Catch A Game At Yankee Stadium

Yankee Stadium, home field of the New York Yankees, is just a short walk from the Bronx Museum of the Arts. During baseball season, which runs from April to October, catch a professional baseball game after you hit the museum. If you want to see a game, it’s a good idea to purchase tickets in advance since the Yankees tend to sell out.

We celebrated the Bronxs 100th anniversary with three pedestrian Sundays in August, 3rd, 10th, 17th on the Grand Concourse between 165th and 167th Streets. The center lanes were closed to cars and open to a world of fun, with free music, activities and programs hosted by art/cultural, civic, health organizations and artists.

A poetry reading, storytelling, and film screening explored the Bronx through the stories of the boxers who are indelibly linked to the borough. Fighters Joshua Clottey, Iran Barkley, Luis Resto, Aaron Davis, and Louis del Valle shared their relationship to the borough through the perspective of their boxing practice. Poet Gabriele Tinti presented his epic songs about boxing and a screening of a poetry film by Michele Civetta of Quintessence Film. Organized by Gabriele Tinti and Joe de Guardia.

Boogie Down Rides hosted a bike ride exploring the murals of Hunts Point and Concourse Village.

Artist James Rojas lead a model-building workshop, complete with on-site interactive models and helped visitors engage in the planning and design process. Participants were able to translate conceptual urban planning ideas into physical forms, and learn about the value of planning and design in shaping how we live.

How To Get There

The museum is located at 1040 Grand Concourse. To arrive by subway, take the 4, B, or D trains to the 161st Street/Yankee Stadium Station and walk to Grand Concourse and 165th Street. Alternatively, hop on the Bx1 or Bx2 bus to 165th Street and Grand Concourse. You can also take the Metro North Railroad from Grand Central Station via the Hudson Line.

When To Get There

The Bronx Museum of the Arts holds regular hoursfrom 11am to 6pmWednesday through Sunday and is open later on Friday nights. The museum is closed on Monday and Tuesday. The museum is not as crowded as Manhattan art museums, but weekends are still busy. To avoid crowds, plan to arrive during the week. Families can enjoy seasonal programs designed for kids, including art-making workshops and gallery tourscheck the website for exact times.

Running through Sept. 4, Eyes on the Street is particularly focused on New York Citys children, with images of youthful street scenes from neighborhoods including Harlem, the Lower East Side, Brownsville and, of course, the Grand Concourse in the Bronx. There is unique structure and diversity in the Bronx that is so different from East Flatbush, said Mr. Shabazz, who was born in Brooklyn and lives on Long Island.

The Bronx Museum of the Arts , also called the Bronx Museum of Art or simply the Bronx Museum, is an American cultural institution located in Concourse, Bronx, New York. The museum focuses on contemporary and 20th-century works created by American artists, but it has hosted exhibitions of art and design from Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Its permanent collection consists of more than 800 paintings, sculptures, photographs, and works on paper. The museum is part of the Grand Concourse Historic District.

The Bronx Museum Of The Arts

Arquitectonica was the architect and interior designer for this new museum on Grand Concourse in the Bronx. The new building marks the beginning of an ambitious plan to expand and eventually replace the original museum structure. The first phase of the project includes new galleries and administration spaces and an outdoor sculpture court. The mid-block structure is part of a larger plan for which Arquitectonica has designed additional galleries, classrooms, an auditorium, a childrens art center and a residential tower that will anchor the corner at 165th Street where the original museum currently sits.

Arquitectonicas first phase design emerges from the sidewalk as an irregular folded screen made of fritted glass and metallic panels. The panelization in diagonal components emphasizes the depth of the crevices. The resulting vertical zones of metal and glass angle and twist like an architectural origami, demystifying the streetwall and making it permeable. One can peek into the ground floor community gallery through the slivers of semitransparent glass that face the approaching pedestrians in their diagonal position. This curtain-like geometry dramatizes the vertical dimension of the otherwise modest structure, turning it into an unexpectedly monumental surface. The lack of expression of the interior floor levels renders the facade scaleless giving it a bold, graphic reading from the open long distance approach, a strategy characteristic of other Arquitectonica work.

The Project Includes The Addition Of A Multi

The Bronx Museum of the Arts, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, has embarked on a $21m capital project to construct a new multi-storey entrance and lobby. The project, supported by city and state funds, is being overseen by the New York-based architecture firm Marvel and the New York City Economic Development Corporation, on behalf of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and is expected to be completed in 2025.

The museum last underwent a renovation between 2004 and 2006 as part of a $19m expansion designed by the Miami-based firm Arquitectonica, encompassing the addition of a 17,000 sq. ft wing comprised of galleries, offices and an outdoor sculpture courtyard. The Marvel-led renovation will connect the two buildings and feature large street-facing walls for art on the corner of Grand Concourse and 165th Street.

The Bronx Museum was founded in 1971 by community leaders and activists to boost cultural activity in the borough, through a partnership between the Bronx Council on the Arts and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which loaned around 30 paintings from its collection for the museums inaugural exhibition. It was relocated from 161st Street to to a former synagogue donated by the city of New York on 165th Street in 1982.

On a gray morning in March, Klaudio Rodriguez was pacing excitedly through the near-empty galleries of the Bronx Museum of the Arts, which sits amid the southern reaches of the boroughs famed Grand Concourse. The museums executive director since late 2020, Mr. Rodriguez was laying out his vision for a Bronx Museum operating at its maximum commercial and cultural potential.

The timing could not be more significant. This year is the museums 50th anniversary. And like so many museums around the country, it is emerging from the effects of a global pandemic that hit smaller museums especially hard.

Our programming speaks to all New Yorkers, but at our core weve always been for the Bronx, about the Bronx and the Bronx, said Mr. Rodriguez, who was born in Nicaragua and raised in Miami. We want to break the myth that museums are only for certain kinds of people, he said.

Van Cortlandt House Museum
