Get To Know Each Nyc Borough

Each of NYCs five boroughs has its own style. Manhattan is what most people think of when they think New York City the densely populated downtown area that includes neighborhoods like the Financial District, Midtown, and the East and West sides. Staten Island is more suburban, with single-family homes and wide open spaces but no subway lines. Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx include everything in between.

The best way to get to know the boroughs is to pound the pavement spend some time in each of them to see what you like and dislike. But if that isnt possible, the citys tourism agency offers a guide to the boroughs and neighborhoods that will be a good place to start.

When Is The Best Season To Move To New York City

I moved to New York in February and I stand by the fact that this is the best time to move to the city.

As a whole, fall and winter are considered off seasons. Because everyone and their mother wants to move in spring or summer, rental prices are typically lower and can be more affordable. Youll also get the added benefit of watching the city transition from winter to spring, which is such a beautiful sight to see.

However, with less demand comes less supply, and therefore there are fewer apartments to browse overall. With this, it takes more effort to find an apartment that checks off every box on your list since there are limited options.

The housing market is much more competitive during the spring and summer, and although there is a wider breadth of options, spaces tend to go much faster.

So, if you choose to move to NYC in the spring or summer, be prepared to make decisions quickly, and expect that rent prices will be higher due to increased demand.

If you have your heart set on moving to New York during the warmer months, it is wise to save up at least 4 months of rent. It may seem daunting, but money goes fast, and it is always nice to have a safety net prepared.

Weather & Natural Disasters

The good news: A large portion of New York State experiences four seasons. Crisp springs. Hot summers. Colorful falls. White winters. The bad news: Winter and summer can attack with a vengeance. Temperatures across the state average 33 °F in January and 76 °F in July. But winter temps can drop to 5 °F or lower with massive amounts of snow, and long summers can present heat waves of 100+ °F with high humidity . Youll want to make sure your HVAC system is in top shape!

The worst kind of natural disaster comes in the form of blizzards, specifically Noreasters. Just like neighboring New Jersey, New York State is at the mercy of extreme winter conditions. Record-breaking blizzards include: The North American Blizzard , Snowicane Noreaster , and Winter Storm Jonas .

Negotiate For A Better Offer

For a trustworthy tenant with the ability to pay, some landlords may be willing to knock a little off the price. So always try to request a lower number and see what happens. If your new apartment comes with a broker fee, which is usually 15% of the annual rental, try to cut that down as well, lets say 10%. When you both agree on an amount, be ready to make the payment, the models of which are as follows.

  • First Month Rent + Deposit + Application fee

  • First Month Rent + Last Month Rent + Deposit + Application fee

  • First Month Rent + Brokers fee + Deposit + Application fee

  • First Month Rent + Last Month Rent + Brokers fee + Deposit + Application fee

With regards to the forms of payment, most landlords and agencies accept ACH, wire transfer, Chase Quickpay, Clear Xchange, Paypal, credit card, cash, certified bank checks, and money order. But always check in with the landlord or the agency first.

There Are Five Boroughs

Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island. Each is its own little city, with separate neighborhoods within. Queens is the largest by area. Brooklyn is the largest by population. Manhattan is the most expensive. The Yankees play in the Bronx. You have to take a boat to get to Staten Island from Manhattan but you can drive there from Brooklyn, over the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. Each has its own culture and plenty to explore.

Can I Have A Job Please

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE MOVING TO NYC *brutally honest*

I still don’t have a job because I knew that moving to LA was where I would become a big star. Can someone give me a job? So that I can show all my friends and family back home that this was in fact worth it, and I wasn’t just upending my life to move to a place where I had not one spec of a plan or strategy?

Stop Listening To People

Your friends and family could end up being your biggest liability when making life-changing decisions. I say this not to belittle their existence, but to allow you to act as your own entity in deciding important matters that affect your life. Nobody else has to live with the decisions you make more than you do. Your opinion should be the only one that matters in this moment.

When my plan first started out, I only told a few people I trusted and knew would offer the support and encouragement I needed. I saved all the rest for later. When it had finally made the rounds to everyone I knew, I had a lot of people say discouraging things about how hard, dangerous and expensive it was. How New York is a tough city and its impossible to make it there.

Let me let you in on a little secret: its not impossible.

If youre lucky you wont encounter much of this negativity but if you do, dont listen to them. Any attempt to talk you out of it, no matter how genuine it is for your well-being, is coming from a place of fear and ignorance. Nobody can actually know if you can do it unless you try. And although New York is a tough city and its not for everyone, thats not what you need to hear right now.

You dont need the negativity, you need to know you can do it.

How To Find An Apartment In Nyc

One of the biggest things you need to know before moving is how to find an apartment in New York City. So what are the best ways to find apartments for rent in NYC and what are a few things to look out for?

Apartment searching and the entire moving process can be stressful. Luckily, it can be pretty easy to search for apartments and their prices online! Building insights can be whether or not there have been recent building complaints, building violations, elevator issues, amenities provided, and much more. Choose A Neighborhood Thats Affordable

Yes, we all want to live in Manhattan. The whole reason were even moving to New York is to live like Carrie Bradshaw and if we cant do that whats the point, right? Wrong.

New York is big and there are so many wonderful neighborhoods in every borough to choose from. More and more trendy New York neighborhoods are developing every single day, its almost impossible to keep up. So stop dreaming of Manhattan and live where you can afford. I had never even heard of Astoria before I showed up in New York. But I still found myself living in Queens, commuting to Manhattan, and loving every minute of it.

There are plenty of safe neighborhoods that are just a short train ride away from any part of Manhattan you want to visit. Start small, find a roommate and dont let yourself be disappointed that you have to cross a bridge to get home from work.

The bridges have the best views of the city anyway.

A Place For Families: Metropolitan New York

So, You Want to Visit or Move to New York City?

A couple of short paragraphs couldnât possibly do justice to the vastness and diversity of the New York metropolitan area. Metro New York is a viable place to settle down and has some obvious attractions, especially for families or people who might find the prospect of moving to New York City itself too daunting.

While property is a lot cheaper outside NYC, owning a car may become a necessity, and working family members could face a long and stressful commute every day. Moving to New York City proper might appeal mainly to the young and childless. With the possible exception of Manhattan, however, all boroughs do include family-friendly residential neighborhoods as well as hip and more expensive areas.

Who Lives In New York

Youre probably wondering who your new neighbours are going to be. As we mentioned, New York has around 8.6 million people living in it, so it feels pretty busy. To break it down a bit more: 32.1% of New Yorkers are white, 29.1% are Hispanic and Latino, 24.3% are African American, and 14% are Asian. How Much Should You Save Before Moving To New York City

My sister is currently in the process of moving to NYC and asked me this very question six months ago. The answer will vary vastly depending on your standard of living, but I suggest saving a minimum of $20,000 before moving to New York City.

Finding an apartment in NYC wont come cheap and almost all landlords require first & last months rent in addition to a security deposit up front.

Average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in my neighborhood is $3,000 per month . Which means I forked over $9,000 just to move into an apartment .

Broker fee? Oh yes, were definitely covering that sneaky bugger below. Like I said, read on to learn everything you need to know about moving to New York City.

The first step to take is updating your address with the USPS and forwarding your mail.

Luckily, this is an easy one. Youll need to:

  • Visit the official USPS Change-of-Address website at:
  • Enter your contact information.
  • Select a date to start forwarding your mail. This can be no more than 30 days prior to or 3 months after today.

  • Provide a credit card for the $1.05 fee to verify your identity.

These types of shipments and packages will typically NOT be automatically forwarded.

The New York Attitude

Living in NEW YORK CITY – What is it REALLY like?!

The hardest thing for me to adjust to was the New York attitude. Being from the South, I wasnt used to such direct and forward personalities, especially ones that didnt smile as much as I do, but Ive learned that it is a kind of realness that I can really appreciate now. I know I can generally experience people and things as they are, and it has helped me to embrace the ups and downs honestly and develop and grow myself as well. A close second hardest thing to adjust to for me continues to be the winter cold. I feel like Im still learning how to layer and wear enough clothing because my brain just doesnt understand why it is so cold sometimes. Some days I just pray Im wearing enough. Charlene

New York City Is An Active City

One thing you quickly learn after moving to New York City is how active people are. And no, Im not just talking about Mr. Washboard Abs running the six-mile loop in Central Park at 5am. Im talking about regular people .

New Yorkers walk, bike and subway everywhere they go . Youll get in a lot of steps and climb a lot of stairs when living in New York City, which is a huge advantage because youll stay in shape.

A common saying in the Big Apple is that locals dont pay for space, they pay for access. And what that means is that people move to NYC to experience NYC, not stay cooped up in their apartment. Make sure you have a quality pair of walking shoes when moving to New York City.

Have A Departure Date

I think any important goal should have a deadline. Its what keeps you motivated and holds you accountable. You HAVE to pick a departure date and stick to it. Once this date becomes flexible in your mind, its easier to validate your excuses. Then youll put it off just another month, or another six months, until the date gets further and further away.

Everything you do should revolve around this date. It doesnt have to be as soon as possible, just enough time for you to be comfortable moving. I gave myself a little less than a year, but I also wanted to save enough money to do some traveling first.

My plan was book a one way ticket to Europe, and spend a few months backpacking with no return date. I ended up booking my final ticket to New York City from a couchsurfers bedroom in Vienna.

The most important thing though was having my departure date from home. If you want to make it really real, buy your one-way plane ticket as soon as possible. Buy it right now. Having that ticket in hand could be exactly what you need to make the move a reality.

Print it out, tape it up on your mirror and look at it every single day.
