That Which We Call Soho

What’s in a name?

First there was SoHo , and then came Tribeca , Nolita , NoHo , DUMBO , and the really awful SoHa . And I’m sure there are many more. But who started it all by coining the name SoHo?

In 1962, Chester Rapkin, the New York City Commissioner of Planning and urban planning theorist, published a report titled “The South Houston Industrial Area” . His 2001 obituary credits him with coming up with the name SoHo. But I think a few other people have also been credited with the coinage

The area that is now SoHo was also once known as the Valley, because it is comprised of many low, five-story buildings with areas of tall skyscrapers to the south and north. It was also known as Hell’s Hundred Acres, a name given to the neighborhood by the fire department after several huge warehouse fires. The Landmarks Preservation Commission called it the SoHo-Cast Iron Historic District when it designated the area an official historic district in 1973. SoHo in New York is distinguished from Soho, the area in London, by the capital letter “H,” indicating that it is a contraction of the words “South” and “Houston.”

That which we call SoHo is thus a reminder of where we came from as well as, for better or worse, a reminder of just how far we’ve come.

Archives Personal Files & Ephemera

The SoHo-Cast Iron Historic District is a section of lower Manhattan bounded by Broadway, West Broadway, Canal Street, Howard Street, Crosby Street, East Houston Street, and West Houston Street. The district comprises about 500 buildings, many of which are characterized by their cast-iron facades.1 Development of the district began in the late 18th century as a few businesses and wealthy residents moved in. The population surged after the War of 1812, and some homes from this era still remain. The latter half of the 19th century saw the district evolve into a center of commerce and entertainment, and the majority of the cast-iron buildings the district is known for were constructed during this period. The use of cast-iron allowed for ornate facades that were a much cheaper alternative to granite and marble. However, an increase of industrial production along with rising crime and immorality steadily drove residents out of the area.2

In 1973, SoHo was designated an historic district by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, with an extension to the district approved by the Commission in 2010.

1959: The Artists Tenant Association is formed

1965: The first attempt to designate the SoHo district as an area of architectural importance is made

1968: The SoHo Artists Association is formed

1969: The Lower Manhattan Expressway plans are halted permanently

1973: The SoHo-Cast Iron Historic District is designated by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission

The buildings they worked in stood empty.

Artists began illegally moving into the vacant SoHo lofts in the 1960s because they were inexpensive at the time and full of natural light perfect for creating. In 1971, the city legalized artists’ use of the lofts if they could prove they were using the space, according to Politico.
