Upscale Grocer Has So Far Ignored Neighbors Online Entreaties

Why You Spend So Much Money At Trader Joe’s

Riverdale wants a Trader Joes, but does Trader Joes want Riverdale?

No. At least, not yet.

An email has circulated throughout North Riverdale in recent weeks calling on locals to fill out a form on the supermarket chains website requesting the grocery chain open a new store in the area. Specifically, the email called for people to request Trader Joes replace the Key Foods at 5661 Riverdale Ave. The emails apparent author, Giordana Avila, declined to comment on her push.

We have learned that Trader Joes is actively seeking new supermarket locations around the city, including Riverdale area, Avila wrote. We are hoping to inundate Trader Joes with our requests over the next two weeks, and let them know we would welcome them to our neighborhood!

Trader Joes is not looking at Riverdale as a possible expansion location for 2019 or 2020, spokeswoman Kenya Friend-Daniel said. While the chain takes community interest into consideration, there are other factors that could affect how locations are selected, including accessibility, visibility, parking and building square footage. They also take into account competing stores in the vicinity, and whether there is enough of a shopping population to support a store location.

Trade magazine Supermarket News estimates Trader Joes earned $13 billion in revenue in 2015. To make that kind of bank, each of Trader Joes 474 stores would have to earn an average of $75,000 a day a hefty sum for North Riverdale.

The grocery stores are over priced here. This is a low income neighborhood and I have to go to a high income neighborhood in Manhattan to get decent priced groceries.

The Bronx is currently the only NYC borough without a Trader Joe’s and local residents would benefit greatly from the store’s excellent products, reasonable prices, and progressive hiring practices. Many Bronxites already travel all the way to W 72nd Street in Manhattan to do so.

We respectfully request that Trader Joe’s consider bringing one of its stores to the historic Grand Concourse neighborhood, located just steps from the world famous Yankee Stadium.

There is an ideal location on the bottom two floors of a new development at 810 River Avenue between East 157th and 158th streets. Information about the location can be seen here:
