Free Housing Legal Services & Eviction Prevention Program

Our primary focus is geared towards providing legal eviction prevention services to families, individuals who are working, receiving public assistance, or that meet the low-income eligibility and are at risk of losing their homes. NAICA Homelessness Prevention Law Project, funded by the Department of human resources , currently provides free legal and referral services to over 2,000 households annually.

Families/individuals are guided through the Housing Court process and assisted in obtaining funds from charitable agencies for rental assistance. NAICA also provides Family Homelessness Eviction Prevention Supplement application processing to obtain approvals for rental assistance through the Human Resources Administration and subsequently obtain the rental arrears through HRA as well.

NAICA is also proud to be part of the Housing Court Initiative Project which was started in April 2012 and is an extension of the anti-eviction legal services provided in the Law Project. This project was started through the collaborative efforts of DHS, HRA, The Bronx Housing Court and NAICA with the goal of easing the transition of families that lost their Work Advantage rent subsidies. NEW YORK New York Attorney General Letitia James today announced that she has reached an agreement with Kucker, Marino, Winiarsky & Bittens LLP for unlawfully providing improper and damaging legal advice to New York tenants. An investigation by the Office of the Attorney General found that Kucker sent a letter to 263 unrepresented tenants in the Bronx giving them unwarranted legal advice about their rights to rent stabilization. Community Action for Safe Apartments , a tenant organizing project, was already working with the tenants to fight for safe, affordable housing. Kuckers letter gave tenants a false sense of security regarding rent stabilization, and CASAs organizing efforts were stalled as a result. As part of the agreement, Kucker will pay $50,000 to CASA for the money and resources it spent to combat Kuckers improper letter. Kucker will also adopt official trainings and procedures to ensure complete and ongoing compliance with their ethical duties.

Kucker sent the letter to six buildings in the Bronx: 1187 Anderson Avenue, 1195 Anderson Avenue, 1997 Anderson Avenue, 1220 Shakespeare Avenue, 1210 Woodycrest Avenue, and 1230 Woodycrest Avenue.
