Where Can I Park My Car In New York City

Tips For Scoring Discounts On Nyc Monthly Parking

An empty parking lot, in NYC

Before you get started, heres some background information if youre looking to save money.

1. Be flexible about location to save up to $300 Some areas of Manhattan are considerably more expensive formonthly parking than others. The areas shaded in red on the map to the right will likely be over $400.

Consider looking in a 5-block radius of your ideal location for the best luck at getting a lower rate. And avoid 5th Avenue at all costs!

If you dont need your car that often, these outer boroughs tend to have cheaper monthly parking options.

  • 2. Dont pay for more access than you need If you dont use your car every day, dont pay for a monthly parking spot with unlimited in and out access. There are usually different rates for different access levels. Ask your parking provider about discounts for infrequent use. We recommend negotiating here.

    3. Ask about timing discounts If your parking needs are the opposite of most people in the area, you might be able to get a discount from the garage.

For example, if you live in Midtown, where many people drive to work, but you only need parking during nights and weekends, you might be able to get a cheaper monthly rate. It never hurts to ask!

Sleeping In Your Car In Parking Lots

As there is no law against sleeping in your car, you are not inherently breaking the law by sleeping in your car in a parking lot.

However, the reality of the situation is a little more complicated than that.

If the owner of the parking lotbe it a small business or a global franchisehas decided to specifically prohibit sleeping in your car on their property, then they are entirely within their rights to ask you to leave.

The instant you are asked to leave private property, you become a trespasser on that land, and thatis breaking the law. Refusing to go at this point could land you inside a courtroom, so its most definitely best to move on without starting any trouble.

If you find a parking lot that does not have any signs expressly prohibiting sleeping in your vehicleand you could also check the companies website if you want to be extra thoroughthen you should be safe in theory.

However, it could be that the owner does not want any urban camping on their land, and it has just never occurred to them to put up a sign. In that case, they may still ask you to leave, and you would still be legally obligated to comply.

For this reason, you should be as stealthy as possible when sleeping in your vehicle in NYC. Unless you have the express permission of the property owner whose land you are parked on, just assume that you will be asked to leave if you are found out.

Check For Designated Manhattan Free Parking

To the relief of New Yorkers everywhere, in 2005 the NYC Department of Transportation lifted the ordinance that parking meters needed to be paid on Sunday. That means you can park at all metered spots for free on Sundays.

That said, just because parking is free doesnt mean youll be guaranteed a spot. If you can, try to arrive at your destination early to find a spot, especially if youre attending an event like a concert.

In addition to free parking on Sundays, NYC also has designated areas where you can park for free during specific hours of the day. Look for signs near your destination specifying the regulations, and make sure you follow them to avoid a ticket.

You can get a parking ticket whether youre sitting in or next to your car. Being in your vehicle isnt relevant to the legality of parking. Not many people get parking tickets while theyre in their car. However, you should be conscious of where you stop your vehicle while answering a quick phone call or text on the way to your destination.Read more about this issue in this Quora conversation.

Parking Outside Of New York City

This Friday I’m driving down to NYC with my girlfriend and I’m wondering where’s the best place to park just outside of NYC.

I don’t want to drive into the city and I would prefer parking just outside of the city and taking transit in. I’ll only be there for the day.

What are the best places to park outside of NYC and the best routes to get into the city?

I would just drive the whole way to NYC. IMO we have places in NJ that are worse to drive into than NYC

    Edited: 11 years ago

I agree with AERULES, it’s easier to just drive in and park. You can use to find a less expensive location near where you want to be.

To answer your question, I recommend the park-and-ride lot alongside the Secaucus Junction train station where you’d board a train that will take you directly to Penn Station in Manhattan — on W. 34th Street, across from the flagship Macy’s store — at cost of $5.75/per person round-trip for off-peak travel.

That park-and-ride lot is easy to find/get to because it has its own exit — 15X — off the New Jersey Turnpike the lot is gated, well-lit, and attended $10-12 for weekday parking. What Does Alternate Side Parking Mean

In NYC, they have this nifty thing called alternate side parking. Basically, it means that cars are only allowed to park on one side of the street at certain times, in order to create a smoother flow of traffic and space for the street cleaners. Across the five boroughs, alternate side parking rules are generally in effect once or twice a week, and during those times, sides of the street are blocked off around two or three hours. Alternate side parking rules do not apply to religious and legal holidays or during weather emergencies.

Downtown and Lower Manhattan is very popular for both business and leisure visitors, as its just steps away from Wall Street, but also home to desirable attractions such as the 9/11 Memorial. However, this means there are lots of crowds in Downtown New York City and Lower Manhattan, and that includes the streets. Street parking is limited and there are lots of restrictions regarding street parking. A good rule of thumb to remember is that the further away from the center of the district that you travel, the more parking youll find. Meters charge $3.50 per hour Monday through Saturday. Unmetered street parking is free. Garage parking is much more readily available, with day rates starting around $20.

    Parking Parking And More Parking

Street parking: Unless you live in Staten Island or alongside a cemetery , finding quick and easy street parking will become something of an obsession. Its even more tricky since outdoor dining took away thousands of spots. Brick took a look at the best neighborhoods in Manhattan,Brooklyn,Queens, and the Bronx for on street parking so you can get a sense of much time youll spend circling the block when you get home. Essentially the denser the neighborhood the fewer the spots for on-street parking.

Garages: The biggest hurdle to owning a car in New York City versus other areas is the prohibitively high cost of garage parking. If you’re looking to buy an apartment that comes with its own spot, the average price for a single parking space in recent years has been about $280,000, according to the New York Times. One buyer says he bought a $1.175 million apartment and paid cash for the $125,000 parking spot. Renting a spot in buildings with garages can run from $150 to $500 depending on the neighborhood. However at new developments in the outer boroughs, you can find buildings that waive parking fees as a concession to lure renters.

The average cost of monthly parking in a commercial garage in Manhattan is $570, and in Brooklyn is $280, according to a quick survey of parking rates.

Owning a car in New York City is seen as a liability by many, especially when a quick Uber ride or the swipe of a MetroCard can easily get you where you need to go.

Car owners know that circling the block for a spot and moving the car for alternate side parking is just a part of life, unless theyre willing to pay for a parking space. But for some New Yorkers, an unused space in a parking garage or an extra spot in the driveway is a valuable piece of real estate and an easy way to earn extra income.

Jee Choe became the reluctant owner of a parking space about 16 years ago when she bought an alcove studio in Greenwich Village.

I wanted to find out if I could buy the apartment without the spot, said Ms. Choe, a tea sommelier and author of the tea blog Oh, How Civilized. I never intend on having a car in New York so why would I need a parking spot? I didnt want another thing to be responsible for because buying the apartment was already a big deal.

At the same time, the development boom in recent years has absorbed a lot of the parking lots that used to be found on city streets. Still, Mr. Miller said, despite the drop in parking supply, I dont believe we can declare a parking shortage.
