Wcs’s Run For The Wild

In April 2008, the zoo hosted the first Run for the Wild event. The event is a 5k run long) organized by the Wildlife Conservation Society with the goal of raising money and awareness for their conservation programs of endangered species. Each year, there is a set entry fee for participants with varying prices depending on age child , adult, and senior . WCS Members get a discounted fee. Along with the entry fee, there is a $35 minimum donation per adult/senior participant. The event offers free prizes for donors, based on donation size, ranging from a Run for the Wild T-shirt to a special animal experience at the zoo. All donations are tax-deductible. All participants are also offered free all-day entry to the zoo and its paid exhibits/attractions. The yearly event takes place at the end of April and originally began at 8 am for those wishing to actually run, and 8:45 for those who wish to simply walk or jog the start times were changed to 7 am and 7:45 am in later years.

In 2011, another WCS institute, the New York Aquarium, held its own Run for the Wild event for sea turtles in early October. The 5k run began at the aquarium and led down the Riegelmann Boardwalk on Coney Island. The aquarium held a second run the following year for walruses. The event has not returned to the aquarium since.

How Much Do Tickets To The Bronx Zoo Cost

From 20 Euros you can get an adult Limited Admission ticket to visit the Bronx Zoo but unlike the “Bronx Zoo Admission” ticket, this does not provide all inclusive and unlimited access to all the attractions available on the day of the visit but only the entrance to the park.

Individual tickets to each attraction are available from about 5 Euros but it does not pay off. If you don’t want to miss out on any of the fun, my advice is to buy the Bronx Zoo Admission ticket for a little more money, starting at 25 Euros for adults. This type of ticket does give unlimited access to popular permanent exhibits like Jungle World or Congo Gorilla Forest and temporary ones like Butterfly Garden or Wild Asia Monorail.

Whichever type of ticket you choose you will have to buy them online and in advance, as you will not be able to enter the zoo if you do not take this step. At the time of purchase you will have to choose a date and time of access to the park.

Congo Gorilla Forest This replica of an African mountain rain forest has provided the primates with a setting almost indistinguishable from their native area. The 6.5 acre re-creation has treetop lookouts, lush greenery, and hundreds of animals. There are black and white Colobus monkeys, red-river hogs, and two troops of lowland gorillas over 50,000 square feet. The shady forest dotted with bamboo thickets and sunny meadows houses 400 species of plant in addition to the many animals. The exhibit trail is nearly 1/3 mile long and home to the first gorilla born in New York City. Open year-round.

If you want, you can also turn it into a full-day outing because Bronx Zoo entry tickets dont have a time limit.

Bronx Zoo Free Admission On Wednesdays

One of the best “things to do” in NYC is visiting the Bronx Zoo. The Zoo is located within a large wood on the side of Bronx River. Most animals move around freely, although not all animals were available because of the cold weather in March. In addition to watching animals in their natural habitat, visitors can witness feeding some kinds of animals in pre-scheduled times. On Wednesday, General Admission to the Zoo is free.

We went on a Wednesday which is donation day. However, they also offer a winter experience for $10 that allows access to special exhibits. I am glad we did the $10 because there would not be much to see otherwise. Some of the exhibits were closed due to weather or renovation. We were able to see giraffes, lions, and tigers but they were not very active because of the weather…even though it was 64 degrees. It is an older zoo that needs updates. I would not pay full price for this zoo…it is worth visiting on a Wednesday if you must go to the zoo.
