plaza Realty Company. To acquire sufficient funding for the redevelopment, Black and Beinecke approached barbed-wire entrepreneur John Warne Gates, who agreed to fund the project on the condition that Frederic Sterry be named the managing director of the hotel.

New York City is getting back to business again, starting with some of its best hotels.
According to Time Out New York, the iconic Plaza Hotel in New York City is officially reopening after a 14 month closure due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The official reopening date is set for May 20.
The Plaza noted in an official statement, “For the past year you’ve been asked to stay home, The Plaza is now extending its formal invitation to return to New York.” The announcement is perhaps not all that coincidental, since the city seems to be ramping up towards a full reopening later in the summer, according to an announcement by Mayor Bill deBlasio.
And if you’re looking for some more iconic New York City experiences, the famous Tavern on the Green restaurant officially reopened on Thursday, April 29.
Openings for the Plaza Food Hall, Todd English Food Hall, Champagne Bar, and the Rose Club are still not announced.

Palm Court at The Plaza Hotel in New York for Afternoon Tea
The Plaza Hotel in New York City is a landmark and a Beaux-arts masterpiece, built in 1907 and occupying a prime piece of New York City real estate near the fabled corner of Fifth Avenue and Central Park South. While it normally offers a superb and elegant afternoon tea in its dramatic Palm Court with stained glass ceiling, that room is temporarily closed for refurbishment. Update: The Palm Court is now open, for updated pictures. Afternoon Tea is now being offered in The Champagne Bar, but it is not the featured event that one would expect to find in the Palm Court.
That being said, I still couldnt resist visiting this grande dame of all New York hotels to sample their afternoon tea service . On the Champagne Rooms menu are caviar, oysters, cocktails, light food, afternoon tea and, of course, champagne. It is an elegant two-story space that is carved out of the Hotels main lobby area and has Fifth Avenue views overlooking the Pulitzer Fountain. Seating options are varied and include free standing tables and chairs, sofas, and high-backed upholstered chairs arranged two by two near the windows.

I chose the afternoon tea and while the available teas are not extensive , I selected The Plaza Afternoon Tea Signature Blend. The tea is brought to your table in a Bernardaud china teapot, already brewed.
