Admire The Grand Army Plaza

The iconic Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch makes the Grand Army Plaza one of the most photographed parts of Brooklyn. That said, the sprawling attraction has plenty more to boast about: the plaza has over 14 acres for exploring, walking, jogging, cycling, or simply hanging out and reading a good page-turner.

Youll find Grand Plaza at the northern side of the much larger Prospect Park, where theres plenty more to see and do.

With over 700 institutions, you will never run out of things to see and facts to learn! If you come to Brooklyn with your family, we recommend Brooklyn Childrens Museum or the historical society for an educational afternoon.
  • Bring back a souvenir from the Brooklyn Flea market The Brooklyn Flea market contains vintage items, collectibles, local artwork, and souvenirs that are perfect for bringing home from your trip.
  • Go sightseeing in Dumbo This strangely-named area is usually a tourists first stop after arriving in Brooklyn. Williamsburg has changed a lot in the last twenty years. In the early ’90s, it was a place for artists priced out of Manhattan, and it soon transformed into the epicenter of Brooklyn’s hipster culture. However, the edgy hood is in a constant battle with mainstream culture. There was a lot of buzz when Williamsburg got its first Starbucks, and now it’s home to Brooklyn’s first Apple Store and Whole Foods, which boasts an incredible food hall. Despite the influx of chains, Bedford Avenue, Williamsburg’s main shopping street, is still filled with many local shops and restaurants, and the area works hard to maintain its indie feel.

Life preservers at the ready, folks, because the Waterfront Museum is actually a repurposed retired Hudson River Railroad Barge.

In fact, the Lehigh Valley Number 79, as it was originally known, is the only surviving all-wooden example of a railroad barge from what was known as the Lighterage Age if that doesnt get the maritime enthusiasts excited, nothing will.

Now dedicated to educating the public on the important role of oft-overlooked maritime commerce, the barge offers insightful free open tours on Thursday and Saturday afternoons.

Fire Shut Up In My Bones

    Available on demand at metopera.org.

As the citys classical calendar takes an early July sabbatical, its a fine time to check in on archived concerts from the just-concluded season. In recent weeks, the Metropolitan Opera has added some of its Live in HD cinema simulcasts to its on-demand web platform.

The most newsworthy addition is the composer Terence Blanchards Fire Shut Up in My Bones. In the recorded version, you can hear even more clearly some of the jazz influences that Blanchard, a celebrated trumpeter, included in his score. Subtle, propulsive swing from the drummer Jeff Watts, known as Tain, is more prominent in the mix, compared with the live sound in the Mets large auditorium. Complexities of Blanchards choral writing hit with new force, too. SETH COLTER WALLS

    Brooklyn Weekend: Day 2

Brooklyn & Dakota’s WEDDING “Behind the Scenes” (BTS) | Behind the Braids Ep. 180

This second day of your 36 hours in Brooklyn or weekend in Brooklyn itinerary will take you to one of the most popular and eventful neighborhoods in the city in Williamsburg to eat, dine, and explore. Then your next stop will be the colorful neighborhood of Bushwick where you can end your day with nightlife or head back to Williamsburg for dinner or drinks with a view to end your day.

    Morning in Williamsburg

One of the most popular neighborhoods to explore and a must add to any Brooklyn itinerary is the hip, waterfront neighborhood of Williamsburg. We recommend heading here mid-morning to enjoy a light morning snack and coffee at any of the best cafes in Williamsburg.

One of the most popular cafes in Brooklyn to check out is Devocion which has small pastries and great coffee in the heart of Williamsburg. Dont fill too much though because we want to brunch or enjoy a good lunch in this after a little morning exploring.

Once you get your coffee, head to the waterfront at Domino Park where you are rewarded with one of the best skyline views of the city across the East River. Domino Park also is one of the most interesting parks in Brooklyn because its built on the site of the former Domino Sugar Refinery and the ruins and buildings left over from those industrious days are all a part of this urban greenspace and park.

New York City beaches will re-open for swimming on Memorial Day Weekend on Saturday, May 29, 2021 and remain open through September 7th. The city outdoor pools will reopen on June 26th, while the indoor pools remain closed until further notice.

City playgrounds, golf courses and driving ranges, skate parks and grilling areas have all reopened. Dog runs are open with CoVid recommendations in effect. Basketball, handball, tennis, bocce, and volleyball courts have re-opened, but with CoVid guidelines remaining in effect. Some field and court permit applications are now being reviewed and issued.

Check individual house museum websites for updated hours and visitation information. The Wildlife Conservation Society re-opened its zoos and aquarium to all guests.

I spoke to the National Park Service which informed me that the two National Parks in Brooklyn will be open. You can walk, bike, skate board and visit the waterfront. The National Parks Brooklyn include Floyd Bennett Field which is just north of the Rockaways in eastern Brooklyn, and the Sandy Hook, Gateway National Recreation Area.

An Enormous New Immersive Art Venue Is Opening In Greenpoint Next Month

ArtsDistrict Brooklyn will also be home to an NFT gallery.

ArtsDistrict Brooklyn, also referred to as AD/BK, is a new immersive arts venue set to open in Greenpoint at 25 Franklin Street this July.

The 25,000-square-foot space is the former home of concert space House of Vans, which closed back in 2018.

To celebrate the opening of the venue, sure to become part and parcel of New York’s larger devotion to all things experiential, AD/BK will host the U.S. premiere of Limitless AI, a 70-minute show that first debuted at the Atelier des Lumières museum in Paris.

Two other shows will be mounted on premise simultaneously: Flight and Séance. Both created by London-based company Darkfield, the two immersive, audio experiences will be presented in complete darkness inside customized 40-foot shipping containers. How cool?

In addition to its function as an exhibit space, the complex will be home to a daytime café that’s being marketed as a pre-show destination as well. Visitors will get to enjoy free Wi-Fi and an open-air patio space with outdoor seating.

Also on the docket: an NFT gallery where folks will get to purchase works from main stage shows. AD/BK might therefore become the very first destination in New York to blend two popular trends: NFTs and immersive art.

Fotografiska New York is a museum experience for the modern world. The institution hosts its first full-building takeover with David LaChapelle: make Believe. Vibrant images fill all six floors of the museum, with 150 works full of wit, celebrity, and technical innovation. Included are the last-ever portraits of Andy Warhol and Michael Jackson, household-name album covers, and allegorical works in dialogue with the AIDS epidemic. The show weaves together recurring themes of religion, the environment and the play between artifice and nature, gender identity, societal ideals of beauty, and LaChapelles legendary explorations of pop culture fame. The artist collaborated on the shows layout, which takes the form of a journey, interacting with the church-like details of Fotografiskas stunning 1894 neo-Gothic architecture.
