DESCRIPTION: Manhattan Theatre Club , a Tony Award-winning nonprofit theatre dedicated to the production of contemporary plays and musicals, seeks a full time Business Assistant. For over forty years, MTC has been the creative and artistic home for Americas most gifted theatrical artists, producing works of the highest quality by contemporary American and international playwrights. MTC produces eight plays annually in Broadways restored Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on West 47th Street and off Broadway at the historic NY City Center complex on West 55th Street.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to: accounts payable and accounts receivable, maintaining the general ledger, monthly asset schedules, and updating and reconciling accounts and expenses. This individual will also oversee the Business Intern, working with them to produce weekly box office statements and manage the ordering of office supplies.
The ideal candidate will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, a sharp eye for detail, exceptional organizational skills and the ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple projects at once. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel required and experience with Great Plains Dynamics, ADP Payroll and/or Tessitura a plus. A Bachelors degree in Accounting or Business or equivalent experience is also required.

Great a resource as it is, TKTS has limitations: You have to wait there in person, often for a long time, and you can only get tickets on the day of the show . Thankfully, the Internet provides alternatives. The popular TodayTix app lets you find discounted tickets on your mobile phone up to month in advance discount deals are listed alongside tickets being sold at regular prices. Another reliable online source for cheap Broadway seats is New York Show Tickets membership there costs about $5 per month. Good discounts can be also be found at BroadwayBox, TheaterMania, Playbill and GoldStar. Consider visiting all of these options and shopping around for the best bargain. And in January/February and September, you can avail yourself of the two-for-one deals offered through the Broadway Week program.
Rush The Theater Or Play The Lottery
Many productions offer special same-day rush tickets, which in some cases are the only way to get tickets at a reasonable price for shows that are otherwise sold out. Rush tickets to Broadway and Off Broadway shows can sell for as little as $20 apiece. Go to the theater’s box office as soon as it opens on the day of the performance to check that means 10am on most days, and 11am or noon on Sundays. Conveniently, some shows offer mobile rushes through TodayTix.
Most Broadway shows also now conduct digital lotteries on the morning of or the before each performance, either on their own or through TodayTix. But perhaps the most competitive of these lotteries are held weekly: the Hamilton lottery and the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child lottery, both of which are now held once a week on Fridays. About New York City Center
MTC Stage I and Stage II productions are performed in the historic New York City Center complex on West 55th Street. Access to MTC theatres is at the east and west entrance doors on West 55th Street.
Restrooms and a coatroom are located on the first floor landing of the theatre. There is also a lounge on the first landing of the theatre open exclusively for members of MTCs Patron Program. Refreshments can be purchased at the concession area in the downstairs lobby before the performance and during intermission. Eating and drinking are only permitted in the theatre lobby. Smoking is prohibited inside all areas of New York City Center. The use of cameras, cellular phones or any type of audio or video equipment is also prohibited. Masks must be worn at all times in the theater.
Assisted listening devices are available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis and are located at the coat check.

MTC is currently repped on Broadway by The Collaboration. The upcoming Summer, 1976, will be the final MTC production under Groves co-leadership.
Grove said in a statement that he was stepping down to spend more time with my wife Maggie and extended family, and I will continue to explore teaching, mentoring, and consulting projects. He told The New York Times that I started in the professional theater when I was 19. I dont know that Im ready to get into a rocking chair, but I do want to be able to pursue small projects, a lifelong commitment to teaching, service to the community, that kind of stuff.

Meadow, who created and launched MTC in 1972, said in a statement that Grove has sustained MTC with dedication and vision, executing growth, working as a force in creating our reputation for excellence, and fostering integrity in every aspect of our work.
MTCs first 10 seasons took place Off Off Broadway in a three-story Bohemian social hall on East 73rd Street in New York City. In the 1983-84 season, Grove and Meadow moved the company Off Broadway to New York City Center, creating a 300-seat theatre and, a year later, adding a 150-seat theatre. Many of the productions MTC premiered at its two City Center houses went on to be performed in extended runs in New York and across the country.
MTC says its launched a nationwide search for Groves replacement.

The Collaboration is a play about the professional partnership and personal friendship between two renowned artists: Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The two were brought together in the 1980s by their shared art dealer, who saw a joint exhibit between the two as a way to rekindle Warhol’s career and kickstart the young Basquiat’s. The artists couldn’t have been more different: Warhol was 30 years Basquiat’s senior. Warhol was a pop artist Basquiat, a Neo-Expressionist. As playwright Anthony McCarten explores, both were cynical for different reasons Warhol disliked the art world’s quickness to move on to the next new artists and forget older ones, and Basquiat knew that the odds were stacked against him as a Black man in a white-dominated industry.
Ironically, after they died , both artists’ works would become some of the most commodified art in recent years, appearing on everything from shirts to skateboards. But through their partnership while they were alive, The Collaboration explores what art-making means, its value, and what different generations of artists can learn from each other.

Samuel J Friedman Theatre Design
Constructed in 1925, the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre was built by the Chanin brothers, who used famed architect of the era Herbert Krappto design it. The original Biltmore Theatre was built with approximately 1000 seats and a single balcony. When renovated, the number of seats in the theater was reduced to 650, creating a more spacious feel for each patron. The Biltmore Theatres interior had been made a New York City landmark just prior to its devastating fire in 1987.

The citys biggest nonprofit theaters all have programs aimed at encouraging younger audiences. Theatergoers ages 18 to 40 can buy tickets to Roundabout Theatre Company for just $30 per show by joining its Hiptix program. If you’re between 21 and 35, you can join Lincoln Center Theater’s LincTix program, which offers $32 tickets to all shows. Manhattan Theatre Clubs 30 Under 35 program, as the name suggests, allows patrons 35 or younger to buy tickets for $30. Other major companies, such as Playwrights Horizons, also offer programs for young theatergoers.

The Music Man, meanwhile, set previous 8-show records in 53 out of 54 performance weeks and the 9-show record 51 times. The production broke its own house record 10 times during its run, routinely selling out with some of the highest ticket prices on Broadway. Last weeks average Music Man ticket price was a big $288.73, topping runners-up Funny Girl and Hamilton by a healthy margin.
The six shows playing final weeks were:
- A Strange Loop, grossing $955,591 and filling 99.31% of seats
- Death of a Salesman, $914,407 , 97.56%
- Mike Birbiglia: The Old Man & the Pool, $762,803 , 97.43%
- Ohio State Murders, $641,977 , 93.50%
- The Music Man, $3,589,149 , 101.89%
- Topdog/Underdog, $572,922 , 93.03%
New to the roster was Pictures From Home starring Nathan Lane, Danny Burstein and Zoë Wanamaker. Playing four previews at Studio 54, the play took in $283,572, filling 93% of seats. Opening night is February 9.
Filling only about 75% of seats at the Shubert, Some Like It Hot fell short of the 90%+ level of most other shows last week. The musical grossed $921,894. The Collaboration was at about 83% of capacity at Manhattan Theatre Clubs Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, grossing $351,840 and earning its third and final one-week extension .
Season to date, Broadway has grossed $1,036,878,642, with total attendance of 7,967,176 at about 87% of capacity.

The Manhattan Theatre Club was founded in 1970 by Albert E. Jeffcoat, Margaret Kennedy, Philip Barber and A. Joseph Tandet. In 1972, Lynne Meadow was hired as Artistic Director. In 1975, Barry Grove was hired as Managing Director. Due to their working relationship, one of the most long-standing in the non-profit community, the Manhattan Theatre Club produces “works of the highest quality by both established and emerging American and international playwrights” -e.g. Bad Habits, Crimes of the Heart, Ain’t Misbehavin’, The Singular Life of Alfred Nobbs, and Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune. Correspondence with financial and theatre related agencies, artistic personnel connected with both proposed and produced productions, and with Manhattan Theatre Club staff makes up a considerable portion of this collection. This collection also contains papers that illustrate the practical business of running a theater company such as literary office reports, meeting minutes, and guidelines, as well as a significant amount of production related material including casting information, production reports, programs, and general publicity.
