Each patients needs are unique, which makes it difficult to pin down exact costs. However, by breaking down the different types of expenses involved in IVF, you can come up with a closer estimate for your needs.

How Much Ivf Actually Costs

In Vitro Fertilization known as IVF provides rejoices in the life of infertile couples.IVF helps with fertilization, embryo development, and implantation. It is one of the most widely known types of assisted reproductive technology . IVF works by using a combination of medicines and surgical procedures to help sperm fertilize an egg, and help the fertilized egg implant in the uterus.

The most basic form of IVF involves transferring a fresh embryo once its developed for around five days. However, if you want to schedule your transfer for later, or save additional embryos to try for a future pregnancy, you can freeze the embryos through cryopreservation. Also, if you want any genetic testing, you need to freeze the embryos first. The related costs include:

Ivf Cost With Insurance

Out of pocket costs for IVF can be substantially reduced with the help of insurance. But what exactly does IVF cost with insurance? Thats a bit tricky because while only 25% or so of Americans have insurance coverage for the IVF treatment itself, more have coverage for diagnostic testing, monitoring, or other components of the IVF procedure which could lower your total out of cost expenses. Some insurance plans will cover:

  • No fertility related expenses.
  • Diagnostic testing for infertility but no treatment.
  • Diagnostic testing for infertility and some less costly/invasive treatments like IUI .
  • Diagnostic testing and the full spectrum of fertility treatments including IVF.

With that in mind, its important you read your health insurance plan carefully and give them a call to ask any further questions. Remember even if your IVF is covered by your specific health insurance plan costs could still be subject to your deductible, which means you could spend over $10,000 out of pocket before you benefits kick in.

That said, there are two main ways to get insurance with IVF coverage in the united states.

  • Live in a state that mandates insurance companies offer IVF coverage.
  • Work for a company that volunteering offers fertility benefits as a way of attracting and maintaining talent . . . or to simply do what is right!

Typically, IVF patients have many expenses beyond the procedure itself that can add significantly to the overall cost, including medications, blood tests and ultrasound monitoring.

To keep her expenses as low as possible, Anna ordered the priciest medications from Israel and purchased others through discounts she found using GoodRx. Plus she paid for her IVF using a newly acquired credit card to snag a promotional points offer. Those points paid for the flights to and from New York, as well as accommodations and a rental car.

During the egg retrieval phase, Anna rented an Airbnb and a car, staying for about 10 days. Her job provides “pretty good benefits,” she says, so she was able to just take vacation time, but her husband was only able to join her for the last few days of the trip.

The only reason we’re talking about the cost of IVF is because it’s not covered by insurance.Betsy Campbellchief engagement officer at Resolve

Once both Anna and her husband donated the eggs and sperm, the doctors went to work. Of the roughly 40 eggs retrieved from Anna, 17 were successfully fertilized. Those embryos were then biopsied and tested, but just one turned out to be chromosomally normal. That surprised and disappointed Anna, who was hoping for a few embryos in case the transfer was not successful. “I was pretty prepared for failure, but I went back ,” she says.

Could State Abortion Bans Impact Ivf

So far, it doesnt appear that state abortion bans affect procedures like IVF in those states. But reproductive health professionals and advocates remain concerned that current or future state laws could include language that would place restrictions on assisted reproductive technology because it involves human embryos.

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine analyzed 13 state laws that triggered abortion bans once Roe v. Wade was overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court. The ASRM found that the potential impact of state laws on procedures like IVF depends on how terms like embryo, unborn child or fertilization are defined.

Most of the state laws analyzed specifically refer to the treatment of embryos inside a pregnant person. However, Utahs law is written broadly enough that it could apply to embryos created in a lab setting. IVF often leads to the creation of multiple embryos, some of which are not transferred into a patients uterus. Some of the remaining embryos are discarded or donated for research.

One could argue that discarding an embryo or donating an embryo for research use is an intentional or attempted killing of a live unborn child and constitutes an abortion under definition, the report states.

The report also states that while abortion laws may not impact IVF yet, they open the door for additional legislation that could have a more direct effect.

In Vitro Fertilization Is An Expensive Procedure But How Much Does Ivf Actually Cost

On average, nationally, a fresh IVF cycle costs $12,500, at Morgan Fertility and Reproductive Medicine we have a compassionate care discount which will bring the price down to $9,900 , before medications, which typically run another $3,000 to $5,000. In a fresh IVF cycle, eggs are harvested transvaginally after a closely monitored period of ovulation-inducing medications and then mixed with fresh sperm. One or two of the best-looking of the resulting embryos are then transferred to the uterus via a thin catheter.

One of the most complex aspects of an infertility diagnosis is that for you to have your best chances for conception with IVF, you need to act as quickly as you can upon diagnosis. This biological urgency doesnt exactly complement the equally pragmatic need to invest in the time to budget and save for treatment.

The Cost Of Ivf Depends On Your Personal History And Your Medical Plans

The types of procedures used, and hence the cost, vary from patient to patient. “Factors include patient age and past medical history, especially infertility history, which helps the doctor to determine what type of stimulation is best,” says Dr. Alvin Gordon, M.D., the Chief Operating Officer of New Hope Fertility Center.

More From Good Housekeeping

Once a patient history is taken, the medical team can determine if the best course of action is to do a conventional IVF, or if they qualify for something like New Hope’s Natural Cycle IVF or Mini-IVF, which do not require as many fertility medications and are therefore less expensive.

There are other, personal choices that can affect the prices well. For example, “If the patient has low tolerance for pain and requires general anesthesia for the egg retrieval,” Dr. Gordon says, “there’s an additional cost for the anesthesiologist to administer the anesthesia.”

When all is said and done, a plan is drawn up that includes monitoring, medication, egg retrieval, fertilization, caring for and storing the embryos, and possibly genetic testing, all of which come with their own price tags. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures which keeps track of state laws regarding fertility treatments, this all usually works out to somewhere between $12,000 to $17,000 per cycle of IVF. But again, this varies by state, by patient, and by procedure.

The Cost Of Ivf Medications: $4000 Billed By A Fertility Pharmacy

The average cost of IVF Medications is around $4,000. This is the cost of injectable medications used for ovarian stimulation and transfer medications. If pregnancy is achieved, medication expenses could continue to rise as they are often used for many months, or even the duration of the gestation in order to provide pregnancy support. Even without the medications used to support an established IVF pregnancy, it is one of the largest line items in an IVF cycle and even has the potential to cost more than the services billed by the fertility clinic.

While $4,000 is a good average there is a wide range of possible prices based on a few factors:

  • Protocol: Medication protocols range significantly meaning you could pay significantly less for things like a low-dose or mini IVF protocol or significantly more for a high dose cycle or those that use immune medications in the treatment of failed IVF cycles or recurrent pregnancy loss.
  • Clinic: Larger clinics have stronger purchasing/negotiating power on behalf of their patients. As a way to secure business from a large clinic, specialty fertility pharmacies will offer their clients better prices.
  • Pharmacy: Pharmacies naturally vary in price. While the variation may not be too much, the potential savings can justify shopping around.
  • Type/Brand: Certain brand name medications can cost slightly more than generics if available.

Unless youre pursuing a mini IVF protocol, you can expect to pay at least $3,000 for your IVF medications.

Earlier evaluation and treatment may be warranted based on an individuals medical history or physical findings.

Can You Take Out A Loan For Ivf

IVF loans can help you to pay for fertility treatments, and your clinic may offer them as one option for financial assistance. Whether it makes sense to take out an IVF loan can depend on your financial resources and budget. If you need to borrow a substantial amount of money, that could create a financial burden that might be difficult to handle on top of the considerable other costs of having a child. In order to find the right option, you should compare the best IVF loans available.

Figure Out How You Will Pay For Treatment

Although fertility treatment can be expensive, it isnt just for the independently wealthy. People pay for I.V.F. in many different ways, from refinancing their homes to borrowing from family or putting payments on credit.

Jennifer Jay Palumbo, author of The Two-Week Wait Blog and a mother who had the first of her two children through I.V.F., won a free cycle from a clinic-sponsored contest. I was someone who ran out of money to get pregnant. I dont own a house now because we went through treatment, said Palumbo. We were in a very bad place our whole savings account was empty, it was just bad.
