How The Campaign Shaped Up During The Pandemic
The primary’s early months were dominated by Zoom forums.
Nonprofit organizations, unions, and other local groups held discussions that were less debates than opportunities for the candidates to repeat their campaign promises and sharpen their messaging.
Another factor making this campaign rather unusual was the general lack of public polling, with several pollsters saying they were uncomfortable simulating ranked-choice voting with any accuracy.
Yang started the race as the frontrunner, but as more polling became available in the final weeks, he began to slip into second, third, and even fourth place in some surveys.
However, Yang remained competitive throughout, and an Ipsos poll released on the eve of the primary showed him in second place behind Adams.
Adams cleaned up with labor endorsements around the city, while Yang received a first of its kind joint-endorsement from Hasidic and Orthodox Jewish community leaders. The borough president’s momentum was complicated by a scandal involving his primary residence, when a Politico investigation found Adams may have been living in either New Jersey or his office instead of a Bedford-Stuyvesant brownstone that he officially listed.
Garcia began to surge following her New York Times Editorial Board endorsement, and Wiley was able to capitalize on late support from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Outside of the top four, several progressive candidates failed to gain traction, most notably City Comptroller Scott Stringer.

NEW YORK — New Yorkers need to register to vote by Friday in order to cast their ballots in the June primary elections.
The primaries include the races for U.S. Senate, governor, lieutenant governor and state assembly.
Early voting for the elections begins June 18 and Election Day is June 28.

What Is A General Election

What If I Requested An Absentee Ballot And Decide To Vote At The Polls
You can, but you will be given an affidavit ballot instead of being able to use a polling machine so the Board of Elections can first determine if you are an eligible voter. A law change this year adopted the rule for New York State after chaotic ballot counting in a 2020 upstate congressional race delayed the race being called for months.
Due to a recent change in law, New York State voters are no longer permitted to cast a ballot on a voting machine if they have requested to vote by Absentee Ballot. Voters who have requested to vote by Absentee Ballot can still vote in-person using an affidavit ballot.

Does Zeldin Hold On

All signs point to Zeldin as the frontrunner in the Republican race.
It was apparent in the debates as he was the main subject of attacks by the other candidates after he easily won party leaders endorsements earlier this year.
But there are reasons to think its far too soon to declare Zeldins victory an absolute lock.
Most of the limited polling data available to the public shows him with a lead, but some indicate that Giuliani is well-positioned thanks in part to his universally-recognizable last name. Zeldin has already spent more than nearly any other Republican candidate for any office in New York in the past two decades, but not quite as much in the homestretch as Wilson, who has self funded most of his campaign.
But heres some recent history worth noting: The only Republican gubernatorial primary in the past 25 years featured another former Suffolk County congressman who was backed by party leaders yet lost in a stunner. That year, Buffalo developer Carl Paladino, running as an outsider and conservative, beat former Rep. Rick Lazio.

What Happens If Im Turned Away On Election Day
There are a number of reasons you could arrive at your polling place on Election Day and be told you canât vote.
First, double-check youâre at the right polling place by visiting . If you are and are still being turned away, it is possible you may not have registered in time or, if you recently moved, you havenât changed your registration to your current address.
Ask poll workers to check if you are registered to vote in another borough. If your poll workers are not being helpful, contact or visit your local elections office, which can be found here.
It is also possible you have been marked an inactive voter, in error by the Board of Elections or because you have not voted in two consecutive federal elections over the course of five years.
If you are still being told you are not on the voter rolls, you can request an affidavit ballot from a poll worker. Filling out this ballot will allow you to attest you are eligible to vote and participate in the primary. The cityâs Board of Elections will then verify whether you are eligible or not. If you are, your vote will be counted. If not, they will contact you with a notice you are not eligible and paperwork for you to register for future elections.

Which Party Is More Enthused

Theres one prediction that can be made for Tuesdays races in New York: Turnout will be lackluster.
Participation in primaries is low in even the best of circumstances in the state. And this year hardly presents the best circumstances. Most notably, problems with redistricting led the courts to split the primaries into two, meaning that races for Congress and the state Senate will be Aug. 23.
Its going to be low, Zeldin said Monday of turnout. Theres some confusion because some people saw headlines that there was this August primary all of a sudden, so thats one of the things that weve been having to message with people that Yeah, there actually is a primary on June 28.
The congressman said he conducted a poll last week that asked likely primary voters if they knew when the vote was: Only two-thirds knew that the primary was on Tuesday, June 28, he said.
While the recently-split primaries might drive down turnout, there are three recent benchmarks worth considering.
Meanwhile, Republican turnout in the 2010 Paladino-Lazio race was 17.8 percent.

Whos Running For Governor And Lieutenant Governor
In the Democratic primary, Governor Hochul is running against two challengers: Representative Tom Suozzi, a Long Island congressman, and Jumaane Williams, New York Citys public advocate.
The four Republican candidates for governor are Representative Lee Zeldin, a Long Island congressman endorsed by the state party Rob Astorino, a former Westchester County executive who ran for governor in 2014 Harry Wilson, a former hedge fund manager and Andrew Giuliani, the son of Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor and a Trump ally.
In New York, lieutenant governors are elected separately. In the Democratic race, Ms. Hochuls deputy, Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado, is running against Diana Reyna, a former City Council member running in tandem with Mr. Suozzi, and Ana María Archila, an activist allied with Mr. Williams who was recently endorsed by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
In the Republican primary, the only candidate for lieutenant governor is Alison Esposito, a former New York City police deputy inspector whom Mr. Zeldin named as his running mate.
Ms. Hochul has a formidable lead in fund-raising over her Democratic opponents and has racked up key endorsements. She is also using the power of incumbency, emphasizing popular measures she helped push through the legislature, like a bill to shore up protections for abortion providers ahead of Fridays Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Will Suozzi Or Williams Pull Off A Stunner
Every indication is that Hochul has settled as the commanding frontrunner. She had big leads in every poll, landed a majority of endorsements from organized labor and dwarfed her opponents spending totals in the final weeks of the campaign. Her campaign went so far as to preemptively declare an imminent primary victory last Tuesday in a memo to staff and the media.
A win by either Suozzi or Williams might be the most stunning upset ever to occur in a Democratic primary in New York.
For that to happen, they have to hope that Hochuls numerous supporters arent actually enthusiastic enough about her to show up to the polls on a Tuesday in the summer. The voters who support the challengers the strongest the left wing of the party in the case of Williams and the right in the case of Suozzi would then need to turn out in droves.
The first results that come in on election night are usually those from New York City. So it would be difficult to imagine a path for Suozzi in which he doesnt win moderate Staten Island and all but impossible to imagine one for Williams without a big win in Brooklyn, his home borough. If Hochul wins both of those boroughs, its a safe bet that champagne corks would start to fly at her victory party less than an hour after polls close.

ALBANY, N.Y. Tuesdays primaries in New York are the first in the states history in which both major parties gubernatorial picks have faced competitive challenges for the nomination in the same year.
Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul is looking to fend off challenges from Long Island Rep. Tom Suozzi and New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams. Rep. Lee Zeldin is the nearly-unanimous pick of Republican leaders to represent their party, but needs to win a primary against former Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino former White House aide Andrew Giuliani and businessman Harry Wilson.
There are also a host of contested races further down the ballot, including a vote that will determine the Democratic gubernatorial nominees running mate.

Why Fill All Five Slots
New Yorkers love winners and, also, the Jets.
And for years, New York held runoff elections for contests for the top two candidates from any race if the initial winner got less than 40 percent of the vote, giving every New Yorker the chance to pick a winner.
The runoffs and the behind-the-scenes machinations were the stuff of lore most famously, the brutal 1977 battle between Ed Koch and Mario Cuomo and yet, they typically produced dismal turnout.
Good government groups have argued for years that one cost-effective solution would be a system that allows for instant runoffs, instead of getting voters to go back to the polls two weeks after the primary for the final bout.
But, it only fulfills its designed purpose if New Yorkers make their second, third, fourth and fifth choices on the ballot.
Opponents have argued the change is bound to confuse voters, particularly older voters who are used to voting for just one candidate at a time and may not be aware of the coming change.
Some City Council members filed a lawsuit in Manhattan attempting to block the implementation of rank-choice voting, arguing that City Hall and the Board of Elections have done an insufficient job educating the public and the cost of the failure would fall disproportionately on minority voters.

The 2022 New York gubernatorial election took place on November 8, 2022, to elect the governor and lieutenant governor of New York. Incumbent Democratic governor Kathy Hochul won a full term in office, defeating Republican Congressman Lee Zeldin in the closest New York gubernatorial election since 1994 and the closest Democratic victory since 1982. Hochul’s election marked the first time that a woman was elected to the state’s governorship.
Hochul ascended to the governorship in August 2021, upon Andrew Cuomo‘s resignation following allegations of sexual harassment. She sought a full term as governor. She appointed Brian Benjamin to the position of lieutenant governor and planned to run alongside him until he too resigned in April 2022. Congressman Antonio Delgado was appointed to replace Benjamin as lieutenant governor. Hochul defeated Jumaane Williams and Thomas Suozzi in the Democratic primary for governor, while Delgado defeated Ana Maria Archila and Diana Reyna in the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor.
Zeldin ran as the Republican nominee, having defeated Rob Astorino, Andrew Giuliani, and Harry Wilson in the Republican primary. Zeldin selected Alison Esposito, an NYPD officer, as his running mate, and she won unopposed in the primary. Esposito was the first openly gay major party nominee for statewide office in New York.
