Route Description And Service

The B44 starts at the Williamsburg Plaza Bus Terminal in Williamsburg. It then turns onto Robeling Street and turns south onto Bedford Avenue or Lee Avenue , making only two stops to Flushing Avenue. At Flushing Avenue, Lee Avenue becomes Nostrand Avenue and continues down Nostrand and Bedford Avenues to Fulton Street.

At Fulton Street, southbound buses remain on Nostrand Avenue while northbound buses take two routes: the local route shifts to New York Avenue, while Select Bus Service buses remain on Bedford Avenue, which becomes Rogers Avenue at Dean Street . Once it leaves Fulton Street, the B44 Local, SBS and B49 travel down their streets through the neighborhoods of Crown Heights and Flatbush, parallel to the IRT Nostrand Avenue Line south of Eastern Parkway, until Foster Avenue, where the B49 heads west along Foster Avenue to head to Ocean Avenue. At Farragut Rd, the northbound B44 Local shifts back to Nostrand Avenue, as two way traffic resumes.

During daytime hours, the B44 Local operates between Sheepshead Bay and Flushing Avenue, with some buses starting at Avenue U. SBS buses operate between Knapp Street and Williamsburg and provide all daytime B44 service north of Flushing Avenue. Additional SBS buses operate between Avenue U and Flushing Avenue. During late nights, when the SBS isn’t running, the B44 operates the full route, but terminates at Emmons Avenue and Nostrand Avenue.

Pier 1 And Fulton Ferry Landing

Pier 1 was the first section of parkland, having opened in March 2010. It is located directly south of the Brooklyn Bridge and the EmpireFulton Ferry section of the park. The pier is Brooklyn Bridge Park’s largest and is the only one constructed on filled land rather than pilings. The area includes two landscaped lawns overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge and New York Harbor, a salt marsh with native plants, a playground, a granite lookout, a waterfront walkway, and various food and drink concessions.

Fulton Ferry Landing is directly adjacent to Pier 1, on the site of Brooklyn’s first ferry landing, which opened in 1642. Reopened to the public in 1997, Fulton Ferry Landing provides views of the Manhattan skyline and houses the classical music venue Bargemusic. The landing includes an old fireboat house, which formerly housed the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory between 2001 and 2018. Since 2019, the fireboat house has been run by two concessionaires. The New York Water Taxi and NYC Ferry are also accessible from the landing. The landing contains railings upon which are engraved the Walt Whitman poem “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry“, as well as a deck with bronze reliefs of historic events nearby. A pavilion adjacent to the fireboat house was proposed for Fulton Ferry Landing in 2019, but was delayed due to objections by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.

The Landing Was Developed To Help Finance The Park

Goldman Sachss real estate fund is reportedly in contract to buy The Landing, a 15-story rental building developed several years ago as part of Brooklyn Bridge Park, for $90 million.

The famed investment firm is slated to buy the 140-unit building from RAL Companies and China Vanke, according to The Real Deal.

Seventy percent of the buildings apartments, as opposed to 30 percent, are affordable, according to the real estate publication. However, it benefits from a 35-year tax break under a PILOT tax abatement program.

A team from Cushman & Wakefield brokered the sale of the building, whose address is 15 Bridge Park Drive, The Real Deal added.

The building, which is at the Atlantic Avenue-Pier 6 end of the park, was one of several that were developed in order to help finance the park.

According to an article published in the Brooklyn Eagle in 2018, it is the shorter of two residential buildings at Pier 6, the other being the 28-story Quay Building.

The 100 out of 140 units that are affordable were slated to be filled by a lottery, while the remaining 40 were market-rate units that started at $3,100 per month.

The Eagle also reported that local groups tried to prevent their construction for several years, but in February, a judge ruled that the towers could be built in the green space.

In 2020, Goldman Sachs paid $100 million to buy another Brooklyn apartment building the 19-story One Flatbush Avenue in the Downtown area, The Real Deal reported.

Pier 3 And Greenway Terrace

In November 2013, the Greenway Terrace opened on the shoreline adjacent to Pier 3. The terrace contains expansive lawns, a granite terrace, and the first sound-attenuating hill within the park. The granite terrace features salvaged granite blocks within planted areas, surrounded by trees. The granite was salvaged from reconstruction work on the Roosevelt Island Bridge and Willis Avenue Bridge. Working in partnership with NYC Parks, Brooklyn Bridge Park received surplus granite from the bridge reconstruction projects, adding to its sustainable features. Additionally, the Pier 3 hill was formed with salvaged material from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority‘s East Side Access tunneling project. The hills were also raised through the installation of foam blocks. The 20-foot-tall Hill was created to help mitigate noise from the nearby Brooklyn Queens Expressway, as well as sheltering the park from Furman Street and Brooklyn Heights.

Dahn Vo: We the People, a public art installation inspired by the Statue of Liberty, was on display on Pier 3 from May to December 2014. The sculpture was a copper replica of the statue in 250 parts fabricated over the course of four years using the original techniques and materials. Visitors to Brooklyn Bridge Park saw a replica of the draped sleeve of the statue’s arm which holds the golden torch.

With all this talk of business and technology, you might be fooled into thinking the area isnt a fun place to visit. In reality, its one of Brooklyns most fascinating and dynamic neighborhoods.

Local And Limited Bus Service

Buses were substituted for streetcars on April 1, 1951 the B44 bus now continues south past Avenue U into Sheepshead Bay, some B44 buses now go as far as Emmons Avenue and Knapp Street near the foot of Sheepshead Bay.

Originally, the buses used were New York City Transit Authority Mack diesel buses. Around 1959, the B44 became one of the first bus lines in New York City to use the “new look” GMC buses that became popular in New York City during the 1960s and 1970s. The route ran in both directions on Nostrand Avenue until the mid-1960s, when the section north of Flatbush became a one-way southbound thoroughfare. From that time on, the B44 northbound ran on New York Avenue.

Limited-stop service was added on September 10, 1995.

Tips For Visiting Brooklyn Bridge Park

To be even more prepared for your visit, heres some great tips to know before visiting Brooklyn Bridge Park:

• Different areas of the park open and close at different times, but the majority of it is open from 6 a.m.-1 a.m.
• The park is free to enter.
• Restrooms are located at Pier 6, Pier 5 Uplands, Pier 2, in 99 Plymouth and in the Empire Stores shopping center.
• There is parking nearby, but its very limited. There are some metered parking spaces in a public parking lot on Furman Street near Pier 2. Near Pier 6 and Pier 1, there are two other paid parking lots.

Architecture And Places Of Interest

Brooklyn Heights was the first neighborhood protected by the 1965 Landmarks Preservation Law of . The neighborhood is largely composed of blocks of picturesque rowhouses and a few mansions. A great range of architectural styles is represented, including , , , , , , and , as well as a few 2/1/2-story houses from the early 19th century in the northern part of the neighborhood. Some houses were constructed of brick, but the dominant building material was brownstone or “Jersey freestone”, a reddish-brown stone from .

A typical brownstone rowhouse was three or four stories tall, with the main floor above the street level and reached by stairs, referred to as a “stoop”, a word derived from Dutch. The basement is typically a half-flight down from the street, and was used as the work area for servants, including the kitchen. The first floor would be the location of the public rooms, bedrooms were on the second floor, and servants’ quarters were on the top floor. The rear of the lot would feature a private garden. Aside from rowhouses, a number of houses, particularly along Pierrepont Street and Pierrepont Place, are authentic .

The concentration of over 600 pre-Civil War houses, one of the largest ensembles of such housing in the nation, and the human scale of the three, four- and five-story buildings creates a neighborly atmosphere.
