Accusations Of Liberal Bias
In 2004, the newspaper’s public editor Daniel Okrent said in an opinion piece that The New York Times did have a liberal bias in news coverage of certain social issues such as abortion and same-sex marriage. He stated that this bias reflected the paper’s cosmopolitanism, which arose naturally from its roots as a hometown paper of New York City, writing that the coverage of the Times‘s Arts & Leisure Culture and the Sunday Times Magazine trend to the left.

The National League’s top two teams both were sent packing in the NLDS, as the Padres ousted the 111-win Dodgers and the Phillies knocked out the defending champion Braves. In the American League, the Astros finished a sweep of the Mariners, but needed 18 innings to do so in a bizarre 1-0 win.
These playoffs began with 12 teams, but the Mets, Cardinals, Blue Jays and Rays were eliminated last weekend in the Wild Card Series. The top two teams in each league received byes and started their postseason journeys in the LDS round on Tuesday. With the Wild Card Series and three of the four Division Series in the books, the high stakes best-of-seven League Championship Series will start in San Diego on Tuesday and in Houston on Wednesday. The best-of-seven World Series is scheduled to start on Friday, Oct. 28.

One of the biggest challenges, which Goldstein glosses over, is that writing takes timelots of it.
Students need time to think of ideas, organize their thoughts, and write. They need time to read their work aloud, and to hear the responses of fellow students. They need opportunities to practice printing, cursive, and eventually typing. They also need time to work on punctuation and grammar. Not every skill needs to be covered for every assignment. But students need a comprehensive blend of learning experiences to master mechanics, gain a good ear for the written word, and develop the craft of writing.
Teachers need time too. Changing instructional methods requires an intense investment of resources.
So what about this
- What if the two groups of teachers switched, so each group took both types of training?
- What if they returned to their schools and were paid by their districts to research core standards, prepare new lesson plans, and update instructional materials?
- What if, throughout the year, they received encouragement from administrators, and had time to meet with fellow teachers to share information on whats working?
- What if teacher certification required more courses on writing and writing instruction?
Goldstein seems to loop back to a blame game, pitting one approach against another . That style of reporting generates pageviews and commentary, but is self-defeating. Readers are left with no solutions.

I began reading even before I started school. By the time I was 10 years old, I loved books so much they were all I wanted for Christmas. Our little logging town in southern Oregon was so small it had just two TV channels. People were poor, and we were poorer than most, but we were rich in books. My dad took us to the library every Saturday. Books showed me different worlds.
In sixth grade, I started to write my own stories. One was about a six-foot-tall frog named Herman who loved peanut butter and went on an adventure trying to find some. I decided it would appeal to Roald Dahl. My father told me that you could write to authors care of their publishers.
So, I sent off my storycarefully printed in pencil on wide-ruled paperto the address in New York printed inside the front cover of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. That book about a poor boy with big dreams really spoke to me.
Eventually my story found its way to Dahl in England. He sent me back a postcard. It’s dated 24th August 1972, and says, “Dear April, I loved your story about Herman the frog. I read it aloud to my daughter, Ophelia, who also loved it. I read it to my secretary, Hazel, who giggled. Lots of love, Roald Dahl.
But Dahl didnt stop there. Over lunch, he showed my story to his editor. She was also the editor of Puffin Post, a British children’s magazine. She contacted me and asked to publish it.

All this being said, it does make a lot of sense for professional writers to focus on bestseller lists. Professional writers look at bestseller lists as a necessary evil in their industry, because they do confer status and help them gain credibility.
