How To Write For The New York Times

Accusations Of Liberal Bias

Thomas Friedman Explains How to Write an Op-Ed for the New York Times

In 2004, the newspaper’s public editor Daniel Okrent said in an opinion piece that The New York Times did have a liberal bias in news coverage of certain social issues such as abortion and same-sex marriage. He stated that this bias reflected the paper’s cosmopolitanism, which arose naturally from its roots as a hometown paper of New York City, writing that the coverage of the Times‘s Arts & Leisure Culture and the Sunday Times Magazine trend to the left.

If you’re examining the paper’s coverage of these subjects from a perspective that is neither urban nor Northeastern nor culturally seen-it-all if you are among the groups The Times treats as strange objects to be examined on a laboratory slide if your value system wouldn’t wear well on a composite New York Times journalist, then a walk through this paper can make you feel you’re traveling in a strange and forbidding world.

Times public editor Arthur Brisbane wrote in 2012:

When The Times covers a national presidential campaign, I have found that the lead editors and reporters are disciplined about enforcing fairness and balance, and usually succeed in doing so. Across the paper’s many departments, though, so many share a kind of political and cultural progressivism for lack of a better term that this worldview virtually bleeds through the fabric of The Times.

What Is A Guest Essay

Opinion guest essays were formerly known as Op-Eds because they appeared in print opposite the editorial page. At their core, Opinion guest essays are an argument defined and substantiated with evidence. Combining rich discussion and debate in an important and unique way The New York Times helps readers better understand the world. Inviting intelligent discussion from all shades of opinion has been core to the work of The Times since 1896, when our publisher Adolph Ochs it part of the newspapers mission.

We believe in the value of creating space for people who arent journalists, and who often have no institutional affiliation with The New York Times, to speak directly to readers instead of being mediated through a reporter. By design, these arguments and voices will often contrast with or challenge those of our own columnists and editorials. Guest essays should provide New York Times readers with the most robust, wide-ranging and distinctive collection of arguments and ideas available.

Guest essays can take many forms, such as:

We discourage essays that are primarily responses to other Opinion articles, columns or editorials. The best forum for response essays is the Letters page. To send a letter, e-mail .

The Yankees kept their season alive Sunday night with a Game 4 win in their ALDS matchup against the Guardians. They will play Game 5 for a spot in the ALCS on Monday night in New York. Getting Back To Real Progress Not Polemics

One of the biggest challenges, which Goldstein glosses over, is that writing takes timelots of it.

Students need time to think of ideas, organize their thoughts, and write. They need time to read their work aloud, and to hear the responses of fellow students. They need opportunities to practice printing, cursive, and eventually typing. They also need time to work on punctuation and grammar. Not every skill needs to be covered for every assignment. But students need a comprehensive blend of learning experiences to master mechanics, gain a good ear for the written word, and develop the craft of writing.

Teachers need time too. Changing instructional methods requires an intense investment of resources.

So what about this

  • What if the two groups of teachers switched, so each group took both types of training?
  • What if they returned to their schools and were paid by their districts to research core standards, prepare new lesson plans, and update instructional materials?
  • What if, throughout the year, they received encouragement from administrators, and had time to meet with fellow teachers to share information on whats working?
  • What if teacher certification required more courses on writing and writing instruction?

Goldstein seems to loop back to a blame game, pitting one approach against another . That style of reporting generates pageviews and commentary, but is self-defeating. Readers are left with no solutions.

The Power Of Mentorship For Writers: Or How Roald Dahl Helped Me Be A Writer

  • Publish date: Oct 10, 2022

I began reading even before I started school. By the time I was 10 years old, I loved books so much they were all I wanted for Christmas. Our little logging town in southern Oregon was so small it had just two TV channels. People were poor, and we were poorer than most, but we were rich in books. My dad took us to the library every Saturday. Books showed me different worlds.

In sixth grade, I started to write my own stories. One was about a six-foot-tall frog named Herman who loved peanut butter and went on an adventure trying to find some. I decided it would appeal to Roald Dahl. My father told me that you could write to authors care of their publishers.

So, I sent off my storycarefully printed in pencil on wide-ruled paperto the address in New York printed inside the front cover of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. That book about a poor boy with big dreams really spoke to me.

Eventually my story found its way to Dahl in England. He sent me back a postcard. It’s dated 24th August 1972, and says, “Dear April, I loved your story about Herman the frog. I read it aloud to my daughter, Ophelia, who also loved it. I read it to my secretary, Hazel, who giggled. Lots of love, Roald Dahl.

But Dahl didnt stop there. Over lunch, he showed my story to his editor. She was also the editor of Puffin Post, a British children’s magazine. She contacted me and asked to publish it.

Get Some Mainstream Press To Validate Your Book

This is not 100% necessary, but the more mainstream mediapress you get, the more the book editors at The New York Times will consider your book to be valid. I was very serious when I said that this is a popularity contest, and to be popular, you have to show up at the right places .

When I say mainstream media I mean any media source centered around New York City or that the coastal media elite read and take seriously. Like I keep telling you, they are elitist snobs. They dont count anything not in their universe, no matter how much it sells.

By the waymainstream press almost never sells books. This is only about getting the editors at The New York Times to take you seriously, not about selling books.

Who Should Try For A Bestselling Book

All this being said, it does make a lot of sense for professional writers to focus on bestseller lists. Professional writers look at bestseller lists as a necessary evil in their industry, because they do confer status and help them gain credibility.

So they get a smart long term plan to hit them, work the steps, and then once theyve been on a few times they ignore them. Then, they focus on selling books directly to fans , not hitting bestseller lists .

But for authors whose main revenue source is their business and use books as marketing tools, I can tell you: hitting a bestseller list creates very few tangible results for your book.

It doesnt get your book much more attention. It doesnt mean much for your business. It doesnt help sales much. It doesnt get in front of many more clients or help your marketing.

Im not saying it has zero effect. It can have some effect.

Almost all of the impact of hitting a bestseller list is personal and social impact. There is not much business or sales impact, and when you measure the low impact against the high tradeoffs, its a bad decision. This is why almost all of our authors dont end up pursuing it.

Have A Realistic Plan To Get 10k+ Pre

This cannot be a hope or a wish. If you dont have at least 10k pre-ordered booksthrough sales channels that The New York Times sees as valid and counts in their listyou probably wont hit the list.

That means books ordered or bought at a bookstore that reports its sales to the New York Times, or through Amazon or iBooks, or some of the other major channels that the New York Times counts. You cant just order 10k copies from your publisher. They wont count that.

Even if you get a corporation to sponsor you and actually buy 10k copies, you have to route those sales through a channel that The New York Times countsor they ignore them for the purposes of the list .

And even better, they often wont count any bulk sales, which means those sales have to be done individually.

Many experts will tell you that you only need to sell 5k books to hit the bestseller list. Thats not wrong, but it doesnt work many times. In my experience helping dozens of authors work through this process, if you are an unknown author, the bar is much higher than 5k. The 5k number is applicable to known authors and books that have already been on the list, but is very dangerous for first time or non-established authors.

How do you get 10k pre-orders? There are two basic ways to do this:

  • You already have an audience who is willing to pre-order your book, or
  • You spend a lot of money to buy your way onto the list. This is basically cheating, and it usually costs more than $250k .

Reaching The Reader: Luck That Can Change Your Life

Because there are hundreds of new books competing for readers in any given month, it can be hard for a title to break through the noise.

But celebrity book clubs still have the power to move books en masse. In 2021, 10 of the 15 debut novels on The Timess best-seller list were book club selections by Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Jenna Bush Hager or Good Morning America.

Chans publicist, Anne Tate Pearce, had given the book to one of Bush Hagers producers at the Today show in March 2021. Bush Hager devoured it on vacation.

I was so engrossed in this world, which felt like nothing Id ever read before, Bush Hager said. And as a mom, I could totally relate with many of the feelings.

Chan was negotiating bedtime with her toddler one night in April when Kaffel Simonoff called to tell her that The School for Good Mothers would be Bush Hagers January 2022 book club pick.

I screamed, Chan said. And then I had to hang up my daughter needed me so I had to call Meredith hours later to ask if it actually happened.

Chans book was already a LibraryReads and Indie Next selection lists of upcoming books to watch chosen by librarians and by independent book store owners. With the Today show boost, the best-seller list suddenly seemed within the realm of possibility, Chan said. A book club selection is something that can actually change your life as an author.
